Hidden gardens in London
From nature reserves to community spaces, we’ve dug up some of London’s most secret gardens, where you’ll find pockets of splendid nature and forget about all your worries.
Queen’s Wood
Across the road from the better-known Highgate Wood, there is something more magical and quiet about Queen’s Wood— witness its hilly pathways through the mountain ash and cherry trees. It might be only a few hundred metres from Highgate tube station, but native bluebells and countless species of small animals make this a wonderful retreat.
Phoenix Garden
Behind Charing Cross Road, this is a super spot for a leafy lunchtime break. Look out for frogs and sparrows, which are thriving thanks to an enthusiastic conservation initiative. The garden closed last autumn for redevelopment work but has reopened in time to take advantage of our long-awaited spell of improved weather.
Postman’s Park
A short walk from St Paul’s Cathedral lies one of London’s most touching monuments: George Frederic Watts’s Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice. Within the quiet Postman’s Park, nestled beneath a roof, are just over 50 ceramic plaques(牌匾), each honoring the memory of an ordinary person who lost their life trying to save others.
Red Cross Garden
Originally intended to give Southwark children a space to play, this Victorian garden has been restored to its original design, complete with pond, cottage, bandstand and formal borders. While relaxing in the restored bandstand, it’s hard to imagine the view back in 1887 when it was surrounded by workhouses and factories.

Cox Communications display their new smart home in which every device is “smart”. A strong internet connection is central to their product, and the company also provides a network for other service providers.
The smart home is not only controlled far away, this home—called Home Life—also features direct connections to family members and health professionals. For example, a person can perform their physiotherapy (物理疗法) far away from home with online live guidance from a physiotherapist. Or, their relatives who live in another state can pop in and out through their smartphone or tablet, so loved ones are always there if required.
This super smart home also includes a smart pill container, a smart pot to water your plants, and motion sensors for indoors and outdoors which are useful for fall detection, as well as an automatic barcode scanner (条码扫描仪) that is attached to the home’s trash can so that the packaging gets scanned when it is thrown and the consumed items are added to the user’s shopping list.
In a modern smart home, many activities that are important to independent living can be monitored, and assistance is provided on an as needed basis. If something is out of place for example, a person has a fall or doesn’t take their medicine—family can be informed immediately. However, the person living in the smart home maintains his or her autonomy (自主权) and sense of independence.

People think that they are capable of doing many things at once. However, the fact remains that they are merely switching from one job to another.
Several types of research have been done to see how multitasking affects our brains. A study conducted to see if multitasking while driving was good or bad, concluded that performance is primarily reduced when there is a research conflict.
According to the studies, the only time you can multitask is when you’re doing two things and one of them doesn’t require your attention or mental energy, for example jogging while listening to music. In many cases, multitasking has long-term, harmful effects on your health, well-being, and productivity.
Sometimes the tendency to multitask takes a toll on the relationship and the partner feels neglected. Imagine discussing something with your partner while he or she is constantly engaged on the mobile phone checking social media or email. How would that make you feel?
Researchers investigated if multitasking increases our productivity and effectiveness. The findings showed that multitasking made individuals less effective and productive, which is contrary to what most multitaskers believe.
There is a cognitive(认知的) cost every time we go from one task to another, which reduces our productivity. Multitasking implies you are constantly shifting your attention between multiple tasks-it is no different from being distracted.
We’d like to believe that doing numerous activities at once is achievable, but it comes at the cost of lowering the quality and amount of attention paid to each task. As a result, you’re less productive and less efficient than someone who concentrates on one task at a time.
What’s more, we lose time and energy when we switch tasks. A study found that when switching between different tasks, the amount of time wasted depends on various factors, and it could range from seconds to hours.
1. Why does the author mention jogging and listening to music?A.To show multitasking is possible. | B.To prove multitasking is rewarding. |

But new research has found that even a super-quick run could have great health benefits. In fact, it seems that just a 10-minute session will not only make us feel better, but could actually improve brain health, too.
Now, we all know that exercise can improve mental and physical health in many ways. But when it comes to mental well-being, there’s been relatively little research done on the specific benefits of running, compared with other physical activities, such as cycling. So this was something put to the test during a recent study. Researchers from University of Tsukuba in Japan asked participants to run on a treadmill (跑步机) for just 10 minutes. They then had to take a Stroop Color and Word Test which is used to measure reaction time in brain processing. Results showed there was a highest point in self-reported pleasure and an increase in degree of activity of the brain.
In other words, runners were found to have an increase in blood flow in the part of the brain that’s associated with dealing with functions and controlling mood (情绪). Researchers then compared these results to a similar study on cycling, which also showed improved cognition (认知), but no mood improvement. Therefore, it seems various types of exercise can make us feel differently.
The authors noted, “Given exercise is medicine, the effects of drugs differ depending on the type of drug, and different types of exercise such as running and cycling should be observed to have different effects on mental health and brain functions as well.”
So pushing ourselves to get outside for a run really will make us feel better, probably more than other fitness activities. And these findings show that we don’t necessarily need to do a lot of exercise to feel the benefit of it.
1. What did the new research find?A.Running fast benefits all of us. | B.Running is the best exercise. |
C.A short time run can be beneficial. | D.A healthy mind encourages us to run. |
A.People who are doing a research. | B.People who love running. |

A.We should go for a run in winter. | B.Running really benefits us mentally. |
C.We don’t need a lot of exercise. | D.Running on a treadmill is better than running outside. |
