Our Garden and the Salad
“Christine, come and help me in the garden. I want to plant all of the seeds today.” My father was calling to me. “I'm busy...” I said. I didn't understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.
By the end of April, his plants had come up in neat rows. Unfortunately, in early May, my father was seriously injured in an accident. He was in hospital for about two months and during that time he often asked me about his garden. Even after he came home, he had to stay in bed for a while.
My mother had several business trips so I said that I would take care of his garden. I assumed that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained fairly often so I didn't think much about the garden.
One Saturday morning in July, my father said to me, “Christine, I think that the vegetables should be about ready to be picked. Let's have a salad today!” I took a bowl and went out to the garden. I looked at the leaves and was upset to see that many of the leaves had been half eaten. There were hundreds of bugs (虫子) all over them! I tried to get them off, but there were just too many. I looked at the carrots next, but they didn't look healthy.
I got in panic for a moment, but then thought of a good idea. I quietly went to the nearest store to buy some vegetables. I went back home and cut them up to make a salad for my father. When I gave it to him, he said, “Oh, Christine, what a beautiful salad! You must be taking very good care of my garden.” My father looked happy, but I felt a little bit guilty.

I come from a broken family. My sister Jeanne and I were born only 14 months apart, but by the time we were teenagers we had lost touch. By the age 15, I had moved away from our home in Wisconsin to live on my father’s horse farm in Virginia. Jeanne moved to Chicago, and became—well, I didn’t know what. We lived separate lives in separate states, and our connection somehow ended.
Three years passed quickly and I was 18. I was used to riding my horse to the corner store where everyone knew everyone and everything went on in the quiet little cowboy town of Driver, Virginia. One day, my friend asked me to accompany her to visit the city of Shanghai in China and see the sights. It was overwhelming. We went to the Huangpu River, the Oriental Pearl Tower, Disneyland, and several clubs. I had never seen so many taxis in one spot in all my life.
During a day of sightseeing, we were crossing a very busy street loaded with people. Everyone was in a hurry, hustling and bustling (熙熙攘攘的) . My friend had said something stupid and I couldn’t help laughing loudly. At that moment, I suddenly heard my name yelled from somewhere behind me: “Cheryl!” I froze in my steps in the middle of the road. Tears welled up at the same time in my eyes. I knew without doubt that it was my sister Jeanne. I yelled back before even turning to look. “Jeanne?”
It was her. “Oh my God!” I screamed, and I began pushing people out of my way to get to her. The crowd started to part—even by Shanghai standards, we must have seemed crazy. And there we were, standing in the middle of a Shanghai street, facing each other and smiling. I couldn't believe it.

The sun was shining when Penny woke up. Usually she jumped out of bed with a happy smile for the new day. But today she just lay there frowning (皱眉).
This was the day before Mother’s Day, and Penny still had no present for Mama. She had forgotten about Mother’s Day until she had heard her brother Peter and sister Elizabeth talking last night. “I made Mama an apron (围裙) in sewing class,” Elizabeth had said proudly.
“What are you going to give Mama?” Peter asked Penny. Penny had not answered. She had ducked her head, ashamed to admit that she had spent her pocket money. She had nothing at all to give Mama on her special day.
Penny got out of bed and dressed slowly. The bag of candies she had bought yesterday reminded her of her terrible mistake.
“Well, here’s our littlest sleepyhead,” Mama said as Penny walked into the kitchen. She gave her a good-morning hug, and the smell of baked apples floated up from her apron. In a way, that made Penny feel worse because it reminded her of all the good things Mama did for her.
She remembered a hot day last summer when Mama had spent a whole afternoon making strawberry jam, because she knew Penny liked it. She thought of the moment when Mama polished her shoes and taught her to cut and arrange flowers. Sometimes she also taught Penny to make paper flowers with colorful petals (花瓣).
“Penny dear, can you eat a little faster?” Mama was talking to her. With surprise Penny noticed that everyone else had finished breakfast.
“I’m sorry, Mama.”
“Well, finish up. I have to visit old Mrs. Logan and read for her. But first, I want to get this kitchen cleaned up.” Penny watched her mother hurriedly cleaning up the kitchen. Mama was a very busy person. It seemed to Penny that sometimes Mama could use an extra pair of hands and two more feet. Suddenly she had an idea! There was a present she could give Mama, and it might be better than anything she could buy.

John lived in a village with his grandfather. Every morning men went to the farms, and children to the school. Everything was fine. Everyone was happy except John because his grandfather wouldn’t buy him chocolates or change his school bag. “For what are you saving money?” John shouted at his grandfather angrily. “These aren’t necessities. You are a very good boy. Aren’t you, my good boy?” smiled his grandfather. He knew John wasn’t bad as he presented himself. He knew deep down John had a very kind heart.” “Yes, I am good. But you are the worst person I ever met and I hate you.” Join said and stormed out of the room to the school. He was getting late as usual.
His life was like this. Every day he fought with his grandfather at least once. His wishes were not generally satisfied, which really upset him. His grandfather wasn’t poor, but he wasn’t ready to spend on chocolates and clothes.
Upon his arrival at school, he heard his friends talking about the story of the unknown. The teacher had yet not come. He places his ears to the conversation. “Do you know that someone placed 500 dollars with a message inside Mr. Darwin’s house while he was sleeping?” Said his best friend Gum. “Yes. This happened not only to Mr. Darwin but to many needy families. I wonder who did all this, perhaps, God!” replied Tommy father is ill. I wish God helps him, too.” said Gum in a low voice. “How great it is to get a surprise!” John thought.
When he returned home, his grandfather was watering the plants in their garden. On seeing him back, his grandfather asked, “How was the day, dear?” “Nothing special”, he said and went into the house. His grandfather loved gardening, who could be found in the garden almost all the time. And John found it the most boring work ever. He had a strong feeling that his grandfather wouldn’t become so selfish, if he hadn’t spent so much time alone in the garden.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________This fall break, I took my son Nels, aged 15 , for our long-planned vacation in a national park. We had a rented cottage at the foot of the mountain by a lake. And my niece Susan, aged 12, also joined us.
On the first day, abundant items kept everyone occupied: picnicking, canoeing, shooting. When night fell, we sat around the campfire singing and dancing with other vacationers, all having a great day.
Nevertheless, on the second day, I noticed Susan constantly checking her screen, busily texting. That day, she stayed indoors glued to her phone, playing Axe Climber. Then, I had an idea, announcing, "Tomorrow, we'll hike to the top of the Stone Mountains."
Hearing this, Susan shrugged, as if to say, "Why?"
Eyes fixed on Susan, I continued, "Put your phone aside and climb a real mountain, OK?"
"Well," Susan responded reluctantly, "the Axe Climber is moving up to the final level, so I'll not be available tomorrow."
"Susan, that's not the actual wilderness experience. I hiked a lot. It's greater fun," Nels said persuasively.
"Sounds more like punishment," she mumbled. "I hate sweating."
"Never have you been on a mountaintop. Susan, have a go this time, and you are sure to love the feeling and pleasure it brings."
She finally nodded unwillingly, "Fine, I'll give it a try."
I smiled. Anyway, she agreed. The next morning, we awakened to the sound of birds singing. It was a nice day with the sun shining mildly and clouds floating leisurely. "A perfect day for hiking," I said. "I will go, Uncle," Susan replied mechanically.
Packing bread, bottled water and camera into the backpack, we set out for our destination. Against the blue sky, a rough trail wound its way to the top of the mountain.
"I still don't think it's a good idea," Susan complained, frowning.
"No pains, no gains! Come on!" I encouraged.

Wally, my goldendoodle, has come to work with me every day since the start of the pandemic. He was there on the morning this February when a colleague came into my office and said, “The dog resort’s on fire.” My initial reaction was disbelief. I know the resort well — it’s just across the road from my office and offers daycare and boarding services for pets. Wally had stayed there when he was a puppy.
I got up from my desk, and thought, “OK, Wally, you’re staying here.” He gets anxious when I leave, so I shut the door behind me.
It was a surprisingly nice day for that time of year in Seattle, but as I got outside I saw the big plume of grey-black smoke above us. You could smell it, too. The smoke was barrelling out (涌出) from what looked like the middle of the single-storey warehouse-style building. I later found out the fire had been sparked in a dryer vent, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.
By that point, the firefighters were at the scene. There was so much noise. Suddenly it hit us: we’ve got to get the dogs out. A handful of colleagues, along with people from other nearby businesses, made their way to the building and started grabbing dogs that were being herded (聚集) to the entrance by the firefighters inside.
Our offices have a big gated yard, so we decided to get them in there first. We would pick them up and give them attention. We each had a different role. Some were to help secure the yard with plywood so the dogs couldn’t escape while others were to comfort them as most of the smaller dogs were scared.
