Bees play an essential role in the ecosystem. They not only collect nectar (花蜜) to make honey but also help with pollinating (授粉) your plants. Sadly, bees are slowly becoming an endangered species on earth, with their numbers dwindling significantly. You, however, can help increase the populations of bees, too.

While bees may be attracted to flowers in your garden, using chemicals such as herbicides and pesticides can adversely impact a bee colony (群). Unknown to many, most of these pesticides will affect or kill both good and harmful insects. In addition, bees might not know if you have already used such chemicals on your plants.

Bees are always on the hunt for good nectar; hence they won’t pass a good opportunity. In addition to practicing organic farming, introducing plants that bees find naturally attractive, such as catmint and scabious, can help attract them to your garden. The bees will thus feed on both their favorites and other flowers in the garden, too. Moreover, bees tend to fly over long distances, searching for nectar, a new hive, or even a favorite flower during summer and in spring. Long flights can be particularly exhausting and famishing. According to Bee Conservation Trust, giving the bees a drink will go a long way in saving the colony. The trust recommends mixing equal volumes of water and white sugar, then place the mixture in an open bowl, upturned bottle caps, or a bird drinker.

Beekeeping is such an honorable job, with many people taking it up as a hobby and at last a full-time job. One of the benefits of this hobby is that you get your own freshly produced honey, free from nasty chemicals. Almost everyone can become a beekeeper. All you need is a little training from the local beekeeping associations for tips on how to do it safely.

【推荐1】Every summer, the beautiful singing of thousands of American swamp sparrows can be heard across North America's wetlands. These little brown birds may know just a few songs, but they know them well.

Like humans, baby swamp sparrows learn to communicate by copying adults from a young age.Swamp sparrows very rarely make mistakes when they learn their songs.Their copy is so accurate (精准的) that the music changes little between generations. This learning ability was thought to be special only to humans.Until recently, the research found the ability in other creatures was super cool.

Between 2008 and 2009, Lachlan's research can recorded the calls of 615 swamp sparrows. The research found that only 2 percent of them sang a different song from the standard tune (曲调).The accurate copy allows the birds to create traditions that last for centuries. The song-types that you hear in the woods of North America today may well have been there about 1,000 years ago

In the modern world of human beings. the little bird's ability in singing in the same tune is outstanding.Scientists are also exploring the influence of human's activities on songbirds. Man-made barriers-such as cities and roads - can break up a bird population into several separate groups. These barriers may prevent cultural interaction between the songbird populations, such as the exchange of song types.

1. What do we know about swamp sparrows from the text?
A.They like singing songs they hear.
B.Their songs change little for long.
C.Their singing differs from each other.
D.They sing songs better than humans.
2. How are the songbirds influenced by man-made barriers?
A.They will have a smaller population.
B.They may have less communication.
C.They can sing more different songs.
D.They make more mistakes in singing.
3. What can be the best title of the text?
A.Man and NatureB.A Bird Similar to Humans
C.Song Types of the SparrowsD.A Bird with a Musical Tradition

【推荐2】Swimming alongside wild dolphins has long been on the Hawaii vacation list. However, scientists are concerned that increased human activities may do bad to the animals by disturbing a very important period of their rest. “We have seen changes in their action,” Ann Garrett of NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service said. “They will be more active with people around.”

After feeding in deep water at night, dolphins return to sheltered, shallow (浅的) water to rest during the day. The problem appears when swimmers draw them out of their resting state, a change in behavior that NOAA points out “may cause disturbance”.

“Disturbing their resting behaviors can actually affect their long-term health and the health of the population,” Garrett said. This summer, NOAA is set to put forward its new rules. “NOAA is considering a lot of measures. These measures may make some people angry, but they will undoubtedly do good to those dolphins,” Garrett said.

Today, a small number of Hawaii tour companies willingly join in a NOAA program called Dolphin SMART. Designed to lower the disturbance that dolphins suffer because of human activities to the minimum (最低限度), the program encourages tourists to stay 50 yards away from dolphins and to move away carefully if they feel the animals are disturbed.

NOAA’s new rules, however, would not be allowed to be chosen to follow or not, and could affect over 200 dolphin-related businesses as well as swimmers and other ocean users. Garrett said that new rules would keep tour companies from disturbing dolphins. “The final goal of the changes,” she said, “will be to provide more protections for dolphins while still offering a chance for tourists to have a pleasant wildlife experience”.

1. What can we learn about dolphins’ living habits from the text?
A.They sleep in deep water.
B.They hunt in shallow water.
C.They rest during the nighttime.
D.They are inactive in the daytime.
2. What does Garrett think of the measures to be taken by NOAA?
A.Perfect.B.Meaningless.C.Useful.D.Confusing.
3. Dolphin SMART is a program designed to _____________.
A.make the most use of dolphins.
B.help reduce human disturbance to dolphins.
C.let people know how smart dolphins are.
D.show how to get close to dolphins in a smart way.
4. In the last paragraph Garrett hopes that _________________.
A.new rules will be carried out immediately.
B.dolphin-related businesses will close down.
C.swimmers will choose to stay away from wildlife.
D.the changes will protect dolphins without disappointing tourists.

【推荐3】The drone (无人机) is flying above the Amazon River in Brazil, but its battery is running low. Andre Coelho, the chief pilot, guides it back to safety with skills perfected by playing video games. Long hours’ practicing has become a surprising benefit in an effort to conserve dolphins that live in the river. Marcelo Oliveira, a conservation specialist, stands on the bow of a boat. He pulls the white drone from the air, changes the battery, and quickly sends it back in the sky.

Later, scientists will examine the video which has recorded for signs of the two species of dolphins that inhabit the river: the pink and bulbous boto (亚马孙河豚), and the smaller, prettier tucuxi (白海豚). Exactly how many live in the basin is a mystery. Some studies have suggested a decline of the pink dolphins in specific areas of the Amazon River, but the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) says there isn’t enough data available for either species of dolphins.

“We need to base everything on hard data,” says Miriam Marmontel, a scientist. “We need to focus on what’s really critical to help us get to a real situation that can influence policy. We need numbers. We need information on death and reproduction.”

Marmontel’s biggest concern is that dolphins are being caught in the nets of local fishermen. Scientists have also given a warning against fishermen’s killing botos. Pollution from gold mining is also a concern.

The scientists want to use the information they collect to persuade the IUCN to list the boto and the tucuxi as endangered species. Funding agencies and governments want evidence. Without the IUCN’s categorization, it’s difficult to raise the money for protection measures.

They hope their drone monitoring will do the trick. During three trips to the Amazon last year, the team has recorded about 70 samples (样本) that will contribute to a more accurate estimate of dolphin populations in the Amazon basin.

A.Playing a video game.
B.Recording the video of the flowing river.
C.Testing the drone they designed for fun.
D.Collecting data on dolphins with a drone.
2. What can make Miriam Marmontel worry most according to the text?
A.The fishermen’s living conditions.B.The money for protection measures.
C.The pollution from the gold mining.D.The dolphins being caught by fishermen.
3. What is the purpose of the drone monitoring?
A.To raise money to protect the Amazon basin.
B.To find evidence for the need to take measures.
C.To urge governments to record Amazon species.
D.To get an exact number of species in the Amazon.
4. What is the author's attitude to the drone monitoring in the text?
A.Worried.B.Approving.C.Unfavorable.D.Unclear.
