What it does
The self-cleaning door handle is combining with advanced photocatalytic(光催化) and blacklight technology. A light source activates the door’s handle coating, telling it to start cleaning. It can reduce the risk of infection by contact and improve the cleanliness of a space.
How it works
The working principle of the product is that a thin advanced photocatalytic coating can effectively remove bacteria(细菌) on the surface of a substance.A consistent UV light source inside a transparent glass door handle is required to activate the door’s handle coating on the outer surface for disinfection, so a generator is used to provide electricity to light up a UV LED lamp by the motion of an opening and closing door. Then, the door handle can clean by itself.
Design process
We made the first version by using stainless steel(不锈钢).However, it caused the door handle to be heavier. Then, we tried aluminum (铝), which made it light and easy to fix. We also improved the generator output which effectively turned energy from door movement into a light source.
How it is different
Our innovative(革新的) design is simple, effective, and attracive. It has an elegant smooth shape, and its minimalist appearance stands out in today’s world of inventions. Nowadays, people use chemical cleaning materials to clean up public areas but it harms the human body. Our design can be used for a long time and is effective. It can self-clean after each use. In the door lock and door handle market, it is a unique design because there are no similar products.
Future plans
In the future, we will commercialize the product and hope that it can compete on the market with similar products. We are going to connect with public properties, for example, shopping malls, hotels, hospitals and public restrooms, where the risk of spreading infection is higher.

Michael Graham Richard showed the family of robots doing all kinds of things a few years ago, but this new video that starts off with two Atlas robots is just amazing. It's designed to assist emergency rescue (紧急救援) workers in search-and-rescue operations, performing tasks such as shutting off gas, opening doors, and operating powered equipment in environments where humans cannot survive.
But Atlas has never really been out of the lab. In fact, very few of Boston Dynamics robots have been used for work. But after they were bought by Japanese investor Softbank in 2017, they had to go out and get a real job, and Spot, who also dances in the video is the first commercial offering. There are about 400 of them out in the field now. You can buy one for $75,000 and use it as a platform for many different functions (功能), from checking for gas leaks to working for bomb groups, although that did not work out too well. But with that robotic arm option, it looks like it might be able to bring you coffee.
The last robot to join the dance party was Handle, which looked less impressive because of its use of wheels instead of legs. Now that it has been sold to a real manufacturing company, we can probably expect Hyundai to pay off the money to make real working, instead of dancing robots.
1. Why are Atlas robots amazing?A.They can protect the environment. | B.They can do dangerous work. |
C.They can walk into factories. | D.They can dance very well. |
A.It just exists in the video. | B.It is developed by Softbank. |
C.It is the first one to go into market. | D.Its single function makes it less attractive. |
A.It has two flat feet. | B.It moves by wheels. |
C.It can't bring you coffee. | D.It assists emergency rescue. |
A.Develop new robots. | B.Pay off Hyundai's debts. |

Worldwide the numbers are similarly bad, with just 9% of plastic being recycled. The statistics (统计数字) are even worse for certain types of plastic. For example, out of 80,000 tons of polystyrene (聚苯乙烯) containers produced in the United States, only a small amount (less than 5,000 tons) was recycled.
Now, researchers at The University of Queensland have found a species of worm with a taste for polystyrene could be the key to plastic recycling. The superworm can eat through polystyrene, thanks to a bacterial enzyme in their gut. To study how superworms react to purely plastic food, researchers broke up 135 of the creatures into three teams: one was fed only wheat bran, another was fed only plastics, and the third was given nothing.
“We found the bran-fed worms have been significantly healthier than the plastic-fed or hungry worms, more than doubling their weight over the three weeks they have been observed. Though the plastic-fed worms made less impressive gains, they still put on more weight than the hungry worms,” Dr. Rinke said. “This suggests the worms can get energy from plastics, most likely with the help of their gut microbes (微生物).”
Researchers used a technique called metagenomics to find several encoded enzymes with the ability to reduce polystyrene. The long-term goal is to engineer enzymes to reduce plastic waste in recycling plants.
“Superworms are like mini recycling plants, eating the polystyrene and then feeding it to the bacteria in their gut,” Dr. Rinke said. It’s hoped this bio-upcycling will promote plastic waste recycling and reduce landfills. Researchers said they aim to grow the gut bacteria in the lab and further test its ability to reduce polystyrene. Then they can look into how to improve this process to a level required for an entire recycling plant.
1. What problem do the statistics in paragraph 1 indicate?A.Landfills are poorly managed. |
B.Plastics are recycled at a very low rate. |
C.Many plastic containers are of poor quality. |
D.It takes a long time for plastic waste to break up. |
A.By collecting data. | B.By making a comparison. |
C.By introducing a concept. | D.By referring to a previous study. |
A.Plastic-fed worms had a decline in weight. |
B.Superworms showed little interest in wheat bran. |
C.Superworms could survive on only eating polystyrene. |
D.Bran-fed worms had a longer lifespan than plastic-fed worms. |
A.Conduct experiments on other worm species. |
B.Improve gut bacteria’s ability to reduce plastics. |
C.Apply the bio-upcycling technology to recycling plants. |
D.Raise superworms in a big way to solve plastic pollution. |

It was voice-activated home assistant powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Alexa comes with the Amazon Echo device. And it made Brooke’s wishes come true. A few days later, much to her parents surprise, a $170 dollhouse and four pounds of cookies showed up.
Alexa is not the only AI willing to order up treats for you. Apple HomePod has Siri, Google Home has its Assistant, and the upcoming Galaxy Home device will have Bixby. People who own these devices use them mainly for listening to music, checking the weather, and setting timers. According to a report, voice shopping is rare. People who do it mainly order simple things like paper towels. But many experts predict a boom in voice shopping in the near future.
But voice shopping has its downsides. Unwanted dollhouses aren’t the biggest problem. It’s usually very easy to cancel an order or return items. The thing that creeps some people out is that these assistants are always listening. They have to be able to respond when you want them. So they listen to for “Alexa” or “OK Google” or another command. When they hear it, they start recording the conversation. Some have worried about what happens to these recordings. Should companies be allowed to use them to learn about people’s shopping habits? Should police access them to solve a crime? What if someone hacks the device?
What do you think? Are you ready to start voice shopping?
