Smile for the Camera

He had beautiful features, half-Arab and half-African: large almond-shaped brown eyes and a delicate nose. His hair was black, cut short. For a refugee (难民), he was in good shape physically, though dirty and barefoot.

He stood in front of my camera and stared. “You will find my parents,” he ordered. “I can’t promise,” I replied and focused the camera on his face, “Smile.” “Then I can’t smile.” I snapped a photo of the boy and wrote down his vital information: Maiga Fotana, age 10; his parents’ names; his village. “Bye,” I said when I finished and he walked away silently.

Until sundown,I shot pictures of hundreds of children. We would post their pictures wherever we could in the war-affected country, hoping someone would recognize a little face and come to the camp to claim the child.

The next morning, Maiga was first in line. “Did you find my parents?” he asked. “No,” I said, “I just took your picture yesterday. I haven’t even developed it yet.”

“My parents will be looking for me, so I need to take another picture,” he said. I loaded my camera. “One photo is enough,” I said, “We’ll make copies and post them all over. Besides, I don’t have enough film (胶卷). I can’t take two photos of everyone!” He drew close to me. I could see flecks of green in his eyes. “We won’t tell others,” he whispered. He winked. I shook my head. “Bye,” he said.

The next day, he came and tilted his head, “I want to help you,” he said, “I can write names.” He took his place next to me. Maiga had beautiful hand-writing, square and even. He spoke to each child with authority as he wrote down their information. As each child left, Maiga said, “Bye.”

One day, hundreds of people came to our camp. They held photos in their hands with hope in their wide dark eyes. They strained their necks to see through the crowds. They called out names.

All the aid workers gathered to watch as adults and children ran to each other, crying and embracing. I saw family after family brought together, and I felt delighted and moved as well.

On one glorious morning after having breakfast at home, my cousin, Ana and her family suddenly appeared at my home's front door. I quickly invited the whole family to come in. Ana is my closest cousin. Naturally I was very happy and delighted to have Ana with me. That afternoon, my parents and Ana's family decided to buy some branded items on a big year-end sale at the mall. Ana and I stayed at home. Unfortunately, my parents did not prepare any dinner for us.

We came to the kitchen and saw a packet of flour. So Ana suggested baking some pancakes. Ana told me that she seldom cook at home and baking a pancake is impossible for her. I told her I was neither a good cook nor a good baker. Feeling quite hungry, we still decided to bake pancakes by ourselves.

First, Ana and I put the flour into a special bowl and mixed it with hot water. Next, we kneaded(揉)the dough(面团)until it became hard and we could not press it anymore. Then, we put it into a microwave oven(微波炉). Within minutes, we saw that the dough did not expand and got burnt. Oh gosh! We had to take it out. We tried sharing a piece. Imagine our new “pancake”. It was tasteless and very hard. We thought we were eating parts of steel.

I was still hoping Goldie might come back. But it was the day after the race and there was no sign of her. I was sitting in Grandad’s garden, staring into the sky.

“Come on, Goldie, come on, Goldie.”

Sometimes racing pigeons turned up days after a race. They got lost, or hit bad weather. But that never happened to Goldie. She always came home, right on time.

I had known Goldie ever since she was an egg. I had known her since she was a pink baby pigeon. I helped Grandad look after her. I had held her in my hands after a race and felt her little heart beating. She was beautiful. She had got shiny green and blue feathers on her neck.

“Come on, Goldie.” I couldn’t stop saying that. I had been whispering it ever since I woke up. But it wasn’t working. It wasn’t bringing Goldie back.

What was I going to do? I wanted my Grandad to get better. I wanted him to come out of hospital. But when he came out, he’d come straight to his pigeon cage to see Goldie. “Where’s my champion racer?” he’d ask me.

Suddenly I got a sick feeling in my stomach. I remembered what Grandad had said about the falcons (老鹰) in the old quarry (采石场). I hated those falcons. They probably killed Goldie. I could feel myself getting really angry. My fists were bunched up. Now I knew exactly what to do.

It only took five minutes to run to the old quarry. My chest was burning when I got there and I was gasping for breath but I didn’t stop. I slid down through the trees to the quarry floor.

I wanted to get those falcons. I wanted revenge (复仇), for Goldie. I wanted to be able to tell Grandad, “Take it easy, Grandad. You don’t have to worry any more. I’ve taken care of those falcons for you!”

But I couldn’t see any falcons. Where was their nest? I looked around the quarry walls. That must be it. It was on the deepest side of the quarry.

“I’ll get you, falcons!” I shouted to the nest. My hands were bleeding. But I didn’t feel the pain. Finally I was there.

The snowstorm was supposed to hit the evening of Monday, Jan. 31. I was working from home but I had to leave that afternoon and go to my office to sign an emergency financial aid check for a student. The route to the office took about 30 minutes along the highway. When I got there, my colleague came to my office to co-sign the check, and left. As I was packing up, I noticed he had left his laptop bag in my office.

“I can bring it to you,” I assured him. It was just past 4:30 p. m. The snow wasn’t supposed to start until later. On the way to his place, I picked up a new cellphone charger, and filled up my SUV with gas.

It took me about 15 minutes to get to my colleague’s house, where I dropped off the laptop case and got back on the road. Then the snow started, and it was coming down fast. Within minutes, the windows were fogging up and getting covered with snow, so I rolled down my driver’s side window, thinking I could better follow the edge of the road and keep to a straight line. But really, I didn’t have a clue where I was or even which side of the road I was on.

I called 911, but the dispatcher (调度员) told me that nobody was coming to get me until morning at the earliest. The storm would continue for longer than predicted and I worried I’d freeze to death.

Breathe, I told myself. Panicking won’t help.

I stopped the car, pinning my location on Google Maps, figuring out that I was on a road called Bouvier Lane, in between two farms. I posted this new information to my Facebook community group, pleading for anyone who knew who lived on the farms to help me get rescued.

At 8 p. m., my cellphone rang. It was the son of the farmer, André Bouvier, who owned the land beside the road I was stuck in. He told me that his dad had just helped two other cars get to his house, a father and his two kids, and a couple with their daughter. He comforted me that his dad was coming to get me.
