The past two years has been tough for so many people. There’s been a mix of worry and annoyance due to COVID-19. And with the pandemic being still threatening, people are continuing to struggle and in need of a smile.
With this in mind, we wanted to share the story of Jaden Hayes, whose take on sadness and anxiety is totally refreshing.
When Jaden Hayes was only 4 years old, his dad passed away. Two years later his mom died in her sleep. “I tried and tried to get her awake — but I couldn’t,” the orphan (孤儿) explained in an interview. However, in his grief he realized how difficult it was for him to see others around him feeling sad. So he wanted to do something to make them smile. With the help of his aunt and guardian at the time, Barbara DiCola, he went and bought lots of little toys to hand out to passers-by in Savannah, Georgia, whose spirits needed to be raised.
All little Jaden Hayes wants in return is to make people smile. Unsurprisingly, his efforts have worked! “It’s like absolute joy came out of this child, and the more people he made smile, the more this light shone,” explained his aunt. While he readily admitted that he was still sad about his mother’s death, the smile mission had given him a sense of purpose.
Now, a few years later, Jaden is still keeping up his good work. His Facebook page, Jaden’s Journey, describes how this young “smile maker” is still bringing joy to others.
His initial aim was to make 33,000 people smile through his kind deeds, but by spreading his story we’re pretty sure he’s managed to inspire many more smiles, and perhaps a few tears.

How wrong I was! The misunderstandings(误解) began at the airport. I was looking for a public telephone to give my American friend Penny a call and tell her that I had arrived. A friendly old man saw me looking lost and asked if he could help me.
“Yes,” I said, “I want to give my friend a ring.”
“Well, that’s nice,” he said. “Are you getting married? But aren’t you a bit(点) young?”
“Who is talking about marriage?” I replied. “I only want to give my friend a ring to tell her I’ve arrived. Can you tell me where there’s a phone box?”

Japanese racehorse and Japanese racing success has increased dramatically. While Japan is enjoying its new success in racing, it was not always or need not always be that way. The idea that effort is greater than outcome extends to horseracing. There is no finer example of this than the near-legendary story of Haru Urara, a horse whose name means “Glorious Spring”, but whose racing career was anything but glorious.
Haru Urara was born in 1996. Her father was NippoTeio, a highly successful racehorse whose wins included Tokyo’s famous horseracing competition of Yasuda Kinen, and whose mother was named Heroine. Her great-great-great grandfather was Canada’s famed Northern Dancer, considered the foundational sire of North American Thoroughbred racehorses.
Her owner NobutoBokulo tried to sell her when she was young and was surprisingly unsuccessful. So, with seemingly wonderful racing bloodlines, he trained her to race.
She started her racing career with a fifth-and last-place finish on Nov.17, 1998 at Kochi Racetrack on the Japanese island of Shikoku. Of course, it is not unusual for a new racehorse to finish poorly in a first outing. What followed, however, was definitely unusual.
An iron horse, Haru Urara raced as often as twice a month over the next four and a half years-and never won a single race. By 2003, her losing record totaled 80 and that is when her story was picked up by media in Japan and eventually around the world. People respected the fact that, while she never won, she ran with all her heart. The “Haru Urara Boom” as it came to be known touched even the most unrelated areas of Japanese life.
1. Why did the owner of Haru Urara decide to train her to race?A.Because Haru Urara showed a talent for racing. |
B.Because Haru Urara possessed outstanding racing bloodlines. |

A.Winning isn’t everything: it’s the only thing. |
B.Don’t depend on your family: depend on yourself. |
C.Those who try hard and then lose still deserve our respect. |

A toddler had been kidnapped in Milpitas, the message read, and it asked that drivers be on the lookout for the boy.
The victim was described as a three-year-old child in plaid shorts and red shoes; the suspect, a man in his 20s wearing jeans and a black hooded sweatshirt. Tim felt his stomach drop when he realized that a man with a toddler in plaid shorts had boarded the bus just ten minutes earlier.
Before alerting authorities, he wanted to confirm their identities. Pulling into a parking lot, he announced that he needed to look for a lost bag. He moved slowly down the aisle, peering under each seat, until he approached the last row. “I saw the red shoes,” says Tim. “But I knew I had to keep cool.”
Back behind the wheel, Tim apologized for the delay and pulled the bus onto the highway. Not wanting to arouse suspicion, he waited a few minutes, then radioed the bus dispatcher, who directed him to continue to his final stop, where police officers would be waiting.
Minutes later, after making the last turn, he stopped the bus and opened the doors. As the man got off the bus with the boy, a police officer grabbed the child out of his arms, threw the suspect to the ground, and handcuffed him behind his back.
The police officers told Tim that the man, David Edington, 23, had snatched the boy from the Milpitas library after he wandered away from his mother. Tim thought about his own sons, ages 17 and 21. “I went back in the bus alone and broke down,” he says. Then he climbed out again to check that the boy was OK. Tim found him sitting calmly in the front seat of a squad car, without a tear in sight. “I just smiled at him,” Tim says. “I knew he was safe.”
Now, Tim is still humble about his actions. “I try to teach my kids to look out for people who can’t defend themselves,” he says. “And that’s what I did.”

Several governments around the world have requested or ordered their citizens to quarantine(隔离)themselves: to stay at home to avoid contact with others so as to slow the spread of diseases like COVID-19. It first appeared in China in late December and quickly became a worldwide health emergency.
Use social media wisely.
For people thriving off social interaction, this practice can be troubling. But Rosmarin, a psychologist from Harvard Medical School, says a lack of physical proximity(接近)shouldn’t mean a lack of socializing. He says phoning friends and staying in touch can allow us to maintain our connections, though he cautions that social media like Twitter doesn’t provide the same benefits and creates distance.
Don’t let the news cycle determine your emotions.
The coronavirus situation is dynamic and seems to change by the hour, resulting in a number of people feeling irresistible to stay on top of updates by constant checking their phones. While that can be stressful at any time, it can affect your ability to relax if you surf news outlets just before going to sleep.
Keep your usual routine.
Routines will go a long way toward helping you avoid feelings of disorganization. Do laundry on Sundays? Keep doing it on Sunday. Not going to work? Get dressed anyway. “Anxiety is just the beginning.” Rosmarin says. “Within a week or two, people are probably going to start feeling depressed, especially when we are distancing from one another. That’s really where the benefits of scheduling come in.”
A.It’s very unlikely that an update will be so urgent or pressing that it would lose relevance by morning. |
B.If you stick to your normal sleep patterns and other practices, you will overcome your helplessness. |
C.Keep a check on your own feelings. |
D.Quarantines, however, can cause health problems and puts people at greater risk of anxiety and depression as a result of the isolation. |
E.It is a good choice to call people you know personally, one-on-one. |
F.You should continue with normal routines as much as possible, which will help you stay healthy. |
G.Doing as usual will also help you adjust when the world returns—as it unavoidably will—to normalcy. |

Slow down and feel in control
For some people, self-care might include doing things they have always wanted to do but never made time for. These things include baking, gardening, and learning a new language or some other new skills.
Mental health self-care
Another form of self-care is making time to meet with a mental health specialist, if needed. The Associated Press reports that online mental health services have increased during the pandemic.
Be kind to yourself-the best type of self-care
Experts remind us that self-care during the pandemic could feel like riding a rollercoaster-up some days, down on others. It can help to have a routine-a usual way of doing things. But experts say we should keep the routine simple.
A.Never feel out of control |
B.For some people, self-care may be simply slowing down |
C.Here are some suggestions on what can be done |

His wife, Gerrie, was still working in the local school cafeteria, but work for Dave was scarce, and the price of everything was rising. The Fusses were at risk of joining the millions of Americans who have lost their homes in recent years. Then Dave and Gerrie received a timely gift-$7, 000, a legacy (遗产) from their neighbors Ish and Arlene Hatch who died in an accident. “It really made a difference when we were going under financially,” says Dave.
But the Fusses weren’t the only folks in Alto and the neighboring town of Lowell to receive unexpected legacy from the Hatches. Dozens of other families were touched by the Hatches’ generosity. In some cases, it was a few thousand dollars; in others, it was more than $100, 000.
It surprised nearly everyone that the Hatches had so much money, more than $3 million-they were an elderly couple who lived in an old house on what was left of the family farm.
Children of the Great Depression, Ish and Arlene were known for their habit of saving. They liked comparison shopping and would routinely go from store to store, checking prices before making a new purchase.
Through the years, the Hatches paid for local children to attend summer camp when their parents couldn’t afford it. “Ish and Arlene never asked if you needed anything.” says their friend Sandy Van Weelden. “They could see things they could do to make you happier, and they would do them.”
Even more extraordinary was that the Hatches had their farmland distributed. It was the Hatches’ wish that their legacy, a legacy of kindness as much as one of dollars and cents, should enrich the whole community and last for generations to come.
