I was a volunteer at the beginning of this year. It is aimed at helping children who suffer from cancer. One day, we were asked to raise money for cancer research.
Since my friend Lisa was also a volunteer for the organization, I went to the event with her. There were many people at the event. After seeing our poster, some people came to us and talked with us. But few people donated money. It was a bit hot that day. Both Lisa and I got really upset.
Half an hour later, Lisa started complaining, “I don’t think we can raise much money today. ”
“Don’t worry. The event lasts for three hours. There is still a lot of time left,” I said, though I also thought poorly of our plan to raise much money that day.
While Lisa and I were talking, a little boy of about eight years old came to us. He stood in front of our poster and started reading.
After a while, he asked, “What is cancer?”
I explained what cancer is. Then I said, “Many people around the world are suffering from cancer. It can be really dangerous. More research is needed to learn about it so that people with it can suffer less. ”
“Do children suffer from cancer, too?” asked the boy.
“Yes. Many children suffer from cancer. Some of them may die. They need help. ” Lisa said and I nodded.
Hearing that, the boy became sad. The boy looked into our donation container and only saw a few onedollar and fivedollar bills. The boy said nothing after seeing that and left. Neither Lisa nor I thought the boy would return. However, about twenty minutes later, the boy did return.

The Ex-footballer
My parents don’t see football as a profession. They think I should be an engineer, a doctor or an economist. It took me a good while to eventually persuade them to buy me a new football shirt for the school matches. My old shirt had worn out and made me depressed every time I put it on. But now I had a brand new shirt! I decided to wear it today for the first time during a kick-about in our street. But as soon as we had been playing for ten minutes, the shirt sleeve (袖子) was torn when I made a turn.
I didn’t pay much attention to it at first. I thought I would sew it back together after the match. But then I noticed that the whole sleeve was torn. Only a professional could mend it now. I couldn’t tell my mum and dad that my new football shirt was ruined. I needed a tailor. As I walked home, feeling totally at a loss what to do, I was surprised to suddenly come across a shop sign—“All kinds of repairs and services!”
I went inside immediately. Looking around the shop, I saw an iron (熨斗), broken toys and a broken chair. I guessed this was the wrong place and stood there, mind blank. At that time, a man with white hair came over warmly, “Welcome! Anything needs repairing?”
I showed him the shirt and expressed my request with great care, putting my fingers through the tear in the sleeve. To my disappointment, he told me that since he opened this shop, he had repaired many things except a football shirt. But he admitted he had been waiting so long to repair a football shirt.
What he said made me hesitate. Should I count on such a green hand? I was worried he would make it worse. After all, it was new, and my parents wouldn’t buy me a new one.

Several years ago I loaned a girl some cash as she badly needed some work done to her car. We eventually worked in different cities but remained friends. About a year later she sent me a card thanking me for helping out and repaid me, which I had never expected from her. The $250 she gave me was nice to have, but honestly was not needed, nor did I expect her to repay me.
About a week after I had been given this cash, I went on a late night food run with a friend, when I encountered a homeless man who was taking shelter from the less than pleasant weather we were having at the time. The homeless man who was sitting at a table next to us was told by the waitress that he couldn't be there if he didn't order anything. I overheard him ask how much a cup of coffee was, counted the few dollars he had in his pocket, and a little reluctantly ordered coffee so he could stay inside.
As I heard all of this, and thinking of the cash I had just received but didn't need, I felt this might be someone I could help. So I engaged the man in some conversation, because I know most people who are homeless don't get the benefit of casual conversation very often. I learned he was aged 45 and had previously worked as a tree trimmer (修剪工)off the books. Unfortunately about a year ago he fell while working and badly hurt his back and was no longer able to work until he got his back medically addressed. After about 10-15 minutes of conversation I told him that if he felt comfortable accepting my offer, I would buy him whatever food off the menu he wanted. He resisted because he didn't want to trouble me, I insisted he accept my offer because everyone deserves a warm meal. He eventually accepted and ordered something simple.

We sat on the bus waiting while other passengers piled on. A blond-haired girl, about nineteen years old, took the seat in front of us. The bus driver followed behind her. He demanded her fare.
“You pay $40 or get off the bus!” the driver said.
“I paid already. Yesterday, online,” the girl insisted.
“No, no record of it!” the bus driver pointed to the paper in his hand and waved it in her face. “See. No pay! You pay, or you must get off.” He angrily pointed to the exit door.
“But I don’t have money. And I paid already. Please.”
The bus driver picked up his mobile phone and made a call to find out if there had been an error with the paperwork. After failing to get through, he was getting angrier with the girl. So he cut the call and didn’t try.
“No, you have not paid. You must pay.”
“But please, I don’t have any money on me. I must get to LA today. Please.”
Tears streamed down her face.
I had boarded a bus headed to Los Angeles. I was very excited about experiencing LA. My dream of visiting Disney Land was about to come true. But while I sat there comfortably in my seat, thinking about my next adventure, this young girl was in tears, with a man standing over her, demanding money.
I wasn’t sure what I should do. Was she telling the truth? It wouldn’t be the first time someone had extracted money by telling a sad story that turned out untrue. Did she really not have any money? Maybe the bus driver would show some sympathy and allow her to sort the payment out later?
But no, the bus driver continued to demand she pay $40 or get off the bus. The young girl insisted that she didn’t have enough money for the fare and had no one she could contact for help. It seemed the driver would throw her off the bus.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________I’d had a rather stressful day at work. It didn’t help that I’d also had another argument with my teenaged daughter that morning. By the time I arrived home, I eagerly anticipated(期盼)getting my evening walk to clear my mind. It was getting cloudier and I could tell that rain was coming. No problem. I would be home long before the liquid sunshine fell.
The intense walk worked off much of my energy. I slowed my pace, but a quick glance down shocked me. The cutest Jack Russell Terrier had appeared out of nowhere and was keeping pace beside me. I knelt to pet her, delighted to discover that her ears were so soft that she reminded me of my childhood dog. She had the same coloring as Lucky — white with a large black spot on her back and side, brown face, and white nose.
“Where did you come from, little one?” She was not wearing a collar or identification tags. I remembered seeing a Terrier when I drove into the neighborhood a few hours earlier. It had darted(突然行进)into the street in front of my car, but I had assumed she lived in the area. She must be the same dog.
I continued my walk, thinking she would find her way home on her own. The little stray continued to keep pace, walking next to me as if we were age-old companions. When I looked around, I was not surprised that, other than the dog, I was alone on this dreary(沉闷的)night. The sky had already darkened. I was worried. If I left her out there, she might be hit by a car. I wondered if I should just take her home.
The timing was ironic(讽刺的). My sixteen-year-old daughter, Megan, wanted another pet. Our family dog, Daisy, had slowed considerably in her old age, and Megan hoped we would adopt a younger, livelier dog. We had resisted her requests, since she would be leaving for college in a couple of years. Besides, Megan and I had not exactly seen eye-to-eye earlier that day. I didn’t want it to seem as if I was rewarding her after yet another argument.
The heavens opening and rain pouring, I made my decision.

It was a warm day of spring, and the sun poured over the hill that borders Doyle and Rose Martin’s countryside property outside Mifflinburg. It had rained heavily the day before, melting the better part of the long winter’s snow, and the sun was now taking care of what the rain left behind. Water was running down the hill, filling the normally shallow rivers until they nearly jumped their banks. The stream that ran through the Martins’ yard was usually ankle deep, but now it coursed (奔流) angrily at an unexpected speed, up to a man’s waist (腰). And the water was rather cold.
The Martin boys, Henry,11, and Greg,7, would not waste such a lovely afternoon. After the school bus dropped them off, they ran outside to ride bikes along the stream. They were what people call free-range kids. Doyle and Rose had three boys, and they expected their children to learn independence and responsibility, the older ones looking after the younger. Now, Henry and Greg were chasing (追逐) each other on their bikes with little Gardell, who was not yet two, playing nearby. Doyle, a truck driver, was away from home. Rose was busy in the kitchen, where she could check on the boys now and then through the window.
Suddenly Greg burst through the door, his face wet with tears. “I can’t find Gardell!” He screamed. “He was just with me!”
Rose rushed outside immediately and ran around with Henry and Greg calling Gardell’s name anxiously.
Their neighbor Bob was reading a newspaper by the window when he heard the shouts. He looked out and saw Rose and her two sons running and shouting wildly. “Something must have happened,” Bob thought to himself and went outside quickly.
“What’s wrong?” He called out to the Martins.
“We can’t find little Gardell!” Rose shouted back, half crying.
Bob’s heart sank. “Where was he just now?” he asked. “Near the stream,” Henry replied. “Oh, my God! Gardell must be in danger! Call emergency services, Rose!” With these words, he shot off towards the stream. Seized by an awful feeling, Rose quickly pulled the cellphone out of her pocket and dialed 911 while running crazily after Bob, with Henry and Greg following her. They went downstream, scanning the water carefully. Suddenly Bob saw a little body floating in the middle of the stream, stopped by a stone.

Cody and his sister April decide they want to have a pet dog. They head down to the local pet store and have a look around. It is a very small pet store that does not have many animals.
The owner of the shop is a nice old man named Mr. Smith. He walks over and greets Cody and April.
“How can I help you?” he asks.
“We would like to buy a dog,” April responds.
“Ah, well, we are not a big pet shop,”Mr. Smith tells her. “So we only have two dogs to choose from.”
They ask Mr. Smith to show them the dogs.
Mr. Smith leads them to the back of the store where the two dogs are. One of them is a very big Bulldog(斗牛狗) named Buster. It looks strong and fierce. The other is a very tiny Chihuahua(奇瓦瓦狗) named Teacup. It looks cute and lovely.
April wants Teacup the Chihuahua, while Cody wants Buster the Bulldog. To make a decision, they walk outside to discuss.
Even after they have a discussion, they cannot agree on a dog. April suggests they race home for it. The winner of the race will choose the dog.
Cody agrees. Before the race starts, Cody tells April that her shoelace is untied. When April looks down, he runs off and gets a head start.
Cody runs as hard as he can. He really wants that Bulldog as a pet. He looks back. April is so far behind he cannot even see her.
Cody finally gets home. He is tired but he is happy. He knows he is the winner.
