What They Found Inside an Old Sofa Bought for $20 Was Life-Changing
In 2021, SUNY students Reese Werkhoven, Lara Russ, and Cally Guasti were living together in a small apartment. They decided to furnish their apartment.
The three had gone to a Salvation Army store to buy a sofa, and were forced to settle for an old, rather smelly specimen that none of them really liked, but was the only one that was affordable and would fit in their living room. That day, as they were testing out their new purchase, they noticed that something was making a crinkling noise inside the cushions (垫子). Upon further investigation, they discovered a few bubble-wrapped envelopes inside the sofa.
When they opened the envelopes, they were in shock. A large amount of cash was inside. As they continued to pick apart the piece of furniture, they discovered more and more money. Guasti said, “Just when we thought we pulled out the last envelope, we’d find another $1,000 a few minutes later.”
After some time, the three roommates had unearthed a good $40,000 in cash. The fantasies of what they could do with all this money started flowing immediately.
However, they were quickly brought back to reality when they saw that there was a woman’s name on one of the envelopes. That was when the moral dilemma started — what to do? Keep the money for themselves, or try to find the owner?
The three consulted their parents for advice, and the next day, Werkhoven got a call from his mom. She had tracked down the mystery woman and found a phone number.

When I first moved to the new community, I found it difficult to adapt. Everything was unfamiliar, and I felt like an outsider in a place where everyone seemed to know each other.
One day, I returned from a morning walk with my dog. At the front door, I dug around in my pockets for the keys, only to realize that I had lost them. As all of them are tied together including my car key, I decided to return to the paths we’d taken. I spent an hour looking, brushing aside tall grasses, but the keys remained lost. I was beginning to get upset as I thought of the consequences of losing them, so I continued to retrace our steps, but in vain.
Back home again, I pulled the backup key from its hiding place, let myself in the house, and fell on the chair in exhaustion. The house key wasn’t that important as I had an extra. I had a spare car key, but there was often something wrong with it, and the key would be expensive to replace. The iron heart made by my grandson was precious beyond measure. Thinking of it being gone forever made tears come to my eyes.
That night, it turned colder and we had a snow. Suddenly I heard the noise of my car alarm from the garage. I rushed to the car, put the extra key into the door and finally opened it, and then I hurriedly tried my best to stop the alarm. I felt red-faced as I imagined my next-door neighbors being disturbed and annoyed.
I went back in the house but the alarm started again. I turned it off, went back inside, and the alarm sounded again. I repeated the process. Back in the house, I waited, but the next sound was the front doorbell. Thinking it was a neighbor ready to complain at me, I opened the door cautiously.
Paragraph 1: To my surprise, in the light snow stood three neighbors from several streets away.

Most of the children in Hope’s class had at least one parent working in a factory. Hope loved her class and often told me stories of her classmates, including a boy named Robert who was in trouble a lot. He always stood in the corner for poor behavior in class. I volunteered to act as “the classroom mom”, meaning brought snacks and planned parties and special outings for her class, even though I worked full-time as a social worker.
One day I saw Robert standing in the corner and asked the teacher if he could join our Mother’s Day party. She refused, saying he needed to learn a lesson. I wasn’t sure what he had done to make the teacher place him in the corner, but I felt sad for him as we ate cakes and played games while he continued to face the corner. After the party, I asked Hope what was wrong with Robert. “It seemed that he went to school only for basketball. He didn’t listen to our teacher in class and he talked back. If you were his mother, I bet he wouldn’t talk back,” Hope said. I knew Robert’s smother worked long hours in the paper-making factory. I knew she was a good woman, who found it hard to care for her four children alone. She tried her best, but I was sure there were days when she felt hopeless and was unable to manage it.
Hope said Robert often got angry in class when he didn’t know the answer to a question and couldn’t read as well as the other children. Hope’s words struck me and made me think about whether I could help Robert on a one-to-one basis. His teacher allowed me to come two days a week during my lunch break and help Robert with reading. We read second grade-level books, the highest level he could master.

Mrs. Johnson lost her husband to cancer after months of failed treatment. She spent every penny she had saved working as a teacher, hoping her husband’s illness wouldn’t return. She only had $5 left in her bank account and didn’t know how to survive. She was just living on leftovers and junk. What’s worse, she hadn’t paid the house rent.
Standing before the ATM, Mrs. Johnson put in her card and entered her password. In no time, she saw a five-dollar bill slide out of the machine. The old lady was so focused on the dollar bill that she barely looked at the screen.
Holding a bag full of about-outdated food items, the old lady slowly walked towards her house. Upon reaching her apartment door, she saw an envelope with her name on it in the mailbox.
Once she entered the house and kept the grocery bag on the kitchen counter, she slid the envelope out and opened it. It was an invitation for reunion from the school where she had taught all her life, but she didn’t feel like going there.
After having dinner, the old lady picked up her phone, hoping to find a job. A message caught her attention, which was a notice from her bank regarding her cash withdrawal. She read the message and was about to exit it when the remaining account balance caught her attention. A hundred thousand dollars! ! !
The next day, Mrs. Johnson visited the bank, thinking this was a big mistake. After checking, the bank told her the records showed that Norma Tyler transferred the money to her account. There was no mistake.
However, Mrs. Johnson didn’t know any Norma Tyler! After thinking about all her friends, relatives and acquaintances, Mrs. Johnson could only think of one Norma— one of the students who never performed well in class. Mrs. Johnson thought of how hard she worked with Norma. She wanted the girl to get good grades, but nothing worked. No matter how hard she tried to teach new concepts to the teenage girl, she would never understand a single word.

There have always been ups and downs in life. When I was doing my first job after graduation from college, which I neither liked nor was good at, I was at the lowest point of my life. For along time, I was depressed by my job. I often had to work overtime and barely made a living of the little money I received. After continuing this cycle of work and sleep for years. I finally decided to give up and take up the job of a joker. I don’t know why I chose to be a joker. The pay was exceptionally low, but at least the work was less. I wondered how this job would be any different from the last job. They were both meaningless.
Once I was called in a hospital to put up a show for the little kids who were admitted for weeks in this hospital. I had no mood to go but I had to pay my bills. Upon reaching the hospital I dressed as a joker putting on my ridiculously colorful costume in the restroom. Then I was on my way to the stage when I saw a kid staring at me with glittery eyes. He was a beautiful kid with no hair, a pair of dimples and a smile that you would never forget. He was in a wheelchair with an TV on his arm. The nurse who was attending him told me that he was suffering from cancer. I could feel the pain he was going through. The smile which came on his face upon seeing me made me realize that I must give this brave young fighter some comfort even if a little, during his sufferings. The nurse took the kid to his seat with other little patients.

We were headed to the nationally famous Blue Owl Restaurant, in historic Kimmswick, Missouri, to celebrate our sixtieth anniversary. It is said that the restaurant is warm and romantic with smiling waitresses dressed in long blue dresses with white aprons. The food was delicious, and the service was extremely attentive. On Valentine’s Day, the restaurant offers a sweetheart dinner that is well worth the price. So we decided to have a try.
The weather report had forecast freezing rain, but not until long after midnight. We would be safely home by then. But then, as we approached the restaurant, there was a downpour of freezing rain. We were closer to the restaurant than home so it seemed wise to advance in that direction.
By the time we arrived, the street in front of the restaurant was a sheet of ice. The parking lot was also a sheet of ice and in front of our car was a pool of water. I couldn’t pull in the parking lot and I knew, even if I parked on the street, we would never be able to get out and walk on that ice.
My husband couldn’t walk steadily and I was not strong enough to accompany him to cross the street. I was afraid we would fall, so we were planning to give up the meal in the fancy restaurant. But we really wanted to try the special chocolate-covered strawberries that were as large as baseballs. Also, we wanted to take pictures of the two of us for our memory album.
At that moment, an unknown lady walked toward us.

The challenges of being a businessman can come with many highs and lows. For a 10-year-old business owner, an unfortunate event led to a huge amount of support from the community and strangers. It even resulted in a boom in his business.
One weekend, David Hove of Toronto was selling homemade pancakes on his street. He thought of the idea as a way to make money to buy himself an expensive gaming system — an Xbox. After a number of hours, the boy went inside his home for a bathroom break. He left his pancake stand unattended for a couple of minutes, and when he returned, his pancake stand was gone. Someone had stolen his table, a cooler and even his water bottle. All that remained was the handwritten sign that reads “Homemade pancakes. $3.50 each.”
The boy’s father, David York, was surprised that somebody should steal a kid’s pancake stand. “My son was so heartbroken. How can anyone do that to a ten-year-old kid?” He reached out to neighbors asking if anybody had any clue who the thief was, but in vain. He posted on social media with the hope that perhaps the thief would return the pancake stand and maybe apologize to his son, who, he stated, developed a “distrust in humanity” because of what occurred.
A local TV station picked up the story and broadcast it. “It pains my heart to see my son going through this,” said the father in the news report. “He came up with the idea to do something that gives himself an income and it’s teaching him life lessons.” He also appealed for the return of the stolen items in the news.
