The watch was my grandfather’s. He hung it by his bed. The face was marked with elegant Roman numbers and the case was gold. My grandfather got it after his fifty years of devotion to his company. I often gazed at it longingly as I sat with my grandfather after school.
The day I told him of my success in the examinations, he was pleased, “You’ll be going to the new school next, Peter. Remember you’ll need plenty of patience. That’s the right way.” I nodded when handing him the watch.
The next morning my mother told me he had died in his sleep and left me his watch. For safety, my mother was to put it away until she considered me old enough to look after it. I protested (抗议) so strongly that she finally agreed to hang it in the kitchen where I could always see it.
The summer soon ended and it was time for me to enter the new school. I never made friends easily, and for a time I got along well with some boys. One of them was a rich fellow whose way of impressing us was to parade his belongings before us. Everything Crawley had was better than ours—until he showed off his watch.
“I have a better watch than that,” I announced, attempting to impress them. “Well, show it to us,” Crawley sneered (冷笑) in disbelief. Embarrassed, I promised to bring it to them that afternoon.
Considering there was no way to persuade my mother to let me take the watch, I decided to wait for her to step outside and slip the watch into my pocket. So I did. After lunch, as I was too excited to wait for the return bus, I got on my bike.
I rode fast, excitement crowding in. At the sight of school, I sped up. Then out of nowhere, a little dog ran out into my path. I pulled at my brakes so hard that the bike stopped suddenly and I fell over.

It was a long weekend in May 2018 and my friend, Gabe Rosescu, and I were taking a road trip from my home in the city of Weyburn to visit friends in Nelson, British Columbia. Gabe had broken his orbital bone, and nasal and cheek bones. His head was badly hurt and his vision was damaged. But the body is an amazing thing, and somehow we were both able to crawl out of that car.
I was so focused on our survival that I didn’t notice how seriously the car was damaged or where we were. We had no phone signal, so all we could think to do was yell for help. But my chest hurt too much to even breathe. So Gabe started shouting as loud as he could.

He had no trouble getting down. Usually he aimed for Dad. “That cat!” Dad yelled. Checkers flushed the toilet and watched the water circle away. “That cat!” Dad was almost mad. Checkers hid in strange places. He liked to surprise people.
One day he hid under the couch (睡椅). Dad walked by with a glass of orange juice. Checkers jumped out. He curled around Dad’s ankle and attacked Dad’s toes. Orange juice spilt all over the floor. Dad yelled and put Checkers outside. “Get out of my way, cat!” he said angrily. And he slammed the door.
Dad washed the injured toes and peeled open a bandage. He wrapped it around his big toe, and then he opened four more for his ankle.
I watched from the window. Checkers looked frustrated as he walked down the road.
“I’m sorry Checkers scratched you,” I said. “He was just playing. He didn’t mean to hurt you.”
“Don’t worry,” said Dad. “That cat will be back.”
After supper I called for Checkers. But Checkers didn’t come. Night time came. I called and called. I knocked his food dish with a spoon loudly. But still no Checkers. I left the porch light on. But the next morning Checkers still wasn’t there.
I carried a picture of Checkers to all the neighbors. I drew posters and hung them all over. But nobody found Checkers.
Days went by. Life wasn’t the same without that cat. I was angry with Dad. I didn’t think he missed Checkers at all.

By now the stubborn cow was walking along nicely, so Mr. Barnes excused himself and took a path through a wooded area that led to his back door. As soon as he got into the house, he gave one of his trusted workers a fifty-dollar bill and told him to give it to the boy who was delivering the cow. After the cow had been left at the house and the boy was returning to the ranch, Mr. Barnes went out again and met the boy on the road.
“Well, how much did you get?” asked Mr. Barnes.
“Five dollars,” answered the boy.
