When I was six years old, I visited my grandfather’s farm in Kansas and he sent me into the woods to gather pecans (胡桃) for us to enjoy later. The pecans were about the size of a man’s thumbnail and just about the tastiest snack I’d ever had.

However, pecan picking was really tiring and my little bucket was only half full after working hard for a long time. I thought I wouldn’t let Grandpa down. Just then something caught my eye. A large brown squirrel was a few feet away. I watched as he picked up a pecan, hurried to a tree, jumped up to the trunk and disappeared in a large hole. A moment later the squirrel popped back out and climbed down to the ground to pick up another nut. Once again, he took the pecan back to his hiding place inside the hollow of the tree.

Not so secret anymore, I thought. I dashed over to the tree and looked into the hole. It was filled with pecans! Golden pecans were right there for taking. This was my chance. Handful by handful, I scooped all of those pecans into my bucket. Now it was almost full! I was so proud of myself that I couldn’t wait to show Grandpa all the pecans.

I ran back and shouted, “Look at all the pecans!” He looked into the bucket and asked, “Well, well, how did you find so many?” I told him how I’d followed the squirrel and taken the pecans from his hiding place.

Grandpa congratulated me on how smart I’d been in observing the squirrel and his habits. Then he did something that surprised me. He handed the bucket back to me and put his arm gently around my shoulders.

If you are constantly lack of confidence and worried about what other people think about your shortcomings, you will never get to where you need to go in life. This was what I learned from my own experience.

My name is Peter. Before I was born, the doctors examined my mom and found there was something wrong with my face, and actually it was worse. With my “weird” face, I knew I was not an ordinary ten-year-old kid. I had never been to a real school before, not because of the way I looked, but all the surgeries I had. Mom homeschooled me. I became stronger, though. So maybe it was time for me to go to the real school.

One day, I happened to hear Mom and Dad talking about me quietly. “We can’t keep protecting him.” Mom whispered to Dad, “We have to help him learn to deal with it. We can’t just keep avoiding situations that… ”, but she didn’t even finish her sentence because she saw me. “Go back to sleep, Peter,” Mom said softly.

“Everyone will stare at me at school,” I said, suddenly crying.

Mom came over, putting her hand on mine. “Honey, you know if you don’t want to do this, you don’t have to. But we spoke to the principal (校长) , Mr. Green and told him how funny and smart you are. When I told him about all your surgeries, and how brave you are, ‘Wow, I have to meet this kid.’ ” Mom smiled at me.

“He is really a nice man. Besides, a real school is really good for you. Peter, you will make lots of friends and learn things you have never learned with Mom.” Dad added, raising his hand as if to swear.

“But… I don’t want to go. I am afraid... ” I said in a low voice.

“How about at least meeting Mr. Green before you make up your mind?” Mom asked.

I nodded, unwilling to accept the arrangement.

【推荐2】阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

The long and tiring mid-term exam finally ended as the pleasant bell rung over the school. Walking out of the classroom, I looked up at the sky, feeling the breeze gently kissing my face. In the distance came Fred, my best friend. Waving my arms in the air, I ran toward him. “How is your exam?” I asked, smiling. “Maybe not that bad, you know I have prepared for it the whole month” he grinned. After chatting for a while, we finally decided to celebrate the end of our exams by eating outside.

Fred and I went to a fast food restaurant nearby excitedly. There near the counter sat a short man wearing a shirt unbuttoned(未系扣子的) to expose his chest, with a shaven head and tattoos(纹身)on his arms. “That man must be a bad guy!” Fred said to me in whisper. I nodded and walked to the counter cautiously.

We ordered hamburgers and steaming coffee at the counter. When our food came, I started walking towards an empty table. By bad luck, my purse strap(带子)got caught on a chair and the tray(托盘)that I was holding slipped form my hands and went flying in the air.The tray, and its contents, fell on the exact short man who was just about to take a bite of his sandwich. I stared, greatly shocked, with my eyes wide open, as the drinks soaked(浸湿)his white shirt.

“ouch!” yelled the short man and then he immediately dashed towards the washing room before I could say anything.
