When I was six years old, I visited my grandfather’s farm in Kansas and he sent me into the woods to gather pecans (胡桃) for us to enjoy later. The pecans were about the size of a man’s thumbnail and just about the tastiest snack I’d ever had.
However, pecan picking was really tiring and my little bucket was only half full after working hard for a long time. I thought I wouldn’t let Grandpa down. Just then something caught my eye. A large brown squirrel was a few feet away. I watched as he picked up a pecan, hurried to a tree, jumped up to the trunk and disappeared in a large hole. A moment later the squirrel popped back out and climbed down to the ground to pick up another nut. Once again, he took the pecan back to his hiding place inside the hollow of the tree.
Not so secret anymore, I thought. I dashed over to the tree and looked into the hole. It was filled with pecans! Golden pecans were right there for taking. This was my chance. Handful by handful, I scooped all of those pecans into my bucket. Now it was almost full! I was so proud of myself that I couldn’t wait to show Grandpa all the pecans.
I ran back and shouted, “Look at all the pecans!” He looked into the bucket and asked, “Well, well, how did you find so many?” I told him how I’d followed the squirrel and taken the pecans from his hiding place.
Grandpa congratulated me on how smart I’d been in observing the squirrel and his habits. Then he did something that surprised me. He handed the bucket back to me and put his arm gently around my shoulders.

It was last August. We were on vacation, just me, my husband, and our two kids, out for a nice, safe, socially distanced week away. We went to a popular place called Diana's Baths, where the water falls off a series of flat rocks up the mountain. The baths were full of families, so we made our way to one of the upper levels of rock to keep our distance.
Both where we sat and down below, the water fell down and into small pools, where kids in swimsuits were playing water around. I was frightened as I saw my two boys jump between the smooth rocks. I told them to stay away from all those edges. But I soon relaxed, and we were all having fun, laughing in the pools.
Suddenly, I turned and saw my son Wyatt sitting down between two rocks in fast-moving water. I shouted at him to get out. He called back something that I couldn't hear, and then he disappeared over the edge. All I remember from the moments after was screaming, over and over, like a prayer, “Somebody help my son!” I didn't even know what help he needed, because I couldn't force myself to look.
My husband was already jumping down the rocks. I finally looked. Wyatt was sitting up-he was alive. My biggest fear was gone. As I held my younger son, Jed, close, I heard another woman scream. “That child just went over the waterfall!” she shouted at her husband. “We are leaving!” They walked away, never even looking back to see whether our child was OK.
It was about 4 meters from the top of the waterfall to the pool below, which was filled with huge rocks. Wyatt had fallen on his back, straight onto the rocks. That's what Lisa told us. With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost (向上), I bent over and pressed my head against the opening. At first I got jammed (塞住) just above my eyes and then, as I went on with my task, unwilling to quit, my nose briefly prevented entry. Finally I managed to put my whole head into it, like a cork (软木塞) forced into a bottle. I was able to straighten up with the huge pumpkin resting on my shoulders.
My excitement was short-lived. The pumpkin was heavy. “I’m going to set it down, now,” I said, and with Jason helping to support its weight, I bent back over the table to give it somewhere to rest. It was only when I tried to remove my head that I realized getting out was going to be less straightforward than getting in. When I pulled hard, my nose got in the way. I got into a panic as I pressed firmly against the table and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it was no use. “I can’t get it out!” I shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed (封闭的) space.

“Surprise!” was the first thing I heard when I opened the door. My family and friends were all smiling at me. As soon as I got to school the next morning, I was showing off my phone and asking everyone for their number. It was cool how I got so many contacts on the first day. It felt like I didn’t even exist in that class anymore. I wouldn’t pay much attention to the teachers because 1 was too busy on my phone. However, I didn’t get caught using it.
I am pretty sure that the teacher did notice that I stopped paying attention to her because a week later we took a test and I failed. What was worse, my mom had to sign the test.
It was hard to show my mom the test. She was used to seeing A’s and B’s on my tests. Finally, I showed it to her, and she couldn’t believe it. She was angry but most of al, she was disappointed.
