Greetings shareholders(股东) ,
GLA Electronics of America Inc. is placed to show a summary of its yearly income report for the year 2014. Thanks to our recently-enlarged international markets, the total earnings reached US$160 million in 2014, with a net profit of US$ 40 million
CarPhone Quarterly Sales
GLA Electronics sold l.6 million CarPhones the whole year, with half of these being sold during the fourth quarter, which ended September 24, 2014. In addition, the first quarter saw sales of 400,000 units, with the remaining units sales divided equally between the second and third quarters.
CarPhone Sales Have Improved Greatly since 2011.
We are excited to announce that we sold more CarPhones in 2014 than in the year of 2011 to 2013 combined. In 2011, only 150,000 units were sold. Thanks to strong advertising afterwards, sales increased by 50% in 2012, and then double in 2013.
Distribution of CarPhone Sales by Region
Sales onside of North America made up nearly 50% of the total sales volume in 2014. Half of the units sold internationally were in Asian markers, with 300,000 units sold in Europe. The remaining units were sold in South America.
A Vision of the Future
GLA Electronics will continue to invest(投资) in the growth of our company. In 2015, we expect sales to increase by up to 300% , partly due to the upcoming opening of three large factories in China, Taiwan, and Malaysia. In addition, the demand for CarPhones continues to increase worldwide and shows no sign of slowing down. We are grateful for the success of 2014. Hopefully, the coming year will see continued growth.
Sincerely,

This summer, teams in the AAA league will use modern technology to call balls and strikes on batters. Human umpires will still stand behind the plate, but a voice in their earpieces will tell them to shout out “ball” or “strike”—as determined by a system known as Automated Ball-Strike (ABS).
ABS will even calculate different-sized strike zones for tall or short players, just as human umpires must do. Human umpires will be able to override(推翻)the ABS if they feel it made a mistake. And they will continue to do other things umps do, like call an out made on the base paths, separate angry opposing players to prevent fights, and of course dust off home plate.
For well over a century, umpires have stood as one of the most human elements of baseball. How they make calls can affect the outcome of a game. They unavoidably have human failings. But how they see things, whether right or wrong in the view of any individual fan, is how it will go down. They are the boss. In the end, it’s a human being who is running a game being played by other humans.
More and more, technology is invading(入侵)sports. Data is being used more thoroughly to assess the value of individual players. Statistics advise managers on what decisions to make, such as which players to use and when. Yet sometimes a special joy can well up in a fan when a player defies the odds and succeeds when the data says it shouldn’t happen.
In cases where the use of technology can make a sports competition fairer to teams, players, and their fans, by reducing the number of “bad calls”, it can be a benefit to sports. Robot referees(裁判)could also help solve shortages of volunteer referees at the amateur level, in sports such as soccer. A game might be run by a single official aided by technology that does parts of the job such as calling balls in or out of bounds.
1. When will human umpires use their right to refuse the ABS?A.When they think the ABS makes a wrong decision. |
B.When they separate angry opposing players. |
C.When they call balls in or out of bounds. |
D.When they dust off home plate. |
A.Agreeable. | B.Respectful. | C.Worried. | D.Dissatisfied. |
A.Breaks the law. | B.Gets over the difficulties. |
C.Teams up with his players. | D.Gets injured. |
A.The importance of fair play. |
B.The shortages of volunteer referees. |
C.The advantages of using robots as referees. |
D.The application of modern technology in sports. |

They surface only when they need to take a breath. Due to the need for holding one’s breath for extended periods of time, underwater hockey requires strong physical and psychological support. It is an extreme sport. In China, a growing number of people have been joining this sport.
In the summer of 2013, Meng Tao founded an underwater hockey club in Handan City, Hebei Province, and its membership now exceeds 600. He says he first encountered underwater hockey when he took part in diving. After hearing the news about the first China Cup Underwater Hockey Championship match in Beijing, Meng said he started to think of establishing a team.
Meng’s idea quickly got support among the underwater hockey enthusiasts, and the first underwater hockey team in Hebei Province was established within only a few days.
Among the 24 team members, people come from different occupations including teacher, policeman, hairdresser, etc. What brings them together is their enthusiasm for diving.
This newly-developed sport requires smaller sticks and a heavier ball. It is played in a 25m × 15m swimming pool that is between 2m and 4m deep. Each side consists of 10 players, with 6 players playing in the pool and 4 interchange players on the side who can substitute others at any time.
The game is made up of 15-minute halves and a 3-minute rest-time. Each team is permitted a 60 seconds time-out per half. The game clock stops for any fouls (犯规) in the last 2 minutes of the game.
The players wear large fins, a diving mask and snorkel and a thick glove to protect their hands from the pool bottom and the hockey ball. Though played underwater, it is an attractive sport for both players and hockey fans.

Think
The first step of starting anything is to think.
Judge interest
The next step of starting a club is judging interest of others. It is important to talk to friends and other students at school, because they will be the ones who finally will choose to join or stay away from your club. If they have no interest, you have no club.
Think about details
Make it official
Then you can head to the teacher’s office and tell this teacher what your club is about, along with all details. Once he or she agrees, you will likely have to fill out some paperwork to make the club official.
A.In this case, brainstorming will be very helpful. |
B.Then you may want to reconsider your idea for the club. |
C.It’s a great way to practice leadership and organizational skills. |
D.Now you can spread the word and attract others to join your club. |

The Central Provident Fund (CPF) Board conducted a Facebook contest (apps.facebook.com/areyoureadysg) last year, collecting stories and anecdotes others have to share on their difficulties in managing their finances, relating to cash flow, housing, healthcare and retirement.
Thankfully, there is now an easy way to start with the latest CPF Board initiative, Are You Ready(AYR). Launched in 2011, AYR is designed to encourage Singaporeans to kick-start their financial and retirement planning.
