BEIJING --Terry Crossman has spent 20 years in the city of Beijing he now calls home.

Wearing his bright red armband and speaking fluent Chinese, from a distance 62-year-old Gao Tianrui could be taken for any regular Chinese man. But on closer inspection, things are not quite what they seem: Gao’s real name is Terry and he is from the United States. Having lived in Beijing for more than 20 years, Terry Crossman has finally realized his Chinese dream: becoming a public security volunteer. After Taiwan he worked in several places including New York, Singapore and a 12-year period in Hong Kong.

Crossman first came to the Chinese mainland in 1981, when he went to Shanghai and Suzhou in Jiangsu province. “ Wherever I went, I had at least 30 people following me, asking about Hong Kong, how much I earned, what my hobbies were and how I felt about the victory of the Chinese women’’s volleyball team.” he said. His first visit to Beijing was six years later on business.”There were few cars and lots of bicycles on the roads.”

Crossman and his family moved to Beijing in 1997, when the traffic was heavier and the city busier. “There were only two subway lines, with no air conditioning,” he said. Since then he has lived and worked in Beijing.

文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。文章主要介绍了玉兔二号在月球上的一些新发现。

【推荐1】Chinese space scientists have announced new discoveries made by Yutu-2, the first robot rover ever to explore the far side of the Moon, which permanently faces away from the Earth.

Commanding a rover on the Moon’s far side presents big challenges: the Earth is always out of sight, so radio commands and data have to be bounced back and forth using a special relay satellite orbiting in space beyond the Moon. The rover relies on solar power, so it has to shut down most of its operations for two weeks of every month during a long period of lunar night. Since rolling onto the Moon from its Change’s-4 lander in January 2019, Yutu-2 has been operating on the Moon for more than three years, making it the longest ever mission to explore the lunar surface.

One of the rover’s main findings is that the soil on the far side of the Moon is a lot stickier than on the near side — so it’s more likely to stick in Yutu-2’s wheels. That’s because on the far side rocks have had more continuous attacks from tiny bits of space dust that heat the rocks in the soil and make them stick together in pointed shapes.

Yutu-2’s journey through the lunar landscape is very slow — so far it has covered just over 1, 000 metres in three years. Along the way to either side of its path, it has spotted 88 small bowl-shaped craters (坑). Scientists think these are secondary impact craters, formed when bits of rocks were thrown out by a much bigger impact. A far larger one, called Zhinyu, was created when a big space rock hit the Moon.

As Yutu-2 continues to explore its surroundings, researchers are excited about what else it might discover. Sara Russell from London’s Natural History Museum told New Scientist magazine, “It’s like this whole new world to explore. We really have a lot to find out about the far side of the Moon; it’s really exciting.”

1. What can we learn about Yutu-2?
A.It is a robot rover to explore the near side of the Moon.
B.It is completely shut down for two weeks of every month.
C.It has been on the longest ever mission to explore the lunar surface.
D.It’s easy to control on the Moon as the Earth is always out of sight.
2. What made the soil on the far side of the Moon much stickier?
A.Materials of the wheel.B.Rocks in pointed shapes.
C.Attacks from space dust.D.Hits from big space rocks.
3. What does the underlined word “one” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Rock.B.Crater.C.HillD.Path.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Chang’e-4, a Moon Lander
B.Chang’e-4’s Findings on the Moon

文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。文章介绍了3D打印纯素食鱼片的优点,它将进入欧洲杂货店货架,前景广泛。

【推荐2】Austrian-based food-tech startup Revo Foods announced this week that its 3D-printed vegan fish filet (素食鱼片) was heading to European grocery store shelves — a first for 3D-printed food. According to the company’s September 12 press release, the arrival of the “Filet” represents a key moment in sustainable food, with 3D-printed consumables ready for industrial mass production. Revo Foods Filet is likely to be just the first of many other such 3D-printed edible (可食用的) products to soon hit the market.

“Despite dramatic losses of coral reefs and increasing levels of poisons and micro plastic polluting fish, consumer demand for seafood has skyrocketed in recent decades,” the company announcement explains, “One promising solution to provide consumers with sustainable alternatives that do not contribute to overfishing is vegan seafood. The key to the success of these products lies in recreating a real taste that appeals to consumers.”

The composition of the Filet provides a meat-like texture (口感). 12 ingredients (成分) compose Revo’s Filet, such as pea proteins, plant oils and algae extracts. With its high protein and Ornega-3 contents, eating a Revo Filet is still very much like eating regular salmon. And thanks to its plant-based ingredients, the Filet has a three week shelf life, a significant improvement over regular salmon products.

“With the milestone of industrial-scale 3D food printing, we are entering a creative food revolution, an era where food is being made exactly according to the customers’ needs,” Revo Foods CEO Robin Simsa said via this week’s announcement.

While Revo’s products are currently only available for European markets, the company says it is actively working to expand its availability across the globe, with Simsa telling PopSci the company hopes to enter US markets around 2025.
