We all show more interest in watching new, unknown sports during the Olympics. Curling, trampolining...and there might be one more—cheer-leading, competitive or All-Star cheer-leading to be exact.
I am certain that you will love it: Teams of up to 35 cheerleaders, working together like a well-oiled machine, carry out challenging body movements during an exciting two-and-a-half-minute routine. Watching these highly-skilled young girls producing an imaginative routine live in the arena is exciting, and slightly terrifying, isn’t it? Absolutely. How about slow-motion replays of remarkable movements on the small screen? Yes, please. You will never be disappointed to view them.
Some people argue that high risk is the sport’s major problem, but in fact, many Olympic events are also dangerous. It is not uncommon for a flyer (the athlete thrown into the air) to fall during cheer-leading. But don’t worry—one of the first things they are taught is how to fall and catch in the safest way possible.
Cheer-leading will not be a one-horse race. Since the sport originated in North America, it’s natural that the first Olympic medals would be contested in its “homeland” (in Los Angeles, USA, 2028). But there are many countries that will happily challenge Team USA for the medal. Team England has historically been a strong competitor. They have earned medals at the last three World Championships. And other powerful cheer nations such as Canada, Finland and China have presented performances at the top level. In 2019, it was allowed to apply to become part of the Olympic Games sports program. Now the International Cheer Union has more than 100 national organizations and almost 4.5 million athletes. The widespread international participation has made it easier for the sport to take the next steps towards a place at the Summer Games. So Los Angeles 2028 is not beyond the bounds of possibility.

As I watched what my son was experiencing, I recalled the events earlier in the day—packing up everything in a box and saying goodbye to my colleagues. During the drive home, I kept telling myself that I will find work again—I am confident in my experience and abilities, but self-doubt was still sticking its foot in the door.
The game entered the fourth quarter with Nathan’s team still trailing. I saw the determination on his back to not only tie the game, but then go ahead by three points. Then, a player from the other team made an unbelievable shot to tie the game up again. With a tie game and seconds on the clock, Nathan found himself with the ball and with skill and confidence, he made the basket with a defender hanging all over him. The other player was called for a foul(犯规).
As Nathan stood preparing for a shot that would put his team up by three points, I saw the focus and determination on his face, with no room for self-doubt. After he made the free throw, his team managed to stop the other team from scoring, winning the game and moving on to the finals.
As I sat there, my heart bursting with pride, it dawned on me. I had taught him perseverance(毅力) in the face of adversity, and he had just taught me the same lesson. That brief moment of self-doubt and feeling sorry for myself was blown away by the actions of my son on the basketball court. He will play in the finals, but it doesn’t matter if he wins or loses. At this moment, we both won.

Some people say that parents are purposely taking in their kids by lying to them about Santa. Is it purposely cheating or playing along with the fantasy? There are always those stories about the kindergarten teacher or parent who would tell the kids there’s no Santa Claus, and they’d all start crying on the lost dreams. But if another teacher goes into a third-grade class and says there is a Santa Claus, they’ll all laugh at her. What I say is that if they’re at the age when they’re still believing, why bother to end it?
Then how long should parents pretend? Studies indicate that after eight, 75 percent of kids don’t believe. That’s the first “S” word that parents have to deal with — it’s not sex. It’s Santa. So the parent has to sit down and say it in a gentle way. “Listen, Santa did exist. He was a person who gave to others and now that you’re older, you can give to others and be Santa, too.” Do you think if a kid who believes in Santa walks into a third-or-fourth-grade class, his friends are going to tell him in a gentle way? No. They’re going to make fun of him, and the kid is going to run home crying, saying you lied to him. We all remember how the news is broken to us, so if we all remember, then there’s some significance or we would have forgotten it. And it’s better to have a memory if someone doing it nicely than some kids laughing at you.
Santa is also used as an instrument of guilt, because Santa knows everything. So even if the kids did bad things and got away with them, Santa knew. Still, Santa alone is not a good behavioral tool. You can’t, say, in January, play the Santa card to your child — because Christmas is too far away.
1. According to the first paragraph, parents should__________.A.telling the kids that Santa does not exist |
B.lie to their children on the problem of Santa Claus |
C.not tell the truth if their children believe Santa Claus exists |

A.He tells a lie that he believes in Santa. | B.He says Santa does exist in this world. |

I know lots of women who skip breakfast, and they have a ton of different excuses for doing it. Some say they don’t have time. others think they’re “saving” calories, still others just don’t like breakfast food .
But the bottom line is that eating in the morning is very important when you’re trying to lose weight. “Eating just about anything from 300 to 400 calories would be better than nothing at all,” says Katherine Brooking, R., D., who developed the super-easy eating plan for this year’s “SELF CHALLENGE”. And even pizza can be healthy if it’s loaded with vegetables, and you stick to one small piece.
Breakfast is one meal I never miss, and the same goes for most weight loss success stories. Research shows that eating breakfast keeps you from overeating later in the day. Researchers at the University of Southern California found that breakfast skippers have a bigger chance of gaining weight than those who regularly have a morning meal.
So eat something in the morning, anything. I know plenty of friends who end up having no breakfast at all, and have just coffee or orange juice. I say, try heating up last night’s leftovers---it may sound crazy, but if it works for you, do it! I find if I tell myself, “You can always eat it tomorrow,” I put away the leftovers instead of eating more that night. Try it…you may save yourself some pre-bedtime calories. And watch your body gain the fat-burning effects.
1. What can we infer from the text?A.Working women usually have breakfast in a hurry. |
B.Many people have wrong ideas about breakfast. |
C.There are some easy ways of cooking a meal. |
D.Eating vegetables helps save energy. |
A.eat something for breakfast | B.be careful about what you eat |
C.heat up food before eating it | D.eat calorie-controlled food |
A.who go to work early | B.who stay up late |
C.who want to lose weight | D.who eat before sleep |
【推荐3】Some people claim they “never forget a face.” But what does that saying mean? Is there really no limit to the number of faces a person can remember?
A new study has found that, on average, people can remember as many as 5,000 faces.
That number comes from a group of researchers at the University of York in England. They published their findings on facial recognition this month in the Proceedings of The Royal Society B, Biological Sciences.
There have been many studies recently on facial recognition technology. But the authors of this study say theirs is the first time that scientists have been able to put a number to the abilities of humans to recognize faces.
Facial recognition technology is used to screen people before they visit the Statue of Liberty in New York, US. Jenkins said the ability to tell individual people apart is “clearly important.”
Scientists have been working on computer technology to remember and identify faces since the 1960s. Today, facial recognition technology is used in many ways, including by law enforcement agencies to prevent crime and violence. Governments use it to keep secret areas secure and, in extreme cases, control populations. Some governments use the software to watch people and find out where they go and what they do.
People who took part in the study were also shown thousands of photographs of famous people. Researchers asked them which ones they recognized. To make sure they knew these people, researchers required them to recognize two different photos of each famous person. The results showed that the participants knew between 1,000 and 10,000 faces.
Jenkins said one explanation may be that some people have a natural ability for remembering faces. “There are differences in how much attention people pay to faces and how well they process the information.” he said.
Jenkins also said it could be because of different social environments. Some people may have grown up in more populated places. So, they may have had more social contact throughout their lives.
