Body Language Examples

Learning to read body language, and learning to express ourselves through our own body language, can help improve communication. The following body language examples are common. It’s usually easy to recognize their meaning once you’ve learned them.

Putting Your Head In Your Hands

When you put your head in your hands,     1    , as if you’re so tired of life that you just can’t hold your head up anymore. Or, it can mean that you’re upset or so ashamed you don’t want to show your face.

Eye Contact

You need to make eye contact with the person you’re talking to if you want them to feel comfortable with the conversation and accept what you have to say. Scientists suggest that most people are comfortable with eye contact of about 3.2 seconds at a time if you’re a stranger.     2    .

Looking Down

Looking at the floor or ground makes you appear weak and unconfident. Unless there’s something you need to discuss down there, you need to keep your eyes on the level of the other person’s face.     3    .

Placing Your Hand On Your Cheek

When you touch your cheek with your hand, you show that you’re thinking and carefully evaluating the information you’re receiving. When you see someone do this while you’re talking to them,     4    .

Rubbing Your Eye

When you rub your eye,     5    . If someone is rubbing their eye as you speak, you might benefit from stopping and asking for their feedback (回馈) so that you can address their doubts.

Learning body language examples is a great first step to sending the right body language messages. It also helps you read the unspoken messages and nonverbal signals that others are sending to you.

B.When you break eye contact, as you should every few seconds, try looking to the side

【推荐1】Nonverbal communication is a broad term used to describe any method of conveying information without words. Whether intentional, based on societal cues (提示), or completely unconscious, common forms of nonverbal communication include body language and facial cues, fashion and personal clothing, hand gestures, as well as graphical signs and design.

It is important to note that nonverbal communication is really about a lack of words, rather than a lack of speech sounds. That means writing would be considered verbal communication while sounds like grunts (嘟哝) would not.

Nonverbal communication can be broadly divided into relatively universal forms and culturally dependent forms. Many facial expressions, for example, are relatively universal, with most cultures able to identify expressions of fear, joy, or anger. On the other hand, nonverbal cues like bowing, shaking hands,or flashing a peace sign are culturally characteristic, and therefore have little meaning outside of cultures that understand them.

Fashion is a form of nonverbal communication, and in many modern cultures is a hugely important way in which people telegraph things about themselves.

Gestures also act as a form of nonverbal communication. A wide range of hand gestures can be found in most cultures, and in the west there are some almost universal gestures, such as a wave goodbye, a thumbs-up to show everything is okay, or handy outspread to signify offerings.

Body language is one of the most studied forms of nonverbal communication, and deals with how the body rests, how it is situated in relation to other bodies, and the special distance between bodies. For example, turning towards a person when seated and speaking to them is a nonverbal cue showing interest, while turning away shows a lack of interest. Tipping your head slightly is a form of nonverbal communication to show curiosity or express that you are listening closely or what they are saying, while constantly looking away would show a lack of attention.

A new study says the warm feeling in a hug is more than just skin deep . Researchers from the University of California , Berkeley believe that this loving feeling could have anti-aging benefits .
Oxytocin , sometimes referred to as the “ love hormone(荷尔蒙)” or the “ trust hormone , ” is responsible for those indescribable feelings we get when we’re bonding with a lover or a loved one .
Levels of the hormone drop as we age , and evidence suggests that could be a contributing factor to the deterioration of our bodies as we age . Muscle loss in particular is one of the major side effects of aging , with our bodies losing up to 5 percent of our muscle mass each decade past our 30s .
In the study , published in the journal Nature Communications , researchers injected oxytocin into older mice with muscle damage . The older mice had lower levels of the homeone than younger mice initially . But after nine days , the older mice who were given the hormone healed better than those who did not . In fact , their ability to repair muscle damage was up to 80 percent that of the younger mice .
The results were not only fast-acting , but provide hope for future uses of the hormone in a variety of anti-aging capacities . “ This is good because it demonstrates that extra oxytocin improves aged tissue stem cells(组织干细胞)without making muscle stem cells divide uncontrollably , ” study co-author Wendy Cousins said in a statement .
Previous uses of anti-aging molecules have also been associated with higher cancer risk , but researchers are hopeful that oxytocin can be useful in humans without this risk . In the future , researchers of Berkeley say oxytocin could be used to fight other age-related health issues by improving bone health and even being used as an alternative to hormone replacement therapy .
Now go out and give someone a hug .
1. According to the passage , oxytocin __________ .

D.can be used in humans without any risk
2. The underlined word “ deterioration ” in Paragraph 4 probably refers to the state of __________ .
A.getting fatterB.becoming worse or less
C.growing strongerD.dividing uncontrollably
3. What can be learned from the research ?
A.All the older mice healed faster in the research .
B.Older mice healed better than younger ones after 9 days .
C.Extra oxytocin in older mice controlled muscle cell division .
D.Mice with oxytocin injection improved the ability to repair muscle damage .
4. What can be a suitable title for the passage ?
A.When Do We Need A Hug ?
B.A New Anti-aging Product

【推荐3】Nail biting and hair pulling are two forms of body language. Both nail biting and hair pulling can be either conscious or subconscious body language gestures, each showing some interesting aspects of the character, emotion and inner working of the individual.

Nail biting is a non-verbal gesture. In adults it’s often a habit adopted and carried through from childhood and can become apparent in stressful situations throughout adulthood. To most people, nail biting is associated with nervousness and shyness and is an involuntary response to certain social situations. In many cases, it’s an adaptor behaviour that channels nervous energy, inactivity or boredom and doesn’t disturb normal functioning. In severe cases nail biting can become a repetitive behaviour that is intentionally performed. It can result in great physical damage.

So when we look deeper, in both adults and children, it has been suggested that severe nail biting is often referred to as a method of “self-heating”. This indicates that nail biting is a subconscious behaviour indicating increased anxiety and low self-confidence.

Hair pulling can indicate a number of emotions and behaviors. For example, children who bite their nails or frequently pull their hair may be nervous or have low self-confidence. Hair pulling may be a comforting action for a child who is tense and anxious, and may become habitual later in life in stressful situations. Routine and severe hair pulling can be a compulsive disorder that may be linked to genetics, anxiety and depression. It’s most commonly thought to be a stress-related condition.

However, hair puling is also another non-verbal body language that can signify different things in different situations. For example, in some situations, it can mean interest and desire. However, in other situations, it can suggest anxiety, incompetence, uncertainty or shyness.

A.may take no interest in somethingB.may feel quite sure of themselves
