Jack had waited all autumn, winter and spring for the opening day of the fishing season. Fishing was his favorite sport, and he was ready to go. His fishing pole stood by the door. He had tied a brand-new red-and-white lure (诱饵)to a three-pronged hook(三叉钩). He was going to catch the biggest fish ever in the small river by his house. However, Mom said he had housework to do.
“Jack, if you want to go fishing, you need to clean your room first," Mom said. Jack hung his head, rushed to his room, and threw himself onto his bed. Jack picked up two wrinkled (起皱的)shirts off the floor and threw them into his closet. Then he hurriedly pulled the bedspread (床罩) up over his pillow. Cleaning his bedroom didn't seem as important as not being late for the opening day of the fishing season.
Jack listened carefully to make sure where Mom was in the house. If she was in the kitchen, she might stop him to make sure he had done a good cleaning job. But if she was in the laundry room he could make a quick getaway. After several minutes, the washing machine bell finally made Mom go to the laundry room.
Jack rushed to the door, with his fishing pole on his shoulder. He paused for a moment to close the door as quietly as possible, and then ran across the field. He had escaped without being caught. Maybe Mom didn't even notice his room wasn't really clean. Taking a deep breath, Jack threw the tip of his pole back behind his shoulder and threw it forward, allowing the line to move off the wheel. He listened to the soft splash (溅泼声) of the lure as it entered the fresh, cold water in his favorite fishing hole. I was just as fun as he remembered. Soon he totally forgot his bedroom, Mom or anything else.
Paragraph 1:
Jack enjoyed watching his lure dance in the water.

"Wanted: A violin. Can’t pay much. Call…"
Why did I notice that? I wondered, since I rarely looked at advertisements. I laid the paper on my lap, remembering what had happened many years before. When my family struggled to make a living on our farm. I, too hard wanted a violin, but we didn’t have the money.
It was not a good year. At harvest time the crops did not bring as much as we had hoped. Yet, even though times were hard, I couldn’t wait any longer to ask, "Daddy, may I have a violin of my own?" Daddy’s face looked sad.
One evening, we all sat around the table. Daddy wrote a letter to his friend Mr. Finkle, in Columbus. As he wrote, Daddy read a part of his letter out to Mother. Weeks later, I discovered he’d written lines he didn’t read aloud: "Would you look for a violin for my daughter? I can’t pay much, but she enjoys much, and we’d like her to have her own instrument."
When Daddy received the letter from Columbus a few weeks later, he announced, "We will be driving to Columbus to spend the night with Aunt Alice as soon as I can find someone to care for the farm."
At last the day arrived and we drove to Aunt Alice’s. After we arrived, Daddy made a phone call. He hung up and asked, "Mary, do you want to go with me to visit Mr. Finkle ?" "Sure," I answered.
He drove into a residential area and stopped in the driveway of a fine house. A tall man, older than Daddy, opened the door. "Mary, I’ve been hearing things about you. Your daddy has arranged a big surprise for you." Mr. Finkle led us into the living room. He picked up a case, opened it, lifted out a violin, and started to play. The melody(旋律) surged and flowed like waterfalls.

Wonderful Christmas Gift
Ann and her mother had lived in a small unattractive cottage as long as Ann could remember.
Christmas was so close, and so was her birthday. Ann wished she could get a new dress as a Christmas gift. All her friends would be getting new dresses. But Ann did not want to ask her Mom for a new dress. She knew how hard her mom worked to make both ends meet. Maybe she could make a wish — maybe Santa Claus would come. Ann couldn’t help dreaming about the new dress even though she knew that Santa Claus was just an imaginary character. Her classmates were talking only of Christmas celebrations which were nearing. “My rich aunt is surely going to give me a pretty branded doll again,” said Ria. “I have been hinting about that costly watch to my parents. They are bound to gift that to me”, told Tessi. Ann felt left out in those conversations. She neither had rich parents nor rich aunt or uncle to give her expensive gifts. It was not just gift that worried Ann. It was her mother. Nowadays she was working overtime and looked pale and worn out.
The days passed and soon it was Christmas Eve. In everyone’s, except Ann’s house, a Christmas tree decorated the living room. Every child went to bed eagerly waiting for the lovely gifts that he or she would receive the next day. Ann went to bed with a heavy heart. She knew that there would be no gifts for her. Ann wished with her whole heart that at least this time she would get a gift from Santa Claus. Ann slowly drifted off to sleep. She dreamt of Santa riding in the snow on his reindeers (驯鹿).

Birthdays are typically the occasions for delight and feasting. Family and friends get together on the occasion and convey their regards with the beautiful presents they bring with themselves. I am personally a big fan of birthdays and wait for my birthday approximately a month prior to the day.
This year, my birthday came off on last Monday. I didn’t know that my parents had arranged a special party for me. At eight o'clock in the evening of my lucky birthday, I was alone at home complaining and frowning, and pitying myself for my misfortune. I thought it was going to be a special day filled with presents and fun, but all I received was a “Happy Birthday”.
All of a sudden, the electricity was cut off and there was a complete darkness in the house. I couldn’t do anything. Therefore, I decided to go to sleep and end this unlucky day.
Out of the blue in that quiet night, I heard a sudden noise coming from downstairs. Startled and terribly shocked, I suspected that someone broke into the house. Immediately, I tried to phone my parents, but no one answered.
After a couple of minutes of fear, I started to calm down. Although in the meantime I heard more noises of people talking, I summoned up some courage and started heading for the basement. As I slowly drew closer to the basement, I guessed there were more than one person, but I found it hard to believe. There couldn’t be a lot of people in our basement!
Courageously, I opened the door of the basement. There was a complete darkness. There wasn’t a single noise. However, as I approached, I heard some laughter and confirmed that there were people. Suddenly, the lights were on and there stood my parents and friends cheering at me with the beautiful presents they had carefully prepared for me. It was a surprise party! The room was beautifully decorated with colorful balloons. Tables and chairs were laid and covered with white and contrasting red sheets. A gigantic birthday cake was positioned on the innermost table.
