A week ago I went on a drive to explore an area of Eastern Washington that I’m not familiar with at all. It was the rolling countryside north of where I live, near the little town of Manson.
The geography here is dry but lower, wider, and full of rolling hills. The area miles intothe distance towards the East. It seemslike a very rural, mainly uninhabited (杳无人烟的) area, but actually, as you explore, you quickly realize that there are houses even in the most remote (遥远的) looking areas, little pockets of human life here and there.
I think that people who live in these areas are either retired, working remotely from home, or really need the peace and energy that the quiet countryside can give.
Driving up a lonely, winding road, suddenly there was a flash of color above that passed over the car. Of all things it was a peacock (孔雀). What on earth was it doing in this remote area? It seemed really out of place. It flew from one side of the road to the hill on the other, joining eight others that were already there, enjoying the sun. Their colors were brilliant. And yes, they seemed more comfortable in that area than in palace gardens. They are, after all, very much like pheasants (野鸡), just much more beautiful. Someone nearby must have attended them. I could only see one female; of course she wasn’t as beautiful to look at as the males. Her feather was much more like the grass and rocks of her surroundings.
These little day trips always seem to bring surprises, even in remote areas. There is always something that will prove to be unexpected.

The prolonged dry season in tropical areas usually causes a lot of losses. It will be very harmful to local farmers, because most of the tropical areas are regions of the developing countries. Sometimes agricultural and plantation crops will be damaged because of so much dry land and the fact that the river used to flow the water for rice fields are also dry. If you are visiting with a child, take a moment to explain the ride to them, and tell them how they should behave. They are depending upon you to keep them safe. Set a good example for them by following the rules of the park, and make sure that they know you expect them to follow those rules, too.
Tell them to stay seated, to hold the grab bar or put their hands in the laps, and not to stick their knees and feet outside a ride vehicle. Make them look to you for the okay to get on or off a ride, too.
And never put a crying child on a ride. If your child starts to cry, let others pass you in line until your child is calmed. Or, gently exit the queue and find something more relaxing to do.
Young kids can’t keep an adult’s pace in a theme park. Let them take plenty of breaks.
“Kids get tired,” said TPI reader Matt Johnson, a father of four. “Tired kids make parents even more tired. And tired kids and parents may get hurt — physically and emotionally.” He advises that parents plan a mid-day break, perhaps a swim back at the hotel, to avoid mid-day heat and crowds. “You will see cranky families having a miserable time while you are refreshed and having a great evening.”

One day in particular, his doorbell rang, and there stood a finely dressed young gentleman in a three piece suit. “Uh oh,” the man thought. “Jehovah’s Witness.” But before he could do anything, his guest spoke.
“You’re the rich man, aren’t you?” his guest asked.
“What can I do for you?” the man responded automatically, so accustomed to being asked for things.
“It is not what you can do for me,” answered his guest. “But what you have already done. ”
“What have I done for you?” the man asked in surprise.
“You’ve given me a second chance at life. Why, with your generous gift, I was able to invest the money and pull myself out of my poverty. I no longer wallow in the grime and gutters, but I walk along crowded sidewalks with my head held high. I have you to thank for that. ”
Suddenly, the man recognized his guest. It was the old bum (流浪汉) who’d been lying in the street. The man replied, “What I gave you, you did not ask for. I gave it simply because I saw you there and loved you. I would have given it to anyone in your position.”
“All the more reason to come and thank you,” his guest said.
“But I am rich,” replied the man. “I have many gifts to give. I don’t expect anything in return.”
“Good,” his guest said with a nod. “Because I don’t have anything to offer in return. Whatever I have, you gave to me. All I wanted to do was come and thank you.”
The man stared as his guest reached out and took him into an embrace. It was the same gesture the man had so often offered to those at his door, yet this was the first time someone had offered it back.

Before that, I knew very little about Cadiz but I decided to take a risk and explore it. Well, the risk certainly paid off.
Cadiz, Europe’s oldest city, hangs off Spain’s southern coast on a peninsula (半岛), surrounded almost entirely by water. As you leave the shady streets of the historical old city and explore more of it, you are met with vast areas of the blue Atlantic Ocean and white sandy beaches, which in my opinion are some of the best in Spain!
One of the great things about Cadiz is the wonderful, rich culture of food and drink. There are little tapas (小吃) bars lining every street and most will serve tapas for around 1.50~2 euros, meaning you can try a whole variety of Andalusian dishes.
Cadiz has also come to be known as “The Singing City”. It comes from the annual carnival (狂欢节), one of the biggest in Europe. A very large number of people go to Cadiz to see it. During those ten days, Cadiz’s narrow streets are filed with the sound of singing as musical groups fight for a place in the contest, which takes place on the last Saturday of carnival. The songs perfectly show the sense of humor of the Gaditanos, who, besides being so warm and welcoming, are said to have the best sense of humor in Spain!
That is my experience of Cadiz: a wonderful, typically Andalusian city which is often overlooked but well worth a visit. I can currently living in Huelva, just a short drive from Cadiz, so please pay attention to my next sharing!

C.Many grand carnivals attract well-known singers. |

This gets me thinking about starting a book club for the upper elementary kids to meet in during lunch. This idea has the added benefit of giving my very shy daughter a chance to make some connections with other kids who like books as much as she does.
This is how I’m starting our book club. After getting permission from the principal and finding a space in the school to hold our meetings, I’ll send out a flier (传单) in our Friday school notes with my contact information. At our first meeting we’ll think of a name for our book club and decide together on the first two books we will read.
I absolutely love the idea of a mother-daughter book club. The reason is that my friend, mother of a teenage daughter, told me she always tried to befriend all the mothers of her daughter’s friends. As a group they’re better able to know what the girls are doing.
Now that my daughter is in the fourth grade and we’re at a new school, I’m feeling especially drawn to start forming relationships with the mothers of her friends. A book club seems like a good way to do that with the added benefit of getting to open up communication between daughters and mothers, because in a few years a lot of our daughters won’t really want to talk to us.
1. What is the original reason why the author wants to start a book club?A.Her daughter is too shy. |
B.There are no books for children to read. |
C.There is no playground for children to play on. |
D.The children fail to communicate with each other. |
A.Her daughter’s grades will promote. |
B.It can help her daughter communicate with others. |
C.His daughter is more and more fond of reading in the book club. |
D.This makes his daughter more and more busy with her housework. |
A.The club attracted more students to read. |
B.His daughter can make more good friends. |
C.It’s easy for her to get to know her daughter better. |
D.His daughter likes to communicate with more people. |
A.To share a valuable plan. |
B.To apply for joining a book club. |
C.To give the school a piece of advice. |
D.To ask people to befriend by reading. |
