When I was a kid about twelve years old, I had a lot of freckles(雀斑). I had reached the age when I had begun to really look at myself in the mirror, and I was overwhelmed. Apparently my mother was too, because sometimes she’d look at me and shake her head.

I had a cousin whose name was Janette Elizabeth. She looked exactly like her name sounds because she had a flawless peaches-and-cream complexion (肤色). I couldn’t help comparing myself with her and thinking that my life would be a lot different if I had beautiful skin too.

And then, in the back pages of Janette Elizabeth’s magazine, I found the answer: an advertisement for freckle-remover cream. I knew that I could afford it if I saved my money, and I did. The ad assured me that the product would work well. For three weeks I went to the mailbox every day precisely at the time the mail was delivered. I knew that if someone else in my family got the mail, I would never hear the end of it. There was no way that they would let me open the box in private.

Three weeks later, my package finally came. I went to my room with it, sat on the edge of my bed, and opened it. I was sure that I was looking at a miracle. When I got up the next morning, I applied the cream all over my body. Then I took my hoe (锄头) and went with my brother and cousins to hoe the field, where I got rid of some tiger lilies (虎百合), seemingly ugly with black and small spots.

The sun was so strong that even my face started to burn. By the end of the day, when I came back to the house, my family, knowing nothing about the freckle-remover cream, began to say things like “I’ve never seen you with that many freckles before.” When I saw myself in the mirror, I found my freckles even darker and clearer. I dissolved into tears and hid in the bathroom.

A few years ago, I was working in a grocery store(食品杂货店). As there were too many customers during the Christmas holidays, I was not used to the management nor the customers there. As I was checking groceries that morning, an elderly man in a wheelchair came through my check stand with a basket filled with candies, soft drinks and other small things. As I finished ringing up his goods, I told the man how much he should pay. He presented an out-of-state cheque(支票) from his son. He explained to me that his son had sent him the cheque for his Christmas present and he wanted to use it to buy gifts for the friends and wonderful workers at the nursing home where he lived, which was a few blocks behind the store. When he talked about them, he appeared very happy.

Since this was not my “home” store, I needed to check the cheque before accepting it. When the manager came over, she looked annoyed and told the gentleman that it was out of the question, in a very impolite manner. She told the gentleman he would just have to go to a bank to cash the cheque. The elderly gentleman started to softly cry as he looked up at me. He was sorry for being unable to pay his bill. He had no choice but to leave with nothing to take.

Seeing his lonely figure(人影), I felt my heart stopped. I could only think this man could be my grandfather. I was sure he must have been a wonderful functioning member of our society before he went to the nursing home because of illness and old age. I was influenced by his kindness and gentleness on his face, and couldn’t believe the impolite way the young manager had refused the gentleman’s request. I felt sad while trying to check out for the next few customers.

It was one of those super cold Saturdays in New York. I woke up with my son Bisher, who just turned 13 and was in 6th Grade. He was well organized and had an alarm clock so he woke up on time. When Bisher was taking a bath, I had already made breakfast for my family and we were ready to leave. My pet dogs Milo and Jego were having their mealtime too.

I was going to my parents' farm with my family in my truck, like I always do during winter. It's an hour's drive from New York City to the farm. I was driving a Mitsubishi Triton and the dogs were at the back of the truck.

An hour later, when we all reached the farm, Bisher got so excited that he started to talk to the dogs and imagine what fun they would have during this holiday. When I opened the fence, it was 2:15 pm. In no time I saw my parents' dogs—Jamie and Rocky—rushing into sight, wagging their tails and barking and howling to show their excitement. With all this noisy welcome of dogs, my mom, who was in the kitchen, hurried to open the main door and hugged us tight. After all the meeting and greeting, I went into the room and kept all our luggage.

My father is a farmer, my mom is a housewife, and they live on the farm. That night my family were enjoying my mom's special recipe of fish and chips with vegetable soup and sharing old stories of our childhood memories. At that very moment we heard some strange noise of chickens clucking (咯咯叫) and Jamie's continuous barking. Feeling brave, the three of us—my father, Bisher and I—started to follow the barking.

Ferguson Jones was planning to be a famous inventor. He was not famous yet, being only in the fourth grade, but he was on his way. Ferguson had just completed his first invention.

“Mom,” he said, “my invention is ready to be viewed. You can see it, too, Willard,” he said to his brother, who was busy trying to fix the kitchen clock. “Step right into my room.”

On a table in Ferguson’s bedroom was a device made of wooden sticks, cardboard tubes, and rubber bands. A red balloon was tied to the top.

Ferguson held up a hand. “Just watch,” he said. He unfastened one of the rubber bands, which caused a ball to roll downward. The ball fell onto a device and caused a pin to stick into the balloon that popped with a loud noise.

Ferguson’s mother laughed. “Very clever!” she said.

“But not very useful,” said Willard. With these words, he went back to the kitchen to continue his useful job of repairing the clock. He had the larger clock parts spread out on the table and the smaller parts lined up neatly on the sill of the open window.

Ferguson was sorry that his brother didn’t appreciate his invention. But he wasn’t discouraged. He got right to work on Invention Number Two. When it was finished, he called in his mother and brother again.

Invention Number Two was a network of strings that ran all the way across Ferguson’s room.

“Watch this,” Ferguson said, sitting down on his bed. He started his device, which caused all the other strings to move in a complicated way. Eventually, one of Ferguson’s tennis shoes rose into the air and traveled toward his bed.

His mother chuckled. “That’s innovative!” she said.

“Maybe so,” said Willard. “But why not invent something useful?” He turned around and went back to the kitchen.

Ferguson tried to think of a useful invention. But he soon realized that what he liked best about inventing things was the invention itself not what it was able to do.
