From the first day that I brought Juan, a penguin I saved on a beach in Uruguay (乌拉圭), to live at St. George school, one student in particular wanted to help take care of it. That boy’s name was Diego. The shy 13-year-old Bolivian (玻利维亚的) boy wasn’t gifted at study. And none of St. George’s after-school activities seemed to suit him either. In addition, Diego’s knowledge of English was limited, so he didn’t like talking with his classmates. But the saddest part was that he suffered homesickness. It came as no surprise that the boy spent much time with Juan and the penguin liked him.

I’d been thinking of letting Juan swim in the school’s outdoor pool. Then one night, Diego and I brought Juan to swim there. The penguin dived into the pool, flew like an arrow across the water and suddenly hit the wall on the opposite side. Diego was worried and took a sharp breath. After a moment, Juan rose to the surface spluttering (发噗噗声), gave an energetic shake and swam again. It flew from one end to the other, doing dramatic turns and finally found the freedom to express its nature.

“Look at it!” Diego shouted. Then he asked me quietly, “Can I swim with it?”

“What? And it’s ‘May I swim,’” I corrected him. “Sir. May I swim? Please! Just five minutes.”

I was shocked. I never knew Diego wanted to do anything, apart from taking care of Juan and avoiding others. “But the water is cold. Are you sure you want to go in?” “Please!” Diego begged. “All right, but be quick!” I said, thinking he’d sink like a stone. Diego’s eyes were shining. He ran to the dorm to get changed and reappeared in no time.

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West. We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Upon Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.

His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze (吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.

In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don’t be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track (足迹;踪迹) so that you don’t get lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine (松树) trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven (编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

When I was 12 years old, my grandparents passed away. I was really close to them, and losing them was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to go through. I couldn’t eat, sleep, or think; I felt like I couldn’t ever breathe. It was as if my whole world had fallen down from under me, and I fell into this huge hole of depression.

Although I was battling depression, I was determined to make my high school years the best of my life. It was difficult to be happy, but I had to try. I joined Women’s Choir (合唱团). Mr. Wright was the choral director and he was so funny that the first day, I just knew I had made the best decision of my life.

As the year progressed, I loved chorus more and more. I began to smile again and really enjoy life.

Then one day that all changed. My friends—or those that I thought were my friends—started talking about me behind my back. I was hurt, and I sat by myself. Mr. Wright came over and asked what was wrong. The look in his eyes told me I could trust him, Trying hard to hold back tears, I told him the whole story.

When I finished, he nodded and told me, “If you never learn anything from me, learn this: No one is worth stealing your joy.” What Mr. Wright said really struck a chord (心弦) in my heart. He truly cared about me and what was going on. He not only saved me but influenced every day of it.

I began to realize that my happiness didn’t depend on what others thought of me. I slowly let go of the hurt and pain, and with each passing day, I felt myself regaining the strength to smile again. The chorus became my sanctuary (避难所), a place where I could lose myself in the beauty of music and forget about the world’s troubles.

Waking up, I looked at the overcast sky, thought a bit and then decided to go to work after all. This was two years ago, when I worked at a bank. As I travelled from my house, the rain kept advancing. I reached office quite smoothly, but a few hours later, our phones started buzzing with news of flooding in various parts of the city.

Looking out of the window, my colleagues and I found that the steady drizzle had grown into a downpour. We got a bit nervous, since none of us in the city have forgotten the city’s worst floods a decade ago.

At about 12.30 p.m., after an alert from the city government, the bank let the staff leave early. Some colleagues, who had already left, called to say that they were stranded(滞留). The train services had been blocked and there were other means of transportation available either. A senior colleague, who happened to live in the same district, offered me a lift in his car. I agreed happily, and so did other colleagues, since it would have been crazy to walk into the driving rain.

The rain poured down continuously, with waist-high flood soon on the road. In the midway, the rainwater reached our car’s engine. We had no option but to park nearby. The only dry place we found was under a giant tree. We also spotted a tea stall nearby and got ourselves some much-needed tea and refreshments.

All along, I got anxious phone calls from my wife and parents, who were tracking the flood situation on TV. We looked up weather updates on our mobile phones and got more and more tense—home seemed far away. If it had not been for my portable(便携的)power bank, all our phones would have been dead.

Our train of thoughts was suddenly interrupted by a raised voice. We looked up and found a lady calling out from the balcony of a building behind us, “Please come in and make yourselves comfortable. How long will you stand out there?” She shouted out. We thanked her, but continued to wait.
