Emily White came to the world 17 years ago, with so many birth problems in her body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive long. She did make it but with her strange body figure, everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.

In her hometown, a yearly outdoor performance was held in the school auditorium (礼堂). It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the town’s people.

Many people tried out each year for it, but so many were turned away. It can only include the most excellent people in the field.

Emily had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to Mrs. Owens-her music teacher-to ask to join in the performance. Without letting her sing, Mrs. Owens took a glance at Emily’s body and said, “Child, you are just not suitable. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too.”

Without singing a single note, Emily was sent back through the door of the choral (合唱的) room. Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Owens then retired.

This year, there came a new music teacher, Mr. Butler. He heard about Emily and suggested that she have a try.

Emily didn’t want to be rejected again, so she hesitated about it. As Emily struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr. Butler called, “Emily, you’re next.” Kind of nervous as she was, Emily did as Mr. Butler told her to. Mr. Butler sat by the piano to keep Emily company. When Emily finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr. Butler and knew the result would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.

Emily couldn’t sleep that night. She tossed and turned in bed one thousand times.

She was suffering from the feelings that she didn’t fit and the great need to be accepted.

By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain due to stress.

It seemed to take forever, but I finally turned thirteen last Saturday. I decided to hang around my room and junk a bunch of kid stuff. As I sorted out the drawers, a photo fell to the floor. The face staring up at me was my friend, Jane.

Jane Farmer was the smartest girl I’d ever known. She almost always got straight A’s, and she was pretty, too. Part of me wanted to hate her, but I couldn’t. She was too nice, instead. I envied her and longed with all my heart to be just like her.

Jane was a top student and always sat in front of the class. My desk was in the back. I’d watch Mrs Schnell, our teacher, pace back and forth in front of us. She as short with thick red hair and a smile she turned on and off like a water tap.

I always slumped (弯垂) way down in my desk, desperately hoping to hide myself. I was terrified that the next name I heard would be my own. Sometimes my heart pounded so loudly that I was sure her ears would find me even if her sharp eyes didn’t.

Each time she called out a name, the victim would have to rise, stand straight as a broomstick, shoulders squared, and read to the entire class. More than anything, I hated to stand and read aloud to the class. Unlike me, Jane rarely made a mistake. And if she did, she was never made to feel ashamed. Mrs. Schnell would flash a pleasant smile and patiently guide her toward the correct answer. I wasn’t good at reading and could tell that Mrs. Schnell was often not at all pleased with me.

One day after soccer practice, Jane and I were standing together waiting for our mothers. We weren’t friends yet. I wanted to ask her if she liked movies, but I changed my mind when I looked at her face. She seemed to feel my eyes “What are you looking at?” She asked. “You,” I said. “Why?” she asked. “Because you seemed so sad,” I said.

Para 1:

“I got B+ on the history test,” She said, sounding like she couldn’t accept it.

She looked at me for a moment, maybe deciding if she could trust me.

My best friend Lisa and I carefully wrote our words with a No. 2 pencil. We took turns writing down the sentences. "Dear Miss Hanley," we wrote, "you like Kathleen better than you like us. That isn't fair."

Miss Hanley was our fourth-grade teacher. She was in her 20s, with short, dark, curly hair and lively grey eyes. It was her first-year teaching in our public school in the northeast Bronx. "You're a very talented writer," Miss Hanley often told me. This excited me. A few weeks into this school year, Lisa and I had co-authored a play based on our favorite novel, Little Women. And we performed the play in front of the class. When the curtain came down, the applause from the students was light. But Miss Hanley clapped strongly, saying, "Great! Great!" Lisa and I ignored the other kids, and were high on her praise for days.

I didn't envy Lisa's relationship with Miss Hanley. Sharing Miss Hanley was a bond between us. In Miss Hanley's class, we behaved ourselves, although we couldn't help comparing ourselves with Kathleen, whose demeanor (风度) and dress were perfect. Kathleen lived in her family's big house with a beautiful garden. Lisa and I lived in small apartments. Her eyes were as huge as those of most film stars. She spoke softly and politely. Her hair was waved, clean and tidy. My hair was loose and wild. Lisa and I wore clothes that didn't always match. I sometimes wore my sister's hand-me-downs. Kathleen did best in her studies and of course Miss Hanley liked her. The funny thing is that I didn't like Kathleen and neither did Lisa. In fact we didn't know why.

Lisa and I continued writing our note to Miss Hanley, "You call on Kathleen more than you call on us. You like her because she is a goody-goody (讨好卖乖的人).That's not fair! Just that we are not goody-goodies does not mean you should like us less."

注意: 1. 所续写短文的词数应为150词左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

My heart was pounding (怦怦直跳)as we left the note before class on Miss Hanley's desk.

Most people don’t remember how they learn to read and write because it happens to them naturally. Writing just means turning thoughts into words on a page. But it is a completely different story if you are born with Dyslexia, a learning disability which affects skills involved in reading, spelling and writing. Writing is a big challenge for these kids and unfortunately, I was one of them.

When in kindergarten, I was always struggling with my writing. For example, I used to misspell beautiful. Never could I quite remember that the e went before the a. It annoyed my teacher very much for I happened to love using beautiful a lot. If I was going to use the word so much she figured the least I could do was spelling it right. My mom complained that I just didn’t try hard. Every time I got my paper back, I dared not open it because I knew it must be full of red lines and a disappointing “C”.

Two years later, I came to a primary school, still with far satisfying writing. But a new teacher, Mrs. White came to my life. In my eyes, she was very beautiful. She had bright blue eyes, short dark hair, red lips and fair skin, as beautiful as Snow White.

Actually, I don’t remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me that we used to write articles a lot. And I would bring back what I wrote and she would look at it and see there were so many mistakes, both in grammar and spelling. But there were no red corrections, always a star and sometimes even a “Good”, which would make my heart cry with happiness. I always looked forward to the next writing class. It worried my mother, though, thinking Mrs. White was an irresponsible teacher. So one day when she went in to meet Mrs White for one of those Parent-Teacher meetings, she asked her why she never corrected my mistakes and why she never red-pencilled in the wrong spellings of words or grammatical errors.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Mrs. White smiled and said she didn’t focus on my mistakes.

I went to her office, asking shyly whether I could attend the writing competition.
