“Mom! I’m home!” John happily said and ran into the kitchen. His mom was making cookies near the window. Outside, a robin was singing. Pop-Pop, John’s grandpa, who lived with them after John’s grandma died, came shuffling through the door. Pop-Pop said, “When the robin sings, spring is here.” John’s mom added, “Tomorrow, John, let’s do the annual spring cleaning.”

The next day John and his mom cleaned the house. When looking at Pop-pop’s chair, John’s mom said, “That old chair has to go. We’ll buy Pop-Pop a new one. Let’s take it to the roadside. Tomorrow the garbage truck will pick it up.” John agreed because the chair was worn. As they attempted to move the chair, Pop-Pop came. He tried to stop John and his mom, saying he didn’t need a new one. Finally, John’s mom let go of the chair and said, “We’ll discuss it tonight when Matt gets home.” Matt, John’s dad, was still at work.

With a sigh of relief, the old man sank into his chair. “Pop-Pop, why not get rid of this old chair?” John asked when his mother left the room. “You all don’t understand, John,” Pop-Pop whispered. “I sat in this chair, with your grandma right here, when I asked her to marry me. It was so long ago. But when I sit there, I feel she’s near. And the night your father was born, I sat in this chair, too. I was so happy when they placed the tiny baby into my arms.” As Pop-Pop continued telling his connection with the chair, John understood this chair was more like a friend to him.

That night, however, when John and Pop-Pop were asleep, John’s parents carried the chair to the roadside. It was a starless night. Spring had moved away temporarily, and snow fell silently and covered Pop-Pop’s chair. The next morning, when John came downstairs, he saw Pop-Pop standing by the window and looking outside. John followed his sad look. Snow-covered, the chair stood out on the street.

I knew the fearful day would come sooner or later. However, it came too fast. I was waiting in the dental clinic, nervous about what was to come.

Seeing my nervousness, my parents told me to sit up, and to take deep breaths to keep calm, which worked. However, the peace was short-lived. Almost immediately, my name was called, signaling my turn had come. I pretended to be deaf but my mother gestured at me to stand up. I forced myself to step forward and tripped over a toy left lying around by some kid. My clumsiness (笨拙) got me the attention of everyone in the room.

I had refused my parents’ offer to accompany me. I meant to show them that I was brave enough to face the difficulty on my own. Thankfully, I forgot my anxiety as I looked around the dentist’s room. Tools of different sizes were arranged neatly in a tray (托盘) on the tiny table which was connected to a chair with buttons and a light hanging right over it. I didn’t look at my dentist in the eye as I took my place on the chair nervously. I almost jumped out of the seat when all of a sudden the chair moved and I was lying down facing the bright yellow light.

The dentist spoke in a relaxing voice behind her mask. Everything was going smoothly and I was quite proud of myself. Then something went wrong. I was picking up the cup of water placed next to the chair for patients to rinse (冲洗) their mouths when I caught sight of the dental drill. Panic related to a bad childhood experience involving the drill kicked into me, and I spat out the rinsing water, right into the surprised dentist’s face.

Every evening Sylvie left her grandmother’s house to bring her cow home. The old animal spent her days in the open country eating grass. It was Sylvie’s job to bring her home to be milked.

This evening, as usual, the child hurried the cow through the dark forest, following a narrow path that led to her grandmother’s home.

She came across a young man in front of the house. “Hello, little girl,” he said. “I’ve been looking for birds, but I’ve lost my way.” The young man explained he was a scientist, who searched for birds. “Do you put them in a cage (鸟笼)?” Sylvie asked. “No,” he answered, “I kill them and keep them for my study.”

“I saw a white heron (苍鹭) not far from here yesterday. Have you seen it, too?” he asked Sylvie. Sylvie’s heart began to beat fast. She had seen that white bird on the other side of the forest. The young man continued. “I will give $ 10 to you if you show me where it is.”

Sylvie thought happily she would get the $10 for her grandmother. Then she went to climb to the top of a tall tree. The higher Sylvie climbed, the taller the tree seemed to grow. Suddenly, a bird with broad white wings and a long neck flew past Sylvie. The white heron sat on the nest in a nearby tree. She found the heron’s secret home.

Sylvie slowly began her dangerous trip down the tall tree. She didn’t dare to look down and tried to forget that her fingers hurt and her feet were bleeding. All Sylvie wanted to think about was what the stranger would give to her when she told him where to find the heron’s nest.

One morning, Joey sat at the kitchen table and read the sports page of the paper. He heard his grandfather coming down the stairs. When his grandfather came into the kitchen, Joey could see he wasn't his usual happy self.

"Morning, Grandfather,” he smiled. His grandfather sat across the table, looking sad. He didn't pick up the paper to read. Instead, he asked, "Joey, is anything happening in town today? " "There's a ball game between Sequoyah Middle School and my school tonight. Would you like to go? " Joey told him.

Joey felt bad for his grandfather. He knew he couldn't read. His grandfather had told him often, "I didn't have the chance to go to school regularly. Looking after the animals and tending to the crops on the farm were much more important in those days than learning to read."

One day Grandfather asked Joey, “Joey, would you go with me to the grocery store? I need several things.” In the store, Joey’s grandfather walked up and down the aisles (过道), looking at all the pictures on the cans. He saw a can without a picture on it. "What's in that can?" he asked Joey, reading the label, said "It's a can of chicken soup." His grandfather walked to the meat counter but he couldn't read the prices or the labels. Finally, Grandfather gave Joey the grocery list and stepped out of the store. "I will meet you at the car," he said. Joey watched him go through the door, and he thought, I wish I could help him out but I wouldn't know where to begin and how to start.

The next day was Sunday. Joey went to the library to look through some books when he saw a sign on the library wall. It read, "Do you know somebody who can't read? We can help. Just call this number. " Joey wrote the number down, and hurried home "Somebody can teach you how to read. Just call this number. " Joey explained excitedly to his grandfather.
