Everyone needs to be safe, loved and to have a sense of belonging. These are inborn and natural basic needs. In an effort to have these needs satisfied, many of us tend to please others. And it works for a while. We find that we experience less conflict (冲突) with others, but the conflict within ourselves grows. Saying “ no ” produces feeling of guilt (内疚) and saying “ yes ” brings anger.

My father was in the military, so we often moved. Being shy, I didn’t make friends. What’s more, I grew up in a household where grades, image and how others saw our family were very important. In our household a “ C ” was unacceptable, a “ B ” should have been an “ A ” and an “ A ” meant the lesson was too easy. I was too thin, my sister was too fat and my brother’s lips and ears were too big for his tiny head.

To stop pleasing others is easier said than done. It’s a long process, one in which I am consistently working to perfect. The turning point for me came shortly after I got married. The very first thing that we did to end the cycle of pleasing others was developing our own identity as independent human beings and then as a couple. And then we developed a strong set of core (核心) values and a vision for our future. The third and one of the most valuable things we did during this process was developing our own personal influence on others and we valued deeply the opinions of the wiser and more successful people around us.

Besides, we should understand that sometimes helping people at once actually hurts them. The struggle is necessary to success. The struggle strengthens character, making people determined. So sometimes allowing people to struggle is the best thing you can do for them.

3. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.What steps the author took to go on pleasing others.

D.When the author turned to others for their valuable opinions.
4. What does the author suggest doing?

【推荐1】Will people remember less with Internet users becoming more and more dependent on the Internet to store information? If you know your computer will save information, why do you store it in your own personal memory, your brain?

Professor Betsy Sparrow, together with her research team, has carried out some experiments in a recent study, wanting to know how the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they offered people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.

In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the computer. The information was in a specific computer folder( 文 件 夹 ). Surprisingly, people later remembered the folder locations better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory(交互记忆)”.

According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet.

Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.

3. What do people usually do in transactive memory?
A.They remember how to find the information.
B.They organize information like a computer.
C.They change the quantity of information.
D.They bear the information in mind.
4. What is Sparrow’s attitude towards the influence the Internet has on people’s memory ?

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了,由于生物医药技术的快速发展,未来人类预期的寿命会更长久,这是一个好消息,但随之也带来了一些难题。

【推荐3】One of the important, but seldom-discussed, problems in healthcare reform is how to take care of our aging population as people continue to live longer. According to a new study from the Mac Arthur Research Network on an Aging Society, by 2050 Americans may live 3.1 to 7.9 years longer than the government expects. That would mean women would live 89 to 93 years and men 83 to nearly 86 years. The researchers base their conclusion on “rapid advances in biomedical(生物医药) technology that delay the start and progression of major deadly diseases or that slow the aging process.”

While this is good news, especially for the young, the life expectancy, which is in excess of(超过) the government’s estimates, would raise costs sharply for Medicare and Social Security. If the study’s predictions are accurate, the total cost for those two programs through 2050 could be between $3.2 trillion and $8.3 trillion higher than the US Census Bureau and the Social Security Administration currently expect.

And that’s only the beginning. With anticipated scientific breakthroughs in coming decades, people could eventually live to 150 years of age, says Dr. Steven Joyal, an official of the Life Extension Foundation (LEF), a nonprofit organization that promotes research on how we can live longer and healthier. The MacArthur paper, in fact, says that some experts believe the average life expectancy could hit 100 by 2060.

What’s more, Joyal says, overcoming disease and slowing down the aging process will lead to a sharp decline in disability, allowing people of advanced age to function as well as they did when they were much younger. “In other words, a 90-year-old person could have the same mental and physical capacity(能力) as somebody 40 or 50 years old.”

1. What does the new study show?
A.Great progress has been made in the US in public security.
B.Americans will live much longer by 2050 than they do now.
C.Few people pay attention to the health care reform in the US.
D.Fewer Americans suffer from deadly disease now than before.
2. What probably helps Americans live much longer?
A.Social security.B.Healthcare reform.
C.Biomedical technology.D.New research in health care.
3. What problem may a longer life expectancy in the US lead to?
A.It will increase public costs for the government.
B.The old will have some mental problems.
C.It adds to the chance of being disabled.
D.The aging process will speed up.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Life for Senior Citizens in the US
B.Disadvantages of Longer Life Expectancy
C.The Longer Life Expectancy in the Future
D.What Can Be Done to Support So Many Aged People
