When I was a child, we lived next door to the Schonfield Home. People who got too old to take care of themselves lived there. I was a regular visitor and volunteer there. I enjoyed spending time with the caring and responsible workers and the old people who always seemed happy to see me.

One day, a very old lady named Mrs. Kurtz moved to the Schonfield Home. She seemed sad all the time. For days, I had never seen her smile or laugh like the other old people. And no one ever came to visit her. My parents learned that she had no family or friends.

Weeks after Mrs. Kurtz moved into the Schonfield Home, I was visiting the home again. And I saw her sitting alone, looking unusually upset. I asked one of the other old people, Mrs. Smith, why Mrs. Kurtz was more depressed than usual. Mrs. Smith explained to me that Mrs. Kurtz had turned eighty-nine, and that she was upset to be celebrating another birthday all alone without any cards or gifts. She truly believed there was no one in the world who loved her.

This moved me deeply, and I started to create a plan in my mind. I ran home and raced to my room. I took out my piggy bank that I always valued. And I poured out all the money that I had received on birthdays and other special occasions. I had been saving money for a new bike. Although the money wasn’t enough to buy a bike, it was enough for what I wanted to do then.

I raced down the stairs. My mother was cleaning the house. I walked to her and explained what I was about to do, and she smiled at me proudly. She planted a kiss on my cheek and said, “I must be the luckiest mother in the world to have such a caring daughter.” My mother stopped what she was doing.

I was preparing side dishes to go with our Sunday barbecue when our daughter Rose stormed in the front door and rushed to her room. I glanced out the window and saw our neighbor Lucy walking back to her house across the road. As a mother, my feeling told me something happened between them.

“Rose, come in here. I need some help with dinner.” She came out of her room and stood beside me. She had a stubborn look on her face—the kind kids have when they know they are wrong but have persuaded themselves they are right. “I noticed that Lucy, your classmate, came over but didn’t stay long. Why?” I asked. “I don’t like her,” Rose complained. “I wish she would stop coming over here all the time. She dresses terribly, and sometimes she doesn’t smell good. Her nose is always runny, and her hair is in a mess. None of us like her.”

I knew that she referred to the popular crowd. It was a lot for a senior high student to deal with, trying to fit in with the popular crowd. It might be a shame if one of the girls in that crowd knew Lucy was playing with Rose.

I explained why I felt so sad for Lucy. “You see, baby,” I began, “I know how she felt today when you were sort of cold toward her. I know because that was me when I was in sixth grade. I was the poor kid with hand-me-down clothes, the kid who others looked down on. I also know what it was like to be hungry and see other families having a barbecue out and enjoying themselves. That feeling never goes away.” I went on to tell her that I didn’t want her to be that child or adult who looked down on others. I told her I wanted her to be kind and helpful, not judgmental and hurtful. I noticed Rose had tears in her eyes.

Living in the shadow of my elder sister who already had her life planned out since she entered middle school, I was always undecided about everything.

When I was in high school, I would still try one thing for a week and then abandon it in the next week. Although I kept searching for the beginning of the rainbow, I kept changing my dream from becoming a vet to an astronaut. I always thought there would be better options available to me. Each time, my parents would shake their heads and ask me, “Why can’t you be more like your sister? What are you going to do with your life? Aren’t you interested in anything at all?”

Each time, I would shrug (耸) my shoulders and my parents usually stopped talking, at least for the moment. I was not sure if they had given up or anticipated the same dull reply, “I couldn’t answer all of your questions right now.”

I knew my parents, just like other parents, had high expectation of me and that they really wanted me to achieve success. I also knew that my arguments were too childish.

“Your grades aren’t high enough. No good colleges are going to accept you, dear. We don’t want to pay so much money for nothing, either,” my mother said one day by the end of my second year in high school.

“Certainly, I will go to a good college,” I replied with as much confidence as I could summon. “No matter what you say.”

After the argument with my mother, I knew it was a crucial year at high school. I had to take action now. So, during the summer vacation, no longer did I sit back and let my parents mistake me for a bad boy. Instead, I started to review all the knowledge I had learned and did it with all my heart. I also turned to my sister for help whenever necessary.

【推荐3】阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

“No 7, Jobie Nymble, takes the lead,” cried the announcer. “Just one more hurdle(跨栏) and...” Cheers broke out.

“Jobie Nymble from Riverside Middle School takes first place in the girls' 100-meter hurdles!” The crowd went wild.

“County championships(锦标赛), here we come,” screamed Jobie, patting her green track spikes(钉鞋). They were her lucky shoes and she loved them. “Next Saturday, we're taking home the gold,” Jobie whispered to her spikes, excitedly retying them.

“Don't forget, guys,” said Marisol, one of her teammates. “My birthday party is next Friday at Hidden Park.”

Next weekend couldn't come soon enough. Jobie smiled with excitement all week long. At track practice, she leaped over those hurdles faster than she'd ever leaped before. And it wasn't long before everything in her path was a hurdle: flowerpots in her front yard, sidewalk cracks on the way to the bus stop and even her little sister, Teka!

The day of Marisol's party, Jobie put on her favorite outfit: her blue shorts, an old track T-shirt from her dad, and her lucky spikes. “Perfect.” She smiled at herself in the mirror.

The party was under way when Jobie arrived at Hidden Park. She stopped by the track first, planning to do some practice.

“Jobie!” Two of Jobie's teammates rushed toward her, breathless and barefoot. “Come on,” they yelled. “You have to try the slide.”

Jobie looked toward the party area. Suddenly, she saw it. The biggest slide she had ever seen was on the far side of the park. Smiling kids zoomed down the slide at unspeakable speeds. Without thinking twice, Jobie took off her spikes and dashed(猛冲) toward the slide. Its ladder stretched to the sky, but she reached the top in no time, closed her eyes and let go.

Jobie couldn't get enough. She tried again and again. When it was finally time to go home, she unwillingly made her way back to the track where she'd left her shoes.
