My dad believed in responsibility! Independence! New experiences! He often used his fascinating stories of his youth to urge us children to fresh achievements.
One day he came home from work early and saw me watching a local TV show-Talent Sprouts, a daily contest for kids fourteen and under. Four performances filled the half hour from 5:00 to 5:30.You might watch anything from a violin solo to a magic show. At the end the performers were spot lighted, and KMTV’s judges named a winner.
It didn’t take Daddy long to look me in the eye. “You should go on Talent Sprouts. You can play ‘Ave Maria.’ Think of it-an unforgettable experience to be on TV as an eleven-year-old!” Before I argued, he had been already off on his story of the hilarious(滑稽的) glory of his performance. Thus, though I didn’t want to, I agreed. Actually, I did know Schubert’s “Ave Maria” a very easy version that used two hands to simplify those famous arpeggios(琶音). I did have it memorized.
The next morning, I mailed my application with the required information. I had almost forgotten about it when the notice came for an audition time on a Saturday afternoon. Daddy said part of being independent and responsible was to go by myself. The bus went right by the KMTV studios.
So that Saturday I checked in at the desk and sat down to wait. I was soon called. The host of Talent Sprouts, Lew Jeffrey, and the musical director, Warren Rudd described the routine for the participants and told me I could begin to play my piano piece.
Into the eighth measure(小节) I noticed Warren Rudd nod to Lew Jeffrey. That gave me confidence, and I relaxed. Daddy was over the moon when I told him I had been assigned a day to perform less than two weeks away. Still, I had very little confidence in my talent. I knew I had an easy arrangement. I could never have played Schubert’s original.

A lady named Ela lived in a small, pretty town surrounded by gentle hills and big. green forests. Her favorite place in the whole world was her kitchen. It was like her special art studio, but for making delicious food. Ella loved cooking, especially for her mom, who really enjoyed old-fashioned, tasty dishes. Every night, they would sit down together and enjoy the tasty food that Ella made with lots of care and love.
Ella’s mother always said, “Cooking is not just about feeding my body; it is about feeding my soul. ” Ella kept these words close to her heart, and cooking became a spiritual bond between her mother and her. They shared joyful times, with Ella carefully measuring each cooking material and making her mom’s favorite while her mom told stories of her own childhood kitchen adventures. On cold evenings, they would laugh together as they added spices to a hearty stew, the steam making the kitchen windows foggy and turning it into a warm, comfortable place.
However, this bond was broken when her mother passed away. The kitchen, once filled with warmth, the smell of spices and the sound of laughter, turned into a place that just reminded Ella of her mom and made her very sad. She avoided the recipe books, as they brought back memories of their cooking sessions- like the time they accidentally used salt instead of sugar in cookies, but ended up laughing it off and making it once again together. With her mom gone, the joy of cooking faded, leaving Ella with a heart heavy with loss.
Months turned into years, and Ella’s interest in cooking faded into a distant memory. But life had other plans for her. One day, Ella came across a volunteer group that attended to seniors in her community. Moved by their dedication, she decided to join them.

My twin sister, Mary, and I lived together for eighteen years before we went to college. We’d known each other so much and always enjoyed shared time. We happily sang and danced together, had dinner and went to bed together, and discussed the maths problems and recited the poems together.
But one small thing couldn’t be shared smoothly and that’s the trouble with toothpaste.
Crest(佳洁士)made us give in and demanded to know what we were made of. You see, Mary likes to carefully fold and roll the toothpaste tube. I like to grab it in the middle and squeeze(挤). I might call her folding a bit too careful. She might consider my squeezing careless and rude. This difference in style may seem mild, but it caused the big trouble in the later days.
At first, it was a little joke. I’d squeeze. She’d roll. Ha, ha. I’d squeeze again. She’d roll again. Annoying. I’d squeeze even when I wasn’t brushing my teeth. She’d slip in to roll, roll, roll.
After slipping and squeezing, tip-toeing and rolling for two weeks, it was unavoidable that we finally met face to face in our tiny pink bathroom with our hands on the toothpaste. We actually yelled at each other. I may have even cried. Why was she so obsessive(过分的)? Why was I so vindictive(报复性的)? Why couldn’t she loosen up? Why couldn’t I calm down? Were we still talking about the toothpaste?
The toothpaste had become more than something to brush our teeth with; it had become a symbol for aspects of our individual personalities that we did not always care to reveal. Maybe I was being a little vindictive. Maybe she was being a bit obsessive. Maybe it really didn’t matter how we dealt with the toothpaste. But maybe it did.

Ali heard her sing when she played the piano. And he saw his grandmother diagnosed with disability was singing together with him. He was absolutely shocked. The disease took her legs away as long as he could remember. His grandmother even danced to the music, totally attracted by the piece of music. Out of curiosity, he asked his grandmother what had happened on earth. She giggled and began her story.
Oh, dear, let me share a story with you. When your grandfather went fishing on the boat, I was so afraid of losing him, and I was so afraid that he would never come back. The only way I could stay calm was to dance. I pretended to feel good. However, from my bottom of my heart, I experienced the pain of not knowing whether my love would come back safely. Every day I went home, excited but frightened to read his letters. He always ended his letters with “I love you with my life and God blesses you good health.” And then one day came a letter only with three sentences, “I have lost my arms. I give you back your freedom and you deserve a better one.” Thinking for a long time, I made a decision that I would pretend I was disabled too. I bought a stick and a wheelchair myself. I told my friends and families as well as him that I got a car accident, losing both of my legs, unable to dance anymore. Then I went to see your grandfather. I told him “you are the better one I should deserve; and we are the same, without feeling sorry for ourselves.” I leaned forward and showed him a wedding dress. “Now show me you are still a man,” I said, “I won’t ask again.” He finally smiled and managed it on me, walking towards me and giving a big hug.
Looking at grandmother for a while, Ali was deeply inspired by her. “You are an angel and I will love you forever.” Ali murmured quietly.

Two weeks ago, a 5-year-old girl named Sunshine Oelfke emptied out her piggy bank (存钱罐) onto the living room floor and immediately started counting. Her grandmother, Jackie Oelfke, thought she was playing as she carefully lined up the coins, but then she saw the girl put the coins into a plastic bag and place it in her backpack.
“That aroused my curiosity,” Jackie told CBS News. “Nobody messes with the piggy bank.” After observing Sunshine at work a few minutes longer, Jackie decided to find out why the little girl broke into her savings.
“What are you doing with that money?” Jackie asked her granddaughter.
“I’m taking it to school,” Sunshine replied. The little girl finally stated the real reason why she needed the money. “I’m going to take it for milk money. My friend Layla doesn’t get milk—her mom doesn’t have milk money but I do.”

It was a fantastic and cheery early summer day. The sun was shining brilliantly, with clouds dancing in the blue sky. The birds were singing merrily and the colourful flowers were in full bloom. There was a warm gentle breeze. Bright green leaves swung in the wind, occasionally falling to the ground, cast off from the trees they trusted.
It was a lovely morning to be outdoors, to enjoy oneself in the splendid beauty of nature. There’s nothing quite as curative as being out in nature. Little Bear hated being locked at home. He wanted to go out to relieve his boredom. While his mother was busy with the daily domestic tasks, Little Bear slipped out through the backdoor. He was so eager for independence that he ignored his parents’ words and raced off into the woods near his home on his own.
As he jogged along the winding path from his home, Little Bear felt like an adventurer. Soon, the stone path ended and he found himself in the forest. He had never been so far from home all by himself. As Little Bear explored the plants of different colors in the abundant green forest, the fear of being alone in the great outdoors began to wear off. He immediately began to regret his careless decision to escape from his parents.
By afternoon, the sun was burning hot. Little Bear was weak from hunger and thirst. He felt tired and hungry. He longed for his mother’s cooking. He longed for his nice cosy bed. He longed to go home. Little Bear scanned the surroundings. Everything looked unfamiliar to him. He was lost! There was not a soul in sight from whom he could ask for directions. Little Bear sat on a rock, alone and depressed. Looking down, all he could see were his little paw prints imprinted in the mud.

I was used to correcting my school essays with some red-ink marks until I met my high school English teacher, Rachel Green. For our writing assignments, Ms. Green would write two-page letters with praise and feedback. I had never had a teacher who was so thoughtful and careful with my writing. I didn’t know what to call it at the time, but reflecting back, she was giving us professional remarks.
I loved writing. It was a hobby. But Ms. Green was determined to make me an author. Her comments were more than just about fixing grammatical errors. She wrote questions to make my essays more detailed; she underlined passages that she agreed with. Her letters always started with how proud she was that I was brave enough to write the truth, how she saw potential in me. I savored (品味) her words—read them over and over.
I needed this care, this recognition. I was the last Watson child to attend Jefferson High School. My sister Cheryl was known for being one of the star writers of the school newspaper. Trisa, another sister, had participated in two study-abroad programs and even helped her peers in Spanish. Dyan, another sister, was good at playing the piano. My sisters were involved in all types of after-school activities cheer-leading, volleyball, track and student government. While I was the little one following them like a shadow. No one noticed my existence except Ms. Green.
Adjusting to high school was challenging, and I felt insecure. On the first day of my high school, a teacher greeted me with a hug, saying, “You have some big shoes to fill.” Then she showed me the trophy (奖杯) case in the hallway. I immediately recognized several: Cheryl, Trisa, and Dyan. I was inspired, yes, but mostly worried. My Spanish was so-so. I got good grades but was not a 4.0 student. I loved music, but I wasn’t good at playing any musical instrument. Worse still, I never dared to share my story in front of my class. I tried to walk in my sisters’ shoes, but they didn’t fit. I tried to follow their steps, but it’s too hard, really.

It was during the summer of 2010 when I finally got over my fear of waterslides (水滑道).
As we stood in line to get our bags checked, I looked at the rides and started to get nervous. I walked up to the long white table and handed my bag to the lady on the other side. She looked at me suspiciously in the eye, opened up my bag, peeked inside, and then handed it back aggressively. As I walked through the big metal gates, I looked up at all of the rides. My heart skipped a beat when I saw all of the twists and turns of each ride.
I got with my group and we jumped into the Lazy River. As I got myself caught up with my friends, Counselor Thomas called our group out. We all discussed about which ride we would like to go on first. I nervously sat down and listened, not quite ready to go onto any of the rides just yet. They finally decided to go on the Storm Rider.
Nia, wearing her green T-shirt, skipped up to me. “Hey! Want to go on the ride with me?” she asked excitedly. “Umm”, I hesitated and thought, “What if they make fun of me for being scared of rides?” “Sure, why not!” I blurted out. “OK!” Nia exclaimed, “Charlie and Kevin! Grab a float please!” The two boys fished out a big rubber float (橡皮浮圈) and started pulling it up the stairs forcibly. Nia and I followed along. As we waited in line, I listened to the people on all of the other rides scream.
We climbed all the way to the top of the steps. I looked down at the yellow and blue frightening ride and panicked a little when I saw the steepness of the drop. Then we listened to the lifeguard for the safety rules. The more he talked, the more nervous I got. I gripped onto the rubber handles on the seat. All of a sudden I heard the lifeguard ask, “Are you all ready?” Charlie, Nia, and Kevin all exclaimed, “Yeah!” I held on tight and braced myself for what’s about to happen.

As a child, I clearly remembered watching the PBS cartoon character Arthur get glasses. The poor guy felt ashamed and was laughed at by other kids due to his glasses. So I was thankful that I had good eyesight.
However, when I entered the eighth grade, I could no longer see very clearly the writing on the blackboard. Luckily, I was usually seated in the front of the classroom, and my study was not affected. So I didn't turn to glasses.
During my first year in high school, my eyesight became poorer. My eyes were examined, and the doctor determined that my eyesight was quite bad. I would either have to wear glasses full time, or try contact lenses (隐形眼镜). Since I had watched the cartoon character Arthur before, I was afraid to be judged by others due to my glasses — it made me believe the glasses would affect a person’s beauty. And being a teenage girl, I cared much about my self-image. Besides, at that time, there were few students around me wearing glasses. So I chose to wear contact lenses. I felt they would not affect my appearance. On the contrary, they would make me more attractive. And after wearing contact lenses, my entire world was transformed. Trees actually had leaves. People around me showed clear expressions. I was overjoyed at my new-found sight and appearance, and I had more self-confidence.
But when my junior year came along, I began to have trouble with my eyes. Once in a while, the contact lenses would irritate (刺激) my eyes, almost to the point where the pain was unbearable. It would take me thirty minutes just to get the lenses in comfortably every day, which made me so upset. With time going by, the pain only got worse.
In spite of endless visits to the hospital, my doctor found nothing wrong with my eyes. He tried countless mediations to ease my pain, However, none of them worked, and there was nothing left to try.
