Pumpkin (南瓜) carving at Halloween is a family tradition. We visit a local farm every October. In the pumpkin field, I compete with my three brothers and sister to seek out the biggest pumpkin. My dad has a rule that we have to carry our pumpkins back home, and as the eldest child I have an advantage — I carried an 85-pounder (85磅重的南瓜) back last year.
This year, it was hard to tell whether my prize or the one chosen by my 14-year-old brother, Jason, was the winner. Unfortunately we forgot to weigh them before taking out their insides, but I was determined to prove my point. All of us were hard at work at the kitchen table, with my mom filming the annual event. I’m unsure now why I thought forcing my head inside the pumpkin would settle the matter, but it seemed to make perfect sense at the time.
With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost (向上), I bent over and pressed my head against the opening. At first I got jammed (塞住) just above my eyes and then, as I went on with my task, unwilling to quit, my nose briefly prevented entry. Finally I managed to put my whole head into it, like a cork (软木塞) forced into a bottle. I was able to straighten up with the huge pumpkin resting on my shoulders.
My excitement was short-lived. The pumpkin was heavy. “I’m going to set it down, now,” I said, and with Jason helping to support its weight, I bent back over the table to give it somewhere to rest. It was only when I tried to remove my head that I realized getting out was going to be less straightforward than getting in. When I pulled hard, my nose got in the way. I got into a panic as I pressed firmly against the table and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it was no use. “I can’t get it out!” I shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed (封闭的) space.

Holidays come and go in our lives. While some of those holidays feel really “special” to us, the others make us feel really “disappointed”. However, today, I would like to talk about one such holiday that I would call the “most frightening” one of my life.
This heart-stopping moment I’ve never experienced happened while I was spending Christmas in Tenerife, the largest of the seven Canary Islands and a great place to travel. My brother Jose was working there and unfortunately, he couldn’t get any time to come home, so I spent the holiday with him.
Of course, I had a lot of fun with my brother. We went to watch movies in the theatre and we ate dinners in many restaurants with specialties. As there were so many wonderful places to visit, we often returned home very late. I didn’t want to miss out on all the fun!
On the last day of my visit, we decided to go up Mt Teide — a volcano in the centre of the island and officially the second largest mountain in Europe. We hired a little car for the day — I couldn’t drive at the time, but my brother could.
We set off in brilliant sunshine, before long it got much colder and by the time we reached there it was snowing. It was freezing outside. What is more, all the restaurants, hotels and petrol stations at the top of the mountain were shut. It was then that we realized that we had almost run out of petrol. That was particularly desperate because I had to catch the plane home that evening, and if not, I would have to pay for a new ticket. So Jose decided to do something extremely dangerous — to switch off the engine of the car and freewheel down the other side of the mountain. He did it for several kilometers, along hairpin bends (急转弯) on dangerous icy roads. I was absolutely scared to death, but for some reason I didn’t tell him to stop.

Last year at Christmas time, my wife, three children and I were on our way from Paris to Nice. Somehow everything went wrong. Our hotels were “tourist traps” and our rented car broke down. On Christmas Eve, when we checked into a dirty hotel in Nice, there was no Christmas spirit in our hearts.
It was raining and cold when we went out to eat. We found a small restaurant poorly decorated for the holiday. Only five tables in the restaurant were taken. For as long as I could remember, I had wanted to travel into the Amazon jungle. During the last summer break at university, I decided to travel there. I didn’t have much money. So I found the least expensive flight to Lima, Peru. Once there, I planned on traveling to the town of La Merced. To get there, however, I had to take a taxi for the next fourteen hours.
By the time I reached La Merced, I found a hotel and asked the man at the front desk if there were any travel routes into the jungle. His simple answer was “no”. In fact, there was no way to go farther into the jungle except by hiring a boat to travel down the Amazon. However, I found that an impossible choice.
At that point, I decided to go out and get something to eat. I had walked less than a minute from the hotel when a rainstorm swept across the town. I raced ahead to the closest restaurant to get out of the rain.
I took a table by myself and ordered a meal. I was very tired. I was also feeling sorry for myself. I had flown down to Peru and then taken a fourteen—hour journey in a taxi only to discover there was no way to get into the jungle.
Then, I saw an old man. He headed over to my table. “Hi, my name’s Fritz,” he said in English. With a smile, I introduced myself and we talked for half an hour. I told him my story. He could see I was tired and unhappy, and his eyes softened as he listened.
“Come with me and stay with me and my wife Helga at our home in the jungle. We have a coffee plantation (种植园) there. You can stay as long as you’d like. At six o’clock tomorrow morning, I’ll pick you up at the hotel and take you on a trip into the jungle,” Fritz said.
“Thank you very much,” I said. “Six o’clock tomorrow morning.”

They headed quickly to the parking lot, where others were digging their cars. Fifteen minutes after the first earthquake, another quake hit, this one measuring 5.6.
With a dozen vehicles freed by noon, the guests set off down the driveway. But when they reached the main road, the path was blocked by a six⁃foot⁃high wall of snow. Matrone climbed out of his car and investigated it. There was no road in sight, “We’re trapped!” he told his wife. So they had no choice but to make their way back to the hotel.
As it was getting dark, they managed to get back. That was when the snow on the mountain began to slide. They heard the avalanche(雪崩) before they saw it. The avalanche gathered speed and size, grabbing rocks and trees and anything else in its way down the mountain, tearing the hotel from its foundation. When the avalanche came to a stop, those who were caught inside the hotel were left buried in the icy rocks and ruins.
