The Xi’an City Wall is the most complete city wall that has survived China’s long history. It     1     (build) originally to protect the city     2     the Tang dynasty and has now been completely restored (修复). It is possible       3    (walk) or bike the entire 14 kilometers.

We accessed the wall through the South Gate. The wall is 12 meters high and from here you can see streams of people moving inside and outside the City Wall.

After spending some time looking at all the defensive     4     (equip) at the wall, we decided it was time for some action and what     5     (good) than to ride on a piece of history!

We     6     (hire) our bikes from the rental place at the South Gate. My bike was old and shaky     7     did the job. It took us about 3 hours to go all     8     way around the Xi’an City Wall. Supposedly you can do it in two hours, but we stopped at the different gates and     9     (watchtower) to take pictures or just to watch the local people going about their     10     (day) routines.

After Emperor Kangxi decided to build a summer resort here in 1703, Chengde became     1     political center of the Qing Dynasty, and it was also the place where the emperors received foreign guests, avoided summer heat and hunted.

    2     (construct) throughout the 18t century, the Mountain Resort was used by some emperors of the Qing Dynasty. During the reign of Emperor Yongzheng, the city Rehe was called Chengde for the first time, and it reached its     3     (high) in the reign of Emperor Qianlong.

The Mountain Resort and Eight Outer Temples     4    (list) among the World Cultural Heritage sites in 1994, and they have contributed towards the city being one of the famous cities in the world.

A little further up north of Chengde lies another jewel of the city — the natural hot springs. It’s no wonder that in Qing Dynasty Chengde was called Rehe, which literally translates     5     “hot river”. The hot springs     6     (contain) about 43 kinds of minerals are     7     (benefit) to the human body.

In the southwest of Chengde, there is a wonderland,     8     (specific) for artists and space lovers. It’s also home to one of the world’s biggest telescopes known as LAMOST, through     9     you can observe more than 4000 stars at one time.

Whether you have a creative spirit, a scientific mind     10     are simply looking for a soul-cleansing getaway, Chengde is a perfect place for you.

Diaojiaolou is a traditional residence of several ethnic minorities in China such as the Miao, Zhuang, Buyi and Tujia people. You can find a group of these houses     1     (locate) beside a river or in the     2     (mountain) areas of Yunnan, Guangxi, Hunan and Sichuan. The history of Diaojiaolou     3     (stretch) back 1400 years.

The traditional residence, typically two to three stories high, is a wooden house built on stilts (柱子). The unusual structure is considered     4     masterpiece of clever carpentry. The high     5     (hang) floors of the structure are held up by wooden stilts, which give the house an unsteady appearance from afar. But a Diaojiaolou is, in fact, firmly fixed with its stilts further reinforced by stone blocks at     6     (they) bases. The ground floor tends    7     (use) as storage space for firewood and farming equipment. Livestock (牲畜) stay on the ground floor, while people always live     8     it.

These stilted buildings sheltered people from fierce beasts in ancient times. Nowadays they continue to provide protection from venomous snakes and insects     9     are not uncommon throughout China. These buildings also help prevent humidity-related diseases in southern China.     10     (additional), the cool breeze blowing through the windows of the upper levels acts like a kind of natural air conditioner.

In December 2019，CNN Travel released a list of the world’s 21 most beautiful streets. Jinli Street from Chengdu is    1    only Chinese street    2    (select) and is placed No. 1.

According to CNN, “Qing Dynasty style wooden houses and shops together with red lanterns and traditional signage (路标) help make Chengdu’s biggest tourist attraction look    3    (pleasing) historic.” Actually, this is not the first time for Jinli Street to be    4    the list. In 2013, former Prime Minister of the Unite Kingdom David Cameron visited the place,     5    (enjoy) Chinese calligraphy and sugar painting and drinking green tea here.

Jinli Street    6    accommodated tourism, shopping and entertainment stretches for 550 meters. Since    7    (it) opening in October 2004, the street    8    (attract) waves of visitors to enjoy the Three Kingdoms Culture and local Sichuan characteristics. The year 2018 witnessed a total of over 18 million    9    (tour). In fact, Jinli Street is a must-go attraction in Chengdu whether or not it    10    (award) the “World’s Most Beautiful Street.”
