Costa Rica is about two-thirds the size of Scotland but still shelters five percent of the world’s biodiversity (生物多样性). Covered by rainforest and cloud forest, filled with 129 volcanoes and washed by both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, it is a dream destination for visitors.
In the cloud forest, hundreds of orchid (兰花) species bloom, beautiful birds sing and butterflies flash their colorful wings, while on the Caribbean coast, four species of turtle choose the warm sands as their annual nesting sites.
If you love adventure, try hiking through the lava fields of Arenal Volcano, which is among the ten most active in the world and standing at 5,437 feet tall, or walk through the cloud forest on a series of zip lines in Monteverde. And you are happy with the choice when it comes to accommodation. Will you stay in a tree house or a hotel on the beach? The options are endless.
Now it is easier to get to Costa Rica. In 2016, British Airways launched a direct flight from London Gatwick to San Jose, so you can now reach the nation in less than 11 hours. Once you arrive, touring the country is simple. There are domestic flights if you are short of time. Many hotels and tour operators put together good packages to visit local highlights, or if you prefer, you can even rent a car.
Costa Rica is a year-round destination, with the driest period between December and April. For the rest of the year, the scenery looks more green and amazing, with sunny mornings and showers in the afternoon.
A beautiful rainforest country in Central America, Costa Rica has coastlines on both the Caribbean and Pacific Ocean and some of the world’s best beaches. Costa Rica’s diversity of scenery and natural wonders provides visitors with adventure, relaxation, romance and exploration.

The country’s deepest lake with a depth of nearly 2,000 feet, there are few other lakes in the world that can compare to the intense blue colour of Crater Lake. Located in Oregon’s only national park, the often still waters reflect the mountain peaks that surround it like a dark blue mirror. It was created more than 7,500 years ago by the collapse of Mount Mazama and attracts many outdoor adventurers who come to swim, fish, take a boat tour, hike, and camp. It’s even a popular diving site with the chance to dive into a flooded volcano.

Located in the Cascade Mountains just over 40 miles southwest of Bend, Crane Prairie Reservoir offers 24 miles of shoreline and some of the best rainbow trout (鳟鱼) fishing in Oregon, with catches that are usually over 10 pounds. Brook trout, whitefish, largemouth bass, and kokanee salmon also live in its waters.
Wallowa Lake
Located just south of the town of Joseph in the corner of northeast Oregon, Wallowa Lake sits at the doorstep of the state’s largest wilderness area, Eagle Cap. It’s surrounded on three sides by 9,000-foot-high mountains. On land, there are hiking, biking, horseback riding, and wildlife watching can all be enjoyed.

You may think what you say on WeChat is your own business, but apparently the Canadian authorities don’t agree. In other words, you need to be fully aware of the items you’re not allowed to bring before you travel abroad.
Obscene(淫秽) and pirated(盗版)materials
In many Western countries, possessing and transporting underage porn(黄色书刊) is considered a serious crime. According to the United States Department of Justice, a first-time offender charged with producing child porn faces fines and 15 to 30 years in prison. The website of UK Visas and Immigration also listed pirated copies of movies and music as illegal, because they infringe upon intellectual property rights. If you’re caught bringing pirated products into the UK, the products will be confiscated(没收), and you may face prosecution.
Food, animals and plants
According to Australia’s Department of Immigration and Border Protection, Australia has strict quarantine laws. Animals from overseas could bring diseases and pests into the country and destroy the local environment.
Cash
There is a limit of cash you can bring when traveling abroad. According to UK Visas and Immigration, the maximum amount of cash(including bankers’ drafts and checks) you can bring into the country is £10,000(72,000yuan). You’ll have to declare it if you’re bringing more, or you could face a fine of up to £5,000(46,000yuan). But if you’re entering the UK from another European Union country, you don’t need to declare your cash, no matter how much you have.
Other items
Customs rules vary from country to country. For example, when entering Australia you also need to declare traditional medicines because they may contain endangered plant or animal products. Heritage-related goods, including artworks and stamps, also need to be declared. This is why you should always check the local customs website to make sure of what you can put into your luggage, and of course, your electronic devices.

I was tired when our driver picked us up, but the view of graffiti written in German,Russian, and Hungarian just blew me away. As we got closer to the city, I felt like I was in a place that was magically changed through time and none in the city had noticed.
I felt as if it was a forgotten place, but it really shouldn't be. I found the air of Budapest to be welcoming and nearly everyone was friendly. Most younger people there speak English, but the non-English speakers were helpful in trying to explain to me that I had given them the wrong amount of forints in paying for an item. If you're interested in shopping, there is the Mammut which is a nice sized mall on the Buda side of the Danube. The locals explained to us that we should not shop at the mall because it is expensive.
When I checked out at an awesome store called Jazz,I found the opposite.I got a formal gown for$14!!! Looking back,I'd like to go to the places where the locals shopped. I stayed at the Mohácsi Panzió. It was $50 a night and the breakfast was wonderful. Our room overlooked a garden and was on the second story of the house, where you could see the hills in the distance. Heroes Square is a wonderful site where people just walk by like it's nothing. The pavement there is very flat which is great for rollerblading.
When I was there we played "futbol" with a plastic piece of tubing we found near the trash.Margit Island is a very strange site for me to come upon in one of the oldest cities in Europe. It is a huge park just inside the city. A lot of activities can be found on that island, from playing futbol to riding around on really strange-looking bikes. If you ever decide to take a trip to Budapest, you may never want to come back.

One of the most famous residents of Tuscumbia was Helen Keller. Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880. Her home was a white frame cottage built by her grandparents. Since ivy (常春藤) grew everywhere, the house was called Ivy Green. It was here, at the water pump in the backyard, that Keller learned the word “w-a-t-e-r” with the help of her teacher, Anne Sullivan. Visitors to Ivy Green can walk under boxwood trees that are 150 years old. The home has furniture that the Keller family used. It also has Keller’s Braille (盲文) books and her original Braille typewriter.
Spring Park is Tuscumbia’s most popular park and favorite tourist attraction. This park has the world’s largest manufactured waterfall called Coldwater Falls. The Spring Park Light and Water Show is an amazing sight to see. It takes place every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at sundown. The water appears to dance to music and colored lights. The music played during the show is recorded by singers and musicians from Alabama.
Fame Recording Studios is in the city of Muscle Shoals in Colbert County. The studio is the first successful recording studio in Alabama. It is best known for creating “Southern rock,” “Southern soul,” and “county soul.” Well-known performers like Aretha Franklin and musical groups such as Alabama and Lynyrd have made recordings at this studio.
Visitors can continue to explore music in Alabama by visiting the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in Tuscumbia. Built in 1990, this site recognizes the musical talents of more than 500 Alabama residents in a wide variety of musical styles, including country and rhythm and blues.

“A salamander (a small lizard-like animal) can grow back its leg. Why can't a human do the same?” asked Peruvian-born surgeon Dr. Anthony Atala in a recent interview. The question, a reference to work aiming to grow new limbs for wounded soldiers, captures the inventive spirit of regenerative medicine. This innovative field seeks to provide patients with replacement body parts. These parts are not made of steel; they are the real things - living cells, tissue, and even organs.
The field of regenerative medicine builds on work conducted in the early twentieth century with the first successful transplants (移植) of donated human soft tissue and bone. However, donor organs are not always the best option. First of all, they are in short supply, and many people die while waiting for an available organ; in the United States alone, more than 100, 000 people are waiting for organ transplants. Secondly, a patient's body may ultimately reject the transplanted donor organ. An advantage of regenerative medicine is that the tissues are grown from a patient's own cells and will not be rejected by the body's immune system.
Today, several labs are working to create bio-artificial body parts. Scientists at Columbia and Yale Universities have grown a jawbone and a lung. At the University of Minnesota, Doris Taylor has created a beating bio-artificial rat heart. Dr. Atala's medical team has reported long-term success with bioengineered bladders implanted into young patients with spina bifida (脊柱裂). And at the University of Michigan, H. David Humes has created an artificial kidney.
So far, the kidney procedure has only been used successfully with sheep, but there is hope that one day similar kidney will be implantable in a human patient. The continuing research of scientists such as these may eventually make donor organs unnecessary and, as a result, significantly increase individuals' chances of survival.
1. What does the underlined word “regenerative” in paragraph 2 probably mean?A.reproduced | B.replaced |
C.recovered | D.reviewed |
A.Because there are not enough donor organs and patients' bodies may reject them |
B.Because donor organs are too expensive and patients can't afford them |
C.Because some patients are in such a serious situation that they can't stand an operation |
D.Because donors themselves may have some kinds of illness and may pass it to the receivers |
A.By giving data | B.By comparing effects |
C.By giving examples | D.By showing different ideas |
A.Negative | B.Doubtful |
C.Indifferent | D.Hopeful |

Cultural heritage doesn’t consist of money or property(财产), but of cultures, values and traditions. Cultural heritage means a shared connection, our belonging to a community. It represents our history and our identity; our connection with the past, our present, and the future.
Cultural heritage is also the result of a selection process: a process of remembering and forgetting that characterizes every human society constantly engaged in choosing—for both cultural and political reasons—what is worthy of being protected for future generations and what is not.
All peoples make their contribution to the culture of the world. That’s why it’s important to respect and safeguard all cultural heritage, through national laws and international agreements. Illegal trade of cultural objects, plundering other countries’ cultural heritage in war, and destruction of historical buildings and monuments cause irreparable damage to the cultural heritage of a country. UNESCO, founded in 1954, has adopted international agreements on the protection of cultural heritage, to promote intercultural understanding while stressing the importance of international cooperation.
The protection of cultural property is an old problem. One of the most common issues in protecting cultural heritage is the difficult relationship between the interests of the individual and the community.
Ancient Romans established that a work of art could be considered part of the heritage of the whole community, even if privately owned. For example, sculptures decorating the face of a private building were recognized as having a common value and couldn’t be removed, since they stood in a public site, where they could be seen by all citizens.
Cultural heritage passed down to us from our parents must be protected for the benefit of all. In an era of globalization, cultural heritage helps us remember our culture, and its understanding develops respect for each other and increases dialogues between different cultures.
1. How does the author explain “cultural heritage”?A.By offering examples. | B.By quoting experts. |
