“Little boy, will you help an old man up the hill with his load?” These words were spoken by an old gray-headed man, who was drawing a hand-cart with a bag of corn in it.

“I can’t. I am in a hurry,” said Hanson, the boy addressed, who was hurrying to get to the schoolyard, so that he might play with the boys before school began.

The old man sat down on a stone at the foot of the hill, to rest himself and gather strength for the ascent (上坡). He stared after Hanson, and sighed as he thought of the days of his youth, now far back in the past. A tear was beginning to gather in his eye, when another little boy, John Wilson, came up to him and said, “Shall I help you up the hill with your load?”

The old man brushed his eyes with the sleeve of his coat, and replied, “I shall be very glad to have your help.” He then stood up, took the handle of his cart, and pulled with all his strength, while John pushed behind.

When they reached the top of the hill, John discovered a hole in the bag on the under side, from which the corn was dropping out. Putting forth all his strength, he turned the bag, so that there might be no further loss of corn.

“Thank you very much,” said the old man, as John set out upon a run for his school-house; “and may God reward you.” But John was out of hearing before the last words were spoken.

When John reached the school-house, he was about ten minutes late, for which he received a mark (违纪记录). This was a very unusual thing for him, as he was remarkable for never being late. If he had told the headmaster what had delayed him, he would have been excused; but he thought it would look a little like boasting to do so. So he took the mark without saying a word.

On February 21, 2018, the news brought Christine Cheers to her knees: “There’s been an accident.”

Her son, 32-year-old Navy flight surgeon James Mazzuchelli, had been injured in a helicopter training mission.

Machines were keeping James alive when Christine arrived at the hospital. The doctors told Christine that what she was seeing was likely his future——that her scuba diving, world-traveling, overachiever of a son was never going to wake up. He would never breathe on his own. He would never smile at her again.

It was time for Christine to honor the spirit of a man who had switched his major from commerce engineering to premed (医学预科) because he wanted to help people. It was time to make her very worst day some stranger’s best one. Christine instructed the hospital to begin the organ donation process.

Mike Cohen was just 18 when he’d been diagnosed (诊断) with a serious cancer in 2004. Doctors warned him that the treatment could cause lasting damage to his heart. At the time, surviving cancer seemed like the more pressing concern. He took his treatment seriously, doing the radiation and chemo(化疗). The risk had paid off — two years after his diagnosis, he was cancer-free. But six years later, his heart was beginning to fail. He would need a new one. He had to hope he survived waiting for a new heart.

Fortunately, on February 24, the hospital said they’d found him a heart. The next morning, Mike woke up in a hospital bed with a new heart beating in his chest.

After two weeks, he was sent home with instructions to report to recovery center, where he was limited for the first few days to slow walking. Across the room he spied a stationary (固定的) bike. And two weeks later, with his doctor’s OK, he threw a leg over and began to ride the bike.

It was one o’clock in the morning. In the Ritesville art gallery, a window opened and a man came in. His name was Harry Black, and he was a thief. It was dark in the gallery, but Harry had a light. He looked across the room at a painting.

“There it is!” he said.

Harry moved quickly across the room. He stood and looked at the painting.

There was a beautiful blue glass vase on the table. It fell onto the floor and broke into pieces. He ran across the pieces of glass to the window.

“Is this all I got?” asked my daughter, Allison. “I asked for a new cell phone and a tablet!”

“Where are the rest of the presents?” asked my son, Blake. “I wanted a set of golf clubs and a skateboard!”

Money had been tight, and as a single parent, I was doing the best I could. My children received almost everything on their wish lists when their father was alive, but things were different now.

Blake was now thirteen years old and Allison twelve. I knew we had somewhat spoiled(宠坏)them, but I had no idea it was this bad. I looked at my children and their confused faces. My feelings were hurt, but I didn’t want to show it. I was also very disappointed in their reactions to their presents. I was on my own, and I couldn’t maintain our old lifestyle.

That was the most terrible Christmas I had ever had.

The months went by quickly.I was planning our next Christmas celebration in my head a little every day. One day, I learned a local charity was seeking for help for a family that desperately needed help. It was a family that lived on a farm. There were four children in the house ranging in age from three to eight. The father had lost his job. They were a low-income family.

Although living a quite tough life myself, I still felt an urge to reach out to this family. I told Blake and Allison we would be giving gifts to a family that truly needed them. I went on to explain my disappointment in their actions and words the previous Christmas. Blake and Allison didn’t seem happy with the situation, but I was sure I had them thinking about their attitudes last Christmas.

We went shopping that weekend and bought gifts for all the children. We purchased everything they would need for a nice dinner and then picked out somethings to help them get through the winter.
