Thanks to YouTube, Streaming first caught on in 2005. Today nearly three quarters of American households subscribe to at least one video streaming service. With almost 200 million subscribers worldwide and a billion hours of content viewed each week, Netflix is by far the biggest paid service. No. 2 is Amazon Prime Video. But for every Goliath, there are a hundred Davids. Many smaller streaming services show nothing but sports, classic movies, or Japanese anime.
In the early days of streaming the appeal was the lower cost, and it still is. The average streamer spends $37 a month and subscribes to three streaming platforms, while the average cable ser pays more than $200 per month. Still streaming has become more expensive in recent years. In 2019, Netflix raised the price of its basic service 12. 5 percent to $8.99 a month. A quarter of its subscribers, who protested price increases, said they would cancel their subscriptions. Few did.
A major reason: streaming networks have become home to many of the most popular TV series, including recent Emmy winners. They offer full-length feature films as well, and last year, Netflix received more Oscar nominations than any other media company. In fact, streaming has changed the Oscar competition, at least for this year. Usually only films shown in theaters are considered, but because of the coronavirus, all movies released online in 2020 are qualified for the 2021 Oscar Academy Awards. That shift is especially good news for Disney, which is putting the much anticipated movie Mulan on a new streaming service, Amazon Prime Video. But watching Mulan from your own home will cost $29.99 — on top of the service’s monthly fee of $6.99.
Too much streaming can have its disadvantages, however. There are those who binge-watch, a term Merriam-Webster added in 2017 with the definition “to watch many or all episodes of a TV series on end.” Alejandro Fragoso from New York holds the Guinness World Record: 94 straight hours.

The Grinch (2000)
This is a Christmas must-watch and one of Jim Carrey’s best performances. It was also originally a children’s book written by Dr Seuss, which I would recommend reading! It’s the story of a green monster who wants to ruin Christmas but who in the end discovers the power of love and generosity. It sounds cheesy and cliché, but I promise it’s a great film with plenty of laughs along the way.
Love Actually (2003)
While this is not a personal favorite of mine, people in the UK absolutely love this film. It has a star-studded cast, featuring actors and actresses such as Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman. It might be a little difficult to follow as there are lots of different sub-plots, so I recommend watching a dubbed version (配音版) in your native language. However, the heart-warming elements of the film make it worth watching.
Home Alone (1990)
This blockbuster is one of my favorite films of all time and I would watch it all year round if I could. It tells the story of a boy, Kevin, who is left alone in his house when his large family forget to take him on vacation with them. While the family are away, burglars try to rob the house and Kevin must protect his home by setting traps. The trips, falls and traps will have you laughing out loud as you watch a 10-year-old boy outsmart two grown men.
Miracle on 34th Street (1994)
You can’t have Christmas in an English-speaking country without watching this film. It’s not funny like Home Alone or The Grinch, but it is incredibly touching. It’s about a man who claims to be Santa, but nobody believes him except a lawyer and a little girl. The storyline may seem a little childish but you can enjoy it at any age. I cry every time I watch it and I’m 21!

Here are some of the best free movies on Amazon Prime Video, sorted out for convenience.
Honey Bay
Written by Shia LaBeouf based on his own experiences of growing up, Honey Boy is a surprisingly heartfelt and influential movie. Describing the life of a former child actor who is addicted to alcohol, this semi-autobiographical work offers profound insight into the pain and pressure of a man forced to evolve in the public eye.
The Avengers
Start your hero’s journey all over again by rewatching the first Avengers movie. Of course, Disney has the most Marvel movies of any streaming service, so if you want to do a marathon, that’s the place to start. But if you didn’t subscribe to anything there and just want to relive the Baule of Neu York, then this is a great opportunity.
Eighth Grade
Director Bo Burnham and star Elsie Fisher timelessly reflected on growing up in this work. An occasionally painful yet consistently spectacular story told a 13-year-old girl’s final week of middle school, a chance to t the record straight and reimagine her future high school sell.
The Farewell
The star Awkwafina delivers an amazing performance in writer-director Lulu Wang’s attractive story of a granddaughter saying goodbye to her grandmother. The app uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze the facial expressions of cats and dogs. Then it can tell you what breed(品种)your pet is and how it is feeling. It can show the five most common feelings-happy, angry, neutral, sad and scared.
Researchers at the University of Melbourne in Australia developed the app. The key technology used in the app is facial recognition, a common use of Al. We can unlock our mobile phones or enter train stations with facial recognition readers. But this is the first time that the tech has been used with animals.
The app's AI was first taught to recognize a picture of an animal. Then, it was taught to recognize the facial features of cats and dogs. Next came the most important step-teaching it to detect(察觉)emotions based on certain facial features. For instance, if a dog tightens up its eyes and mouth while changing the position of its ears, this means the dog is scared. To master this skill, the AT program "saw" and "read" thousands of example images.
How accurate are the results? The researchers think they are trustworthy since the app has been tested many times. Interestingly, they have found that cats are harder to read than dogs. In the future, the app might also be able to analyze a pet's body to make its readings more accurate.

They were allowed for only the highest members of society, noblemen, dukes and princes. Seeing zhaobi outside a building would let passers-by know that this is the residence of someone of extreme importance, while also serving the practical function of protecting privacy by blocking the entrance from any spying eyes.
With the passing of time and social changes, by the Tang (618-907) and later Song (960-1279) dynasties, there was less exclusivity about who could build zhaobi, but more importantly there was also a change in the meaning and purpose of the walls. Instead of representing social position, zhaobi took on a more mysterious purpose, coming to play a role in the form of fengshui, a practice which focused on achieving harmony and balance in all things.
It was believed that as well as functioning as a physical block for one’s privacy, zhaobi would act as a deterrent against gui, or wandering dangerous spirits, which would attempt to harm a home, but being unable to turn corners, zhaobi would prevent such action. As well as offering this spiritual protection, their location would allow for better flow of qi, or important energy, helping to conserve it in the building.
Moving further forward in time, zhaobi became more of a form of artistic expression and creativity, with poetry, paintings and characters representing luck and good fortune appearing on the walls, with families using zhaobi as a platform to tell their family history and achievements.

Scientists in Japan have designed a new remote-controlled insect, equipped with a battery “backpack” that is powered by solar panels. The cockroach, which is part insect and part machine, is intended to enter dangerous areas, monitor the environment or undertake search and rescue missions without needing to be recharged. The researchers from the RIKEN Cluster for Pioneering Research had to install some items into a tiny pack to allow for all the cockroach’s natural movements.
Being able to survive the tough conditions, cockroaches, the ancient insects, have been the stimulus for a number of technologies in recent years. Therefore, different teams of scientists have designed various remote controlled robo-bugs (机器虫) that can climb walls, carry objects and find humans during search-and-rescue missions.
Previously, wires were attached to the cyborg cockroach’s two sensory organs to send electrical signals that caused the “insect” to move right or left. A battery was necessary for the sending and receiving of these electrical signals, which needed to be charged up.
So the RIKEN team wanted to create a more practical one. Finally, they designed an on-board solar cell that could continuously ensure that the cockroach stayed charged while it worked. The solution was to design a special “backpack” that could neatly carry both the wireless leg-control module and rechargeable battery. This was attached to the top of the insect, and was 3D printed to fit perfectly to the surface of the cyborg cockroach. It allowed this electronic device to be firmly fitted on the “insect” for over a month.
1. Why did the scientists in Japan design the cyborg cockroaches?A.To help the disabled. | B.To monitor the competitors. |
C.To make an attempt at creation. | D.To perform some tasks instead of humans. |
A.Inspiration. | B.Method. | C.Product. | D.Outcome. |
A.By batteries. | B.By humans’ speech. |
C.By the wireless legs. | D.By the electrical signals. |
A.Why scientists tried to improve the battery. |
B.How scientists make full use of 3D technology. |
C.How scientists invented more advanced cyborg cockroaches. |
D.What scientists have done for designing a new backpack. |

A central brain region, the amygdala (大脑杏仁核)involved in stress processing, has been shown to be less activated during stress in people living in rural areas, compared to those who live in cities, hinting at the potential benefits of nature. “But so far the hen-and-egg problem could not be resolved, namely whether nature actually caused the effects in the brain or whether the particular individuals chose to live in rural or urban regions,” says Sonja Sudimac.
To achieve causal evidence, the researchers from the group examined brain activity in regions involved in stress processing in 63 healthy volunteers before and after a one-hour walk in Grunewald forest or a shopping street with traffic in Berlin. The results revealed that activity in the amygdala decreased after the walk in nature, suggesting that nature elicits beneficial effects on brain regions related to stress.
“The results support the previously assumed positive relationship between nature and brain health, but this is the first study to prove the causal link. Interestingly, the brain activity after the urban walk in these regions remained stable and showed no increases, which argues against a commonly held view that urban exposure causes additional stress,” explains Simone Kühn, head of the group.
The authors show that nature has a positive impact on brain regions involved in stress processing and that it can already be observed after a one-hour walk. This contributes to the understanding of how our physical living environment affects brain and mental health. Even a short exposure to nature decreases amygdala activity, suggesting that a walk in nature could serve as a preventive measure against developing mental health problems and reducing the potentially disadvantageous impact of the city on the brain.
In order to investigate beneficial effects of nature in different populations and age groups, the researchers are currently working on a study examining how a one-hour walk in natural versus urban environments impacts stress in mothers and their babies.
