It's not too late to register as an Ask a Graduate volunteer!
Can you inspire and guide new students from The People's Republic of China, who are hoping to study at Sheffield?
This November, the University of Sheffield is launching Ask a Graduate. A brand new volunteering programme aimed at supporting potential new students. We're looking for alumni (校友) like you to support the next generation of Sheffield students.
What is Ask a Graduate?
Ask a Graduate gives students from The People's Republic of China the opportunity to speak to you, ask questions about your Sheffield experience and discover how this has influenced your career.
You'll remember that choosing where to study was a big step. As potential students are currently unable to visit Sheffield in person, it's even more important to connect with them in other ways. By sharing your experiences, you could help inspire talented students to choose Sheffield for their masters.
What do I need to do?
Around 1.5 hours of your time on a day and time that is suitable for you, between 17th May–20th June 2022.
To be available to attend a 1 hour training session on either the 19th, 20th or 27th April.
Fill out the registration form below and provide a professional photo.
How do I register?
If you're interested in joining the programme, you can find out more and register to become an Ask a Graduate volunteer on our website.
You'll be asked to answer a few questions about your university experience and career, which we'll share with the offer holders. Please allow 10-15minutes of your time for registration. The deadline is 9thMay, 17:00 GMT+1.
If you have any questions, or you are unable to use Google Forms, please email roisha.marsden@sheffield.ac.uk.
We look forward to hearing from you!

【推荐3】At a school in North Carolina, Monica Mitchell-Giraudo, a French teacher, instructs 19 sixth-graders to gather into a circle.
“Okay, everyone, let's take a few mindful breaths, and think about our gratitude (感激) for Amy, who brought us apples for snack today,” says Monica. “What do you notice?”
“I notice my stomach is already growling (做隆隆声),” laughs Ben.
“My mouth is watering,” says David.
Next, the students hold and examine the apples. They pick up the fruit and feel it. Then they bring the apples to their noses, using their sense of smell to enjoy the flowery smell of their snack before taking the first juicy bites.
“Excellent, class,” says Monica. “Before you eat the apple, ask yourself whether or not you're hungry. Remember, you don't have to eat if your body isn't giving you a hunger signal.”
These students are learning a practice called “Mindful Eating”, which builds the children's awareness (意识) of important physical signals like hunger and fullness.
The positive feedback from the children shows how much these newly learned life skills are helping them.
“Mindful eating helps me think about the food that goes into my body,” says Jamie, a student in Monica's class. “I can make better and healthier food choices.”
Unfortunately, these kinds of courses are in short supply because many educators believe that social and emotional programs are too expensive or time-consuming (耗时的). To save costs and reduce staffing problems, prevention programs like The Body Positive are brought into the schools. The program teaches a series of self-exploration exercises that help educators examine their feelings and attitudes about food so that they can pass on these messages to their students, too.
Kathy Laughlin, director of counseling at San Domenico High School, is a fan of the training. “Since we began the program, I have not seen as many girls with problems related to body hatred,” she says. “Mindful eating practice is one of the best ways to help students develop a healthy mind and body connection — one which will help them for years to come.”

Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building
The wide-open entrance square on the Marunouchi side of Tokyo’s main train station would look more at home in Amsterdam or Paris. Kingo Tatsuno’s classical European design took over six years to complete, finally opening in 1914. The statin has received several facelifts since the Second World War, most recently in 2012. It’s one of the biggest and busiest train stations in the world.
Beijing West Railway Station
The idea of building this station in the capital of China was put forward as early as 1959 but didn’t come to reality until 1996. It was the largest station in Asia at the time, although Shanghai’s Hongqiao Station has since surpassed it. The station itself has a unique architectural (建筑的) style, with the main body of the building having quite a functional Russian look, but the rooftop is decorated with three amazing Chinese pagodas.
Duoliang Station, Taiwan
This is the smallest station on this lit by a distance. In fact we’re not really choosing Duoliang for architectural reasons. This station is all about location, location, location. Surrounded by hi top greenery on one side and amazing Pacific Ocean scenery on the other, it’s one of the most scenic spots in all of Taiwan. This isn’t even a working station anymore, but the platforms have been adapted into viewing spots, extremely popular with local train spotters.
Stazione Milano Centrale in Milan
Milan’s central train station looks pretty much exactly as you’d imagine it. There are a mix of styles at play here, from Art Nouveau to Art Deco, but the entire building is filled with a classic sense of Roman monumentality. The outer look is guarded by two statues, while its insides are equally impressive, as grand stonewalls curve (弯曲) into the station’s glass ceilings.
