A man came home from work late, tired and unhappy, to find his 5—year—old son waiting for him at the door. How the boy wished to have fun with his father at home even for a short time.
“Daddy, may I ask you a question?”
“Yeah sure. what is it?” replied the man.
“Daddy, how much do you make an hour?”
“That’s none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?” the man said angrily.
“I just want to know. Please tell me. How much do you make an hour?” pleaded the little boy.
“If you must know, I make $20 an hour.”
“Oh,” the little boy replied with the head down.
Looking up, he said. “Daddy, may I please borrow $10?
The father was angry. “If the only reason you asked that is that you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I work hard every day for such childish behavior.”
The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy’s questions. “How dare he ask such questions only to get some money?” he thought to himself.
After about an hour or so, the man calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10 and he really didn’t ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy’s room and opened the door. “Are you asleep, son?” he asked.
“No, daddy, I’m awake.” replied the boy.
I’ve been thinking. maybe I was too hard on you earlier,” said the man. “It has been a long day and I took out my anger on you. Here’s the $10 you asked for.”
The little boy sat straight up, smiling. “Oh. Thank you, daddy!” he shouted. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled(皱巴巴的)bills.

When Anna thought she finally knew what life was all about, it dealt her a heavy blow. Her husband passed away suddenly. They had been making plans to get away on a dream trip to France. Now it was too late, and Anna wept over all the memories they wouldn’t be sharing. She was heartbroken.
“I’m so worried about Mom,” Anna’s daughter Clara said to her son, Ron, one day. “It’s been over six months, and she’s still sad. She won’t leave the house, not for anything.”
Ron, a fourteen-year-old boy who had been close to his grandparents, was upset. “Poor grandma!” he sighed. He knew his grandpa was her world. Ron wondered how he could cheer his grandma up. “What if I start taking her out in the afternoon for walks the way she and Grandpa used to do?” he asked. “That’s a great idea, Ron!” his mother said.
So the next day, Ron showed up at his grandma’s house an hour before sunset. “Hey, grandma,” he said. “How about walking down to the lake and watching the sunset?” Anna turned her face away so her grandson couldn’t see her tears and said. “Why would I want to do a stupid thing like that? Don’t bother me!”
Ron was hurt by his grandmother’s words, but what he didn’t know was that Anna was just as upset. “Why did I say that to the poor boy?” she asked herself. “He was only trying to help.”
That night Ron told his mom what had happened. “Maybe she doesn’t want our help,” he said sadly. Clara replied, “She definitely needs it. Your grandpa would hope she could continue to love life. He once always brought her red roses and she loved them very much!”
That was when a brilliant idea struck Ron. He decided to buy his grandma roses like his grandpa used to do. Maybe the daily reminder that she was loved would turn things around. But first, he needed to earn money to buy roses, which weren’t cheap. Ron decided that he wasn’t going to say a word to his mom. He was going to do this for his grandmother, all by himself.

“Jordi! Wake up!” Dad’s voice calls from the hallway, and I sit up quickly. Today is the day! The day that I will finally be a casteller —a castle builder.
My city is hosting today’s competition. Never before have I been part of the tower. It is so high. And it sometimes falls. I was hesitant to be up there. Today, for the first time in a competition, I will help build the tower !
In town, I see that the center of the square is already packed with people. While I wait for our turn to compete, my friend Tomeu comes to stand with me.“What if I’m not ready for this, Tomeu?” I ask. Tomeu’s dark eyes sparkle as he smiles at me. “We are never ready, Jordi. None of us who compete knows for sure how it will go.” He gestures toward the tower going up in front of us. “Just like these people, you must have faith in the others. You must trust those below who lift you up, and you must trust yourself.” Tomeu pats me on the shoulder. “Have focus. Have faith.”
I nod to show that I understand. I will do my best to follow his suggestions. Soon, too soon,it is our turn.
Dad and several strongest men make the base for our tower. Four smaller men create a strong second level. Our tower is growing taller and taller. I watch as Mom climbs nimbly(敏捷地)up. She and my aunt form the fifth level.
“Then suddenly it is my turn. Tomeu and I will make up the sixth level. Each of the castellers wears a waist belt, and I grip the belts with my bare toes as I climb up. I pass the first two levels without difficulty, but as I go higher, the tower feels less steady. By the time I reach the fifth level, nerves make my hands sweat and my knees tremble, for I am very high off the ground.

Rick, a ten-year-old boy, was constantly angry at everything around him. He always fought in school with the other kids. Once he had an outburst in school. Upset by something a classmate said to him, he pushed the boy, and a fight happened. When the teacher stepped in to break it up, Rick went crazy, throwing papers and books around the classroom and rushing out. His teachers couldn’t say anything that would comfort the kid. And the parents of his schoolmates were getting concerned. Rick was earning quite the reputation. After talking with school officials, Rick’s mom tried everything she could to calm Rick down.
She tried different methods until one day she came home with a canvas (画布) and paint. “What’s this?”, Rick asked. Rick’s mom handed over the painting equipment and said, “Whenever you feel angry, paint whatever you’re angry about instead of bursting out.” Rick wasn’t that happy about it but he gave it a try anyway. Over the next few weeks, the young boy created several artworks. They mostly showed disturbing images though. So his mom took all of the paintings and called Rick over so that they could talk about them. “Tell me, Rick. What are these paintings about?”
“Well, the first painting is about how some of the kids show off their new clothes and pencil cases. The next painting is about my teacher who keeps telling me about how I’m doing things wrong. And the last painting is about how one of my schoolmate’s father suggested that I change my attitude. All of them make me so angry.” Rick’s mom, in a calm voice, took Rick by her side and told him: “Don’t you see it, Rick?” “See what?” Rick asked. “You’re so angry at all of these things but not once did you try to understand why you’re getting so angry. What have all these people done to you, really?”

Phil Radcliffe opened the door, looked down, and found a small boy of about 10, head down and face hidden, nose sniffling(抽鼻子), obviously in some unhappiness.
Phil and his wife Molly lived in this neighbourhood for almost three decades. The families here all knew and trusted one another. Youngsters bounced from home to home looking for friends and entertainment. In the school holidays, Molly and Phil had been known to take children at a time to the local cinema to give some of the parents a break.
Having taken him to the living room and had him seated, Phil asked the boy, “Philip, what’s happened?”
The boy seemed genuinely upset by the inquiry. “Sorry, Mr. Radcliffe,” he sobbed, “My dad’s just left home. He’s not going to live with us anymore. Mum’s crying. It’s made me cry. I don’t think I’m going to see him again.”
Phil sat down next to him and put a comforting arm around his shoulders, trying to reassure the youngster, “I’m sure that you’ll see your father again very soon, Philip. You’re a lovely boy and he’ll want to see you a lot. And your teachers will understand if sometimes you’re a bit sad.”
The boy wiped away his tears with the back of a hand.
“Let me get something for us,” Phil suggested. He went into the kitchen, and then returned with an orange juice for the boy, a coffee for himself and a selection of biscuits for them. However upset he might have been, young Philip was obviously happy with the drink and concentrated on the chocolate samples among the biscuits.
Once the boy seemed more settled, Phil proposed, “Perhaps you should call your mum and tell her where you are, so that she doesn’t worry.”
“It’s OK, Mr. Radcliffe,” he insisted. “I’ll go home in a few minutes. But I like talking to you.”
“You can stay as long as you want, Philip. I just don’t want your mother to think that she’s lost you.”
