Stealing salt was considered a major crime (罪行) during some periods of history. In the eighteenth century, for example, if a person was caught stealing salt, he could be put in prison and his ears could be cut off.
In the Roman Empire, one of the most important roads was the one that carried salt from the salt mines to Rome. Guards were stationed along the route to protect against salt thieves, and they received their pay in salt, thus bringing the English word, salary. Any guard who fell asleep while on duty was thought to be “not worth his salt”, and as a result he would get a little less salt on his next payday. The expression, “not worth his salt”, is still used today in English.
In the modern world salt has many uses beyond the dining table. It is used in making glass and airplane parts, in the growing of crops, and in the killing of weeds (杂草). It is also used to make water soft, to melt (融化) ice on roads and highways, to make soap, and to fix colors in cloth.
Salt can be got in various ways besides being taken from mines underground. Salt water from the ocean, salt water lakes or small seas can be used to make salt. Yet, no matter where it comes from, salt will continue to play an important role in the lives of people everywhere.

[1]Cooking carrots whole before chopping them up increases their anti-cancer properties by 25 percent, researchers say.
[2]Leaving the vegetable intact (完整的) prevents valuable nutrients from being easily washed away into water. They can then be chopped up once cooked without loss of nutrients.
[3]Carrots have long been prized for their health benefits, especially their vitamin and fiber content. They contain huge amounts of carotenoids which are converted into vitamin A in the body. They are also an excellent source of the anti-cancer compound falcarion (镰叶芹醇). In a previous study, Dr Kirsten Brandt found rats fed on a diet containing carrots or isolated falcarino were less likely to develop tumors than those which were not.
[4]They also found that carrots boiled before they were cut contained 25 percent more falcarino than those that were chopped up first. Carrots which are cut have a higher surface area in contact with water, resulting in greater loss of nutrients, compared with boiling them whole. The heat softens the cell walls in the vegetable, allowing vitamins and falcarino to leach (过滤)out.
[5]Dr Brandt said, "The great thing about this is that it's a simple way for people to increase their uptake of a compound, which is good for you. All you need is a bigger saucepan. Naturally occurring sugars, responsible for giving the carrots its sweet flavor, were also found in higher concentration in carrots that had been cooked whole."
[6]The team also carried out a taste on almost 100 volunteers comparing carrots boiled before being cut and some that are cut up first. More than 80 percent of volunteers said that carrots cooked whole tasted much better.
[7]Boiling carrots whole appears to help them keep more of the nutrients. This is really a piece of good news because the method is of great value. Some other vegetables, such as parsnips (欧洲萝卜) which are from the same family and have a roughly similar size and texture can also be more nutritious by ________.

According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, people’s guilty feeling may be well-placed.The research, which researched potato eating in 4,400 older people between ages of 45 and 79 over the course of eight years, shows that eating fried potatoes at least twice a week highly increases our risk of death.
But hold up!Before you completely stop eating potatoes, you should know that it is found that eating potatoes overall(even a lot of them)wouldn’t kill you.Instead,it’s the type of potato that makes all the difference between life and death.
Eating fried potatoes like French fries at least twice per week increased the risk of death in the study. On the other hand, potatoes that were not fried, such as boiled and baked potatoes, were less likely to cause death.
Why?Potatoes have healthy levels of fiber(纤维)and vitamins(维生素),so you can partake without feeling bad.But when it comes to the fried food, you might need to think again.French fries usually have lots of fat and added salt, leading to weight growth.Still, when all is said and done, connection isn’t totally equal to causation(因果关系).More research is needed before certainly concluding that eating French fries alone increases the risk of death.
Luckily, potatoes are still considered as one of your suggested three to five servings of vegetables per day.Just try not to eat the fatty ones,if you can.

The long and delicious bread was added to UNFSCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, making its technique and culture an important part of human culture and protecting its baking process. The traditional production process consists of complex ingredients (原料)and steps, but unlike other loaves, the baguette is made with only four ingredients, flour, water, salt and leaven, from which each baker gets a unique product. Baguettes are baked throughout the day in small quantity and the outcomes vary according to the temperature and humidity (湿度).
With the bread’s new status, the French government said it planned to create a baguette day, called the “Open Bakehouse Day”, to connect the French better with their heritage.
The baguette’s inclusion “celebrates the French way of life,” UNESCO chief Audrey Azoulay said, “The baguette is a daily ritual, a structuring element of the meal, synonymous with sharing and joy.”
“It is a great day for the bakers and we are very proud of this product which symbolize French people,” Anne Aldeguer, from the French Confederation of Bakers, told CBS News, “It is important that these skills and social habits continue to exist in the future.”
UNESCO says intangible cultural heritage does not end at monuments and collections of objects. It also includes translations or living expressions inherited(继承) from our ancestors and passed on to our descendants. Intangible cultural heritage is an important factor in maintaining cultural diversity in the face of growing globalization, through which the wealth of knowledge and skills is transmitted from one generation to the next. The American Romanticism began from the end of the 18th century to the outbreak of the Civil War, which is also called the American Renaissance. The period is as well as the time of American Westward Expansion. During the period, there were lots of workforces crowding to the cities, which promoted the industry. The people found that they needed their own literature to record their experiences. So the Romanticism flourished.
The Romanticism in American literature focuses on imagination and emotional factors. The American writers paid more attention to the free expression of feelings and the characters’ inner world. During the romantic period, there were many writers: Philip Freneau, William Cullen Bryant and so on.
The Realism in American literature was from 1865 to 1914, and it takes on the American spirit, especially in American stories. The Realism against the Romanticism, advocates the people to come down to the earth and get rid of daydreams.
During the 50 years from the Civil War to the WWI, the America had experienced a great change on many aspects, such as the politics, economy, culture and religion. It had changed the nature and the idea of the American society. The writers of new age didn’t agree with the Romanticism of the old age. They were interested in real life and wanted to explain everything relating to the real life, which is to claim the objective reality, to get rid of idealism and Romanticism.

Rolex, the whisper of success
According to Hans Wilsdorf, founder of the exclusive watch, he tried everything to give his new product a proper name. Wilsdorf was looking for something short that could be easily pronounced. It also had to look good on the watch's surface.
After combining all the letters in thousands of ways and coming up with a hundred names, none seemed powerful enough. But a trip on a horse-drawn carriage changed it, because a "genius," as he called it, whispered the word "Rolex" into his ear.
Zara, taking inspiration from a movie
When Amancio Ortega wanted to name his clothing business, he called it "Zorba," like the 1964 movie, Zorba The Greek, as he was a big fan of Anthony Quinn.
However, shortly before the opening in 1975, he realized that his store was pretty close to a bar named, "Zorba." Since it would be very confusing to the customers to have 2 businesses with the same name in such a small distance, Ortega decided to add an "a" and remove the "b" creating the name of one of the most recognizable Spanish brands in the world.
Häagen-Dazs, Danish?...pride
This ice cream went a long way to satisfy the tastes of the American public. Its creator, Reuben Mattus, was actually a Jewish immigrant from Poland who lived in the United States.
Naming his ice cream Häagen-Dazs, he fulfilled a double purpose. Mattus wanted to honor Denmark, the only country that defended Jewish people during World War II, so he used Danish spelling in the name of his brand. He also wanted to add a bit of exoticism (异国情调), since it was ice cream of the highest quality. He was sure the name would give his product a more distinguished image.

The first performance for which a firm record remains was Jonson's Every Man out of His Humour—with its fist scene welcoming the "gracious and kind spectator""- at the end of the ear.
On 29h June 1613, the GLOBE Theatre went up in flames during a performance of Henry VII. A theatrical gun, set off during the performance, misfired, burning the wooden beams and straws. According to one of the few surviving documents of the event, no one was hurt except a man whose burning breeches (炮后膛) were put out with a bottle of beer. It was rebuilt in the following year.
Like all he other theatres in London, the GLOBE was closed down by the Puritns in 1642. It was pulled down in 1644, or slightly later — the commonly cited document dating the act to 15 April 1644 has been identified as false-to make room for other buildings. A modern reconstruction of the theatre, named "Shakespeare's GLOBE", opened in 1997, with a production of Henry V. It is an academic approximation of the original design, based on available evidence of the 1599 and 1614 buildings, and is located about 750 feet (230m)from the site of the original theatre.

Study leader Javaan Chahl believes that winged drones based on the dragonfly’s shape and movement will simply be more flexible and energy efficient.
Chahl’s team used a special photography technique to classify the wing shapes of 75 different dragonfly species from museum collections. Their wings are long, light and hard. Plus, their long bodies give them excellent stability and balance, making it possible for winged drones to deliver awkward loads and undertake long observation missions.
Investigating the way that dragonflies remain stable during flight actually reveals the techniques they use to get themselves out of tricky situations. Dragonflies are found to be able to perform upside-down backflips to regain balance and normal flight, when they find themselves upside down mid-air. This special skill can even be performed while dragonflies are unconscious, meaning it is a passive stability mechanism similar in concept to planes that are designed to glide to safety with their engines turned off. Engineers are looking to copy dragonfly wings to create safer drones that can right themselves.
Of course, not all attempts to build dragonfly-like drones are successful. TechJet’s air vehicle was supposed to operate as an aerial camera, observation and security drone, but it failed before production got underway. Similarly, Insectothopter, an American dragonfly spy drone built in the 1970 s was deserted.
Yet the principles behind winged drones are solid. In fact, NASA has settled on a nuclear-powered autonomous craft called Dragonfly to explore the surface of Saturn’s moon Titan in 2034. NASA’s project is actually an air vehicle, rather than a winged drone, but engineers are still convinced they can crack the code of nature’s most gifted flying insect and revolutionize unmanned flight along the way.

When Christopher Kulish finally reached Mount Everest’s 29,035-foot peak, he joined an elite group known as the “Seven Summits Club”. But the 62-year-old Colorado attorney died suddenly Monday after returning to the first camp below the mountain’s summit. He’s the second American to die in the past week after reaching Everest’s highest point. His family believes the cause was a heart attack, according to the Denver Post. “He saw his last sunrise from the highest peak on Earth,” his brother, Mark Kulish, said in a statement to the Denver Post. “We are heartbroken at this news.”
Last week, 55-year-old Donald Lynn Cash of Utah collapsed and died just after reaching the Everest peak. He too had reached the highest point on all seven continents. Including Christopher and Cash, at least 11 people have died on Mount Everest this year.
The deaths come among reports of overcrowding on the popular mountain. The Nepali government granted a total of 381 permits to climb Everest this year, a number that doesn’t include guides who are on the mountain as well. For some climbers, that traffic has meant longer wait times — some told the Himalayan Times the wait has exceeded two hours between the last camp and the peak. Mountaineer Vanessa O’Brien, who has also climbed the seven summits, said when there’s a crowd, being a more experienced climber won’t help you. “It doesn’t matter if you’re the best racecar driver in the world. If you’re stuck in traffic, you’re stuck in traffic,” she said in an interview.
And when a climber is stuck in that traffic, “their body is starting to deteriorate.” O’Brien, who set a record as the fastest woman to reach the highest peak on every continent, also said the descent is often harder than the climb.
Climbing expert Alan Arnette said there’s no simple explanation for the string of deaths. He said weather that has led to a shorter climbing season is one factor causing overcrowding. He also said the cost to climb Mount Everest has decreased, which means more people are making the journey. He urged the governments in charge of granting permits to limit how many people can be on the mountain at once.
Still, Christopher was no beginner. His family said he’d been mountain climbing for five decades. He arrived at the base camp nearly two months before his climb so he could give himself time to adapt to the conditions. When he made his journey, his family said he was climbing with a small group in almost ideal conditions after some of the overcrowding had cleared.
His brother described being a lawyer as a “day job” for Christopher. Climbing was his passion. “He was an inveterate climber of peaks in Colorado, the West and the world over,” Mark Kulish said. “He passed away doing what he loved.”

Michalis Vousdoukas, of the European Union’s Joint Research Center in Ispra, Italy, was the lead researcher. “Tourist areas which have sandy beaches as their main selling point will probably face strong consequences.” he said. Aside from economic value, beaches play an important environmental role. “Sandy beaches are important habitats supporting a wide range of species. They also protect the coast from the effects of storms, so without sandy beaches other inland environments can be affected by the effects of waves and saltwater entering,”Vousdoukas added.
The main causes are rising sea-level and erosion (侵蚀) from storms, the study says, which warned of the near-disappearance of almost half of the world’s sandy beaches by the end of the century. Beaches in the United States will be “greatly affected”, as will shorelines in Canada, Mexico, China and Chile. In the U.S., beaches along the East Coast and the Gulf Coast will experience the most erosion.
Michalis Vousdoukas and other researchers used satellite images to track the way beaches have changed over the past 30 years and patterned how global warming might affect them in the future. They found that West Africa will see some of the worst losses, where more than 60% of sandy coastline may be lost in countries such as The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau. Australia will also take a hit: when the total length of sandy beach projected to be lost is analyzed Australia would be hit the hardest, with more than 7,000 miles at risk.
