“Surprise!” was the first thing I heard when I opened the door. My family and friends were all smiling at me. There were colorful balloons all over the house, a big poster saying “HAPPY BIRTHDAY”, and of course a cake with 12 candles. It was a wonderful feeling, I knew that I had finally turned twelve and I might possibly get the thing I wanted most.
I saw my mom and dad coming towards me with a small box which seemed to be a birthday present. When I opened the box, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I had really gotten a mobile phone! Throwing myself into their arms, I let out a cry of joy, “Thank you! I love you guys!” “You’re welcome. We knew this was going to make you happy but we didn’t only get you this because you turned twelve, but also because you are doing well in school. We expect you to keep getting good grades.” “Of course I will.” I said confidently.
As soon as I got to school the next morning, I was showing off my phone and asking everyone for their number. It was cool how I got so many contacts on the first day. It felt like I didn’t even exist in that class anymore. I wouldn’t pay much attention to the teachers because 1 was too busy on my phone. However, I didn’t get caught using it.
I am pretty sure that the teacher did notice that I stopped paying attention to her because a week later we took a test and I failed. What was worse, my mom had to sign the test.
It was hard to show my mom the test. She was used to seeing A’s and B’s on my tests. Finally, I showed it to her, and she couldn’t believe it. She was angry but most of al, she was disappointed.

My 6-year-old brother, Mike and I were home watching cartoons while Mom and Dad were out shopping. I went to get some drink and left my brother in the living room. While pouring the drink, I heard something break. I rushed into the living room only to find that my brother had broken my mom’s favorite vase(花瓶). He stood frozen, repeatedly saying it was an accident.
Seeing his worried look, I didn’t want him to get into trouble, and then did what any big sister would do. I helped him fix the broken vase. I quickly ran and got some glue (胶水). Not knowing when Mom and Dad were going to be back, I had no time to waste. I carefully gathered up all the broken pieces on the floor and started to glue them together. It took me an hour to do it but I finally made it. Just when I thought it was over, then came the real disaster.
I did fix the vase. However, I had accidentally glued my hair to it! After walking to the bathroom, I was disappointed to see what used to be shiny and neat hair was now ruined. “My beautiful hair,” I cried, Realizing that there was no way to pull my hair from the vase, I grabbed a pair of scissors (剪刀). With every single hair I cut, I cried again. My hair was ruined and the vase looked as if a wig (假发) were attached to it! Although I promised my little brother that his big sister could deal with it, I had butterflies in my stomach. I placed the vase in the same place but at a different angle, hoping my mom wouldn’t discover it.

Lin had come here today only because of Grandfather, who refused to use anything but bat waste to feed his crops.
Grandfather had always come here by himself before. But recently he was too weak to do the whole job. Grandfather could gather the waste and bring it out in the basket, but he needed Lin to pulled it home in the wooden cart (手拉车).
On arrival, Grandfather took a shovel (铁铲), a flashlight and the basket from the cart. “Would you come inside with me?” he asked Lin. Lin hadn’t been in the cave for nearly two months. Not since the Terrible Day of the Bats. “It won’t happen again, Lin,” Grandfather promised. “That time it was my mistake to wait until nearly dusk to go inside. I know that the bats fly out of the cave at sunset.” That was exactly what had happened on the Terrible Day of the Bats. As Lin had stood at the entrance, a large group of bats erupted from it. Lin was frightened. “Bats hurt no one,” Grandfather had said. “Besides, you shocked them as much as they did you.”
But nothing could make Lin forget the horror he had felt enclosed in that black cloud of bats. “I can’t go in there,” he answered. “OK,” Grandfather said. As he started to go into the cave, he called over his shoulder, “I’ll be out in no time.” Lin looked quickly at the shovel and flashlight inside the cart — his shovel and flashlight. He had used them back in the days when he always helped Grandfather. Now they only reminded him of his fear.
Lin walked down to the river, sitting and watching the fishermen in their small boats. Suddenly, Lin realized that Grandfather’s “no time” had turned into a long time. Had he somehow missed Grandfather? Had Grandfather pulled the cart home by himself? Lin hurried up the hill toward the cave. The cart was there. Grandfather was still inside. Something must have gone wrong, Lin thought. He had to go in, but he didn’t dare.

My dad believed in responsibility! Independence! New experiences! He often used his fascinating stories of his youth to urge us children to fresh achievements.
One day he came home from work early and saw me watching a local TV show-Talent Sprouts, a daily contest for kids fourteen and under. Four performances filled the half hour from 5:00 to 5:30.You might watch anything from a violin solo to a magic show. At the end the performers were spot lighted, and KMTV’s judges named a winner.
It didn’t take Daddy long to look me in the eye. “You should go on Talent Sprouts. You can play ‘Ave Maria.’ Think of it-an unforgettable experience to be on TV as an eleven-year-old!” Before I argued, he had been already off on his story of the hilarious(滑稽的) glory of his performance. Thus, though I didn’t want to, I agreed. Actually, I did know Schubert’s “Ave Maria” a very easy version that used two hands to simplify those famous arpeggios(琶音). I did have it memorized.
The next morning, I mailed my application with the required information. I had almost forgotten about it when the notice came for an audition time on a Saturday afternoon. Daddy said part of being independent and responsible was to go by myself. The bus went right by the KMTV studios.
So that Saturday I checked in at the desk and sat down to wait. I was soon called. The host of Talent Sprouts, Lew Jeffrey, and the musical director, Warren Rudd described the routine for the participants and told me I could begin to play my piano piece.
Into the eighth measure(小节) I noticed Warren Rudd nod to Lew Jeffrey. That gave me confidence, and I relaxed. Daddy was over the moon when I told him I had been assigned a day to perform less than two weeks away. Still, I had very little confidence in my talent. I knew I had an easy arrangement. I could never have played Schubert’s original.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________It was the last game of the season. Cali had been playing soccer all summer. She really enjoyed chasing the black and white ball across the grassy field. But still, Cali had not scored one single goal. Cali was-pretty-good-at passing the ball, but she couldn’t kick the ball past the goalkeeper. She wondered if she should quit soccer.
“Don’t give up,” said her coach. “You just need to keep trying and you will get better.”
“Don’t give up,” said Uncle George and Aunt Lisa.
But it was half-time, and Cali was feeling frustrated. Every time she got a chance to kick the ball, it would go in the wrong direction or a player from the other team would take control of it. Maybe she would try a different sport next summer.
The break was over. The two teams walked back onto the field, both determined to win. Cali heard her aunt whisper in her ear. “You can do it.”
Cali smiled at her aunt and headed to her position.
The score was tied with one goal each. The yellow team was pretty good, but Cali’s blue team was fast. Cali was off to the side when the ball headed her way. She ran over to it and kicked it. She watched it land right in front of a girl on the yellow team who expertly stopped it and sent it back in the other direction. Cali sighed.
The little girl watched the ball go back and forth between the players. Her heart wasn’t in the game anymore. Cali decided she’d wait until the game was over and then she was going to hang up her soccer boots for good.
She was woken from her daydream by some music. It was the sweet, happy jingle of the ice cream truck. It was driving right beside the soccer field, playing its music loudly to attract customers. The truck stopped. The music kept playing.

For my family, a vacation in Penang is a yearly event. My mother and father were raised in Penang, so they loved Penang cuisine. Each December, we’d go to the island and take a three-day tour of their favorite places for meals.
This year we began the trip to the north on a Friday morning. It took us six hours to arrive at our destination. We always stayed at a hotel in Batu Ferringhi. The beach was only a few steps away from the hotel, and our rooms had a beautiful ocean view. We spent our first night playing on the beach. Then, we went back to the hotel rooms and started playing games. My parents had a rule for our holidays that we should spend time doing something together. There was to be no television and no Internet.
We reached Bukit Bendera the following day, and then wandered around the town for the rest of the afternoon, visiting our favorite shops. We were drinking tea in a cafe when we heard someone discussing an earthquake off Sumatra, an Indonesia n island. After we returned to our hotel, we left for the beach. We went for a stroll on the beach, collecting shells along the way. When I looked up, I could see that the sunlight was more brilliant than I had imagined. Far away, I could see a big tree shaking under the sunlight. We didn’t think anything terrible was going to happen. All of a sudden, I realized something strange. It was as if the sea was moving away from the coast. I called my dad to check on this strange event. My dad took a look and his face went pale. In the distance we could see a gray line approaching the coast. It seemed to grow taller by the second.

When I was in fifth grade, you could have told me, “Colin, it’s not cool to wear the same pair of sweat pants every day,” But I was comfortable. You could have told me, “Colin, it’s not cool to go to the school dance and do the Macarena(赛前舞).” l would not have stopped. You could have even told me, “Colin, it’s not cool to be an active member of your local church’s clown road show.”
Then I went to sixth grade, and all of a sudden, there were only two options. I could somehow be cool, or I could somehow be invisible. I was doing pretty well at option two until the third period on the first day, when our teacher Mrs. Smith had us fill out a questionnaire with “get to know you” questions. I assumed that she would be reading them privately. So l felt safe to share from the perspective of the sweatpants-wearing, Macarena-dancing, Christian- clowning little snow flake that I was.
The teacher collected the sheets, mixed them up, and redistributed them to the class. We’d read the students name and our three favorite answers. My sheet ended up in the hands of a kid who was one of the coolest and meanest. His “favorite answers” of mine were the three worst ones to be read out loud. The first question was “What’s your favorite movie?” The other kids wrote Scream and Universal Soldier. He read my answer, Beauty and the Beast. A laugh erupted from the room, and my cheeks burned. The next question he read was “Where would you like to travel?” The others had said “Australia”, “Japan”. I wrote “wherever a book takes me.” The laughter this time had an explosive equality to it.
The final question was “What do you like to do on the weekends?” The other kids wrote “hangout with friends” and “go to the mall.” I wrote “perform with Clowns for Christ.” Those who weren’t laughing at me were sort of staring at me in disgust. l felt about an inch tall. l fixed my eyes on the floor and tried to figure out if I could somehow disappear.
