At the age of 80, Mia always felt tired and it had nothing to do with her age, though. 16 years ago, her son, Lucas, died in a plane crash. After a long-time search, the rescuers said there were no survivors and no hope for the victims’ families.
The accident cast a shadow to the whole family. Lucas’s wife Zoe, still looking after their son Mark, had not recovered from his death, and Lucas’s mom Mia missed her son and often felt hopeless about life.
One day at home, when watching the news on TV, Mia and Zoe were suddenly shocked by what they were seeing. A news reporter was talking beside a man who looked like Lucas. He seemed older than he had ever been. The news caused great excitement. “It must be him!” Mia and Zoe exclaimed. “If you recognize this man, please call the number on the screen. Recently, a vague (模糊的) memory of having a plane crash hit this man’s mind. But he still doesn’t remember anything before the crash 16 years ago near the Monolith Islands. Authorities now have reasons to believe that there was a mistake in the previous report that the crash left no survivors...”
When the news ended, Zoe called the number immediately. She told the attendant that she believed the man was her husband Lucas and provided details. Zoe also asked for more information about what had happened over the past 16 years since the accident. The attendant said, “16 years ago, some local fishermen found him who lost his memory. They offered him a job, and he has worked and lived with one of them since then.”
This attendant then told Lucas that his family were waiting for him to go home. Weeks later, Lucas went to the city where Mia and Zoe lived. All the family members were waiting at the airport. Finally, the gates opened, and people were coming out.

Emily was only seven years old when she heard Mommy and Daddy talking about her little brother, Tommy. He was very sick and the doctors told them that only a very costly surgery (手术) could save his life. However, his family could not afford it. Emily heard Daddy say to her tearful mother desperately, “Only a miracle(奇迹) can save him now.”
Emily went to her bedroom and found her piggy bank. She shook all the money out on the floor and counted it carefully. Then she put all the money in her pocket and made her way to a drugstore. She waited patiently for the pharmacist (药剂师) to give her some attention, but he was busy talking to another man. Emily cleared her throat. No good. Then she took out all the coins from her pocket and threw it onto the glass counter. That did it!
“What do you want?” the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice. “Can’t you see I’m talking to my brother?” “Well, I want to talk to you about my brother,” Emily answered back urgently. “He’s really, really sick..., and I want to buy a miracle.” “I beg your pardon?” asked the pharmacist. “His name is Tommy, and he has something bad growing inside of his head. My Daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost? ”
“We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I can’t help you.” the pharmacist said, softening a little.
“Please, I have the money to pay for it.”
The pharmacist’s brother was a well-dressed man. He bent down and asked, “What kind of miracle does your brother need?” “I don’t know,” Emily replied with her eyes welling up. “I just know he’s really sick and Mommy says he needs an operation. But my family doesn’t have enough money, so I have brought all my money. I love my little brother.” “How much do you have?” asked the well-dressed man. “A dollar and fifteen cents,” Emily answered barely audibly (可听见地). “And that’s all the money I have!”

In the spring sun, my aunt and I headed for her flower shop. Normally I would be delighted to help in her shop, but not recently because of Rosa. Rosa was my sister, just one month old, who was settled in my old bedroom. For ten years, the small room was full of my toys and books. But now it was transformed into her baby room, decorated like a garden with pinks and yellows. My space, my old life, was gone.
“Here we are!” We arrived at the shop, a wave of colour and sweet smell washing over me. My aunt said I could pick some flowers for Mum and Dad. I used to love this, but today I was so overcome with tiredness and envy. Why bother to bring them flowers when they were enjoying Rosa at home without me?
Silently I helped my aunt arrange flowers. “Your mum told me there hasn’t been much shut eye recently for any of you.” “Not much, since Rosa the alarm clock was installed (安装).” I complained with a huge yawn (哈欠).
“I remember having to creep (蹑手蹑脚地走) around like a worn-out mouse when your mum was a baby. I spent the first months hating her so much.” “But you and Mum seem so close,” I said, guiltily hiding away my envy of Rosa.
“Now we are. But it took me years to grow into the role of big sister. Few flowers blossom (绽放) overnight, you know.” She pulled me in for aside hug, glancing up at the clock, and suggested I take a walk outside.
Behind her shop was a field dotted with spring flowers. Stepping into the field, I began to pick little flowers. It was like gathering my childhood memories. I remembered how I’d sit with Dad, making flower chains, crowning (授予) each other with the silliest titles: Queen of Junk Food and King of Mess. My smile grew wider. The shining yellow flowers reminded me of the color in Rosa’s baby room. Was she awake? I wondered.

When Marco was a boy, he tried everything to get his father’s love and attention. He worked hard to earn excellent marks; he tried to be obedient (顺从的), he chose inspiring friends and always tried to behave well.
Sensitive and shy, he always wore turtleneck shirts. He hid behind his hair, which he wore long around his face and ears. To make it worse, Marco was naturally shorter than the other kids. And because his good marks had allowed him to skip second grade — he was younger than everyone else. This added nothing to his already low self-confidence.
When Marco was eight his parents divorced, and Marco was sent to a boarding school. Six years later, he and his young sister Sandra moved in with their dad and his new wife in St-Léonard, a French Canadian and Italian neighbourhood on the east side of Montreal. Between his work and his new young wife, it felt to Marco that his father had little time for him and Sandra. Except for his demands around housework after school, there was no communication. It seemed to Marco the only time his dad ever spoke to him was to be demanding or critical. But his dad really did love him and wanted the best for him. It was his own insecurity that made him react to anything that might threaten his son’s future.
Marco sank further into his low self-respect and was overwhelmed with feeling unappreciated, inadequate, depressed and confused. He felt desperately alone and lonely. He began to fear coming home from school every day.
One day, his aunt called him. To Marco, this seemed like a miracle. Aunt Ginette usually only called once a year, on his birthday. She said she had just seen some young teenagers participate in a public speaking contest called Gala Personnalité sponsored by Club Optimiste — and she thought about him. She thought he should give it a try. She told him she firmly believed he could perform on stage like the other kids, since she had seen him do skits (小品) for the family at Christmas.

Unfortunately, 81-year-old Barney had lost two most beloved people of his life, his wife, and his only daughter, who left her 6-year-old son Tommy in his hands.
Tommy was a bright, talented young boy with a promising future ahead of him. But with insufficient resources, he knew it would be hard to provide Tommy with the way he deserved and dreamed. Barney applied for a job as a pizza deliveryman. It was exhausting, because Barney had to go up and down to different addresses on hot, cold, and rainy days, door-delivering pizzas to customers. Hard though the job was, the pay was not that great.
However, Barney was fueled by the thought that every box of pizza he delivered was money and one step closer to giving his grandson a better life. With the thought of his grandson’s future in his mind, Barney drove to the address that winter morning.
The cold winter air froze everything on its path. With a deep sense of relief, Barney finally arrived at the address. His heart raced at seeing the angry client, a teenage boy named Fabian, on the doorstep.
“What took you so long?” Fabian screamed. Barney observed the teen’s anger and realized he wouldn’t get any tips. However, he was fortunate enough that he was at least able to deliver the pizzas to the client.
Just as Barney made his way up the stairs with the pizza boxes, he fell down on the concrete, hurting his leg. And the 15 boxes of pizza he was holding went everywhere on the ground.
“How did they hire an old man like you? Clean up the mess and get out!” Fabian made fun of Barney as he struggled to rise on his feet. To make things worse, Fabian’s friends ganged up cruelly laughing at poor Barney. Barney realized he had broken his leg due to the severe fall. Fabian’s angry words kept ringing in Barney’s head as he lay helpless and painful on the icy ground, crying.
Suddenly, the boy saw his friends running away in different directions. Fabian froze still when he recognized it was his dad, Albert. The gentleman was beyond shocked as his son would throw a party at home when he was supposed to be preparing for his exams.

It seemed to be a very large amount of money for her. For a day or two, she walked around in a dreamy state as she thought about her choices. Her daughter Janie was wearing worn shoes and needed new ones. And she would buy new shirts for the boys. Her daughter Mag should have another dress. And still there would be enough left for new stockings for her children. The idea about how to spend the dollars made her restless with excitement.
On the day she planned to go shopping with the money and shopping note, she ate a light meal ---no! Between getting the children fed and the house cleaned, and preparing herself to go shopping, she forgot to eat at all.
When she arrived at the large department store, she spotted a pile of silk stockings at the entrance. A sign nearby announced that they had been reduced in price. A young girl behind the counter asked her if she wished to examine the silky leg coverings. She smiled as if she had been asked to inspect diamond jewelry, and started to feel the soft, expensive items. Missus Sommers picked up a black pair and looked at them closely. Excitement suddenly showed on her pale face. She looked up at the shop girl and said proudly, “Well, I will buy this pair. ”
Missus Sommers changed her cotton stockings for the new silk ones in the ladies’ rest area. She had let herself be controlled by some machine-like force that directed her actions and freed her of responsibility.
How good was the touch of the silk on her skin! Then she put her shoes back on and put her old stockings into her bag. Next, she went to the shoe department, where she tried on a new pair of boots. Her feet and ankles looked lovely. She could not believe that they were a part of herself.

I have taught Spanish to thousands of students over my 36 years at Walpole High School in Walpole, Massachusetts. My students have ranged from the most academically gifted to the academically at-risk. There is one young man, however, who in the course of his high school career surpassed everyone’s expectations. His name is Vincent Lee.
Vincent entered my classroom as a nervous freshman on his first day of high school. He was enrolled in our Spanish course, a transition course for students who underperformed in Spanish I. In fact, Vincent had not had a lot of success in Spanish in middle school. His eighth grade teacher had described him as that “sad, introverted (内向的) boy in the last row who always kept his head down.”
Vincent often went to class unprepared and couldn’t see the point of learning another language. And yet there were other reasons to explain this lack of motivation. Vincent was dealing with a lot of turmoil (混乱) in his life: the recent divorce of his parents, moving from a house to an apartment and much greater responsibility at home for helping his mom take care of his younger twin brothers.
From the very start of my course, I sensed an attitude that separated Vincent from his peers. He entered class each day, took his seat quietly and took out what he needed for the lesson. At first, he was somewhat shy about answering questions in Spanish, but as the course progressed, I was able to engage him in conversations about his family, his interests and his passions.
With time going by, Vincent became more willing to volunteer and even ask me questions. He seemed fascinated by the fact that my parents were from Costa Rica and that I was fluent in both English and Spanish. When he once asked how long it takes to become fluent in another language, I explained that it takes many years and that the first sign that a person has adopted the language as his own is when one dreams in that language.
