A Son’s Love
Our church congregation in Toronto has a way of assisting those who have financial difficulties without making the recipient feel shame or guilt. Money is dropped into an offering box with only the name of the recipient on the envelope. The envelopes are then distributed to those members without them knowing the name of the giver.
There came a time when my husband and I were among those in need. We did not talk about our financial difficulty with anyone. The only reason our children knew was because we had to cut back on many things. Still, we hoped they were not aware of the extent of our need, nor of how much their father and I were suffering because of it. We did not want to burden them with a problem they could do nothing to solve.
Our situation wasn’t improving, and my husband and I knew that we would have to look for outside help. Just as we reached the point of despair, our church gave us a gift envelope that had been left in the offering box. We were overjoyed to receive a very substantial amount of money, enough to bring us through that desperate time. We couldn’t help but wonder who had given such a generous gift. We were extremely relieved and enormously grateful.
A year later, our seventeen-year-old son was applying for a student loan so he could attend university. It was then we discovered that his savings account was almost empty. His father and I were very disturbed by this. We had trusted him to put part of his wages from his part-time job into the bank towards his education. From the time he was nine years old he had been a paper carrier for The Toronto Star, and he had worked very hard for his small earnings.

When Ruth Hagan was 78 years old, she visited her daughter Judy and teenage granddaughter Marcy in California. They headed for their cabin, going forty miles up and down the mountains in their Bronco, winding terrifyingly close to cliffs.
After dinner Marcy announced the water tank was low and that she would take the Bronco down to the pump and get water. Ruth was nervous about her young granddaughter driving down the narrow dirt road by herself, but Judy reminded her that Marcy had been driving vehicles up there on the ranch roads since she was 12.
"Just be careful, Marcy," her mother warned. "The cliff side is pretty shaky. Be sure to hug the mountain side." Fifteen minutes later Judy was still watching when suddenly she screamed. "Oh no! She went over the cliff, Momma! The Bronco and Marcy—they went over! We have to help her! Come on!"
Judy took off running. Ruth ran behind her, but Judy was quickly out of sight. Ruth raced down the steep hill, breathing hard. She ran on and on, down the hill, up the next, trying to catch up with her daughter. It was getting harder and harder to see anything at dusk.
Ruth stopped and looked around. She screamed into the darkness, "Judy, where are you?" Off to her immediate right and down the cliff she heard, "Down here, Mother! Don't come near the edge! I slipped on loose rocks and fell over. I'm down about twenty feet."
"Oh, dear God, Judy, what can I do?"
"Just stay back, Momma! I think I can crawl back up. I saw the white roof of the Bronco when I was falling, Momma, and I heard Marcy calling for help. She's alive! But she's way down there in the valley. You have to go back to the cabin and phone for help. Tell them to send a helicopter. We have to get Marcy out!!"
Ruth turned around and started running back the hill she'd just ran awkwardly down. Up the hill, down the next. She had one hill left to climb when she fell on her face. Chest pains took her breath away. She started to sob.

Back in the early 1980s, the idea of home computers was catching on. I wasn't keen on getting one. Somehow, I evolved and have owned several computers over the years. Some days, I loved my computer, but more often than not, I hated it. I didn't grow up with them, and they were a challenge to my mental health. Dealing with modern technology was my introduction to stress, and I know who to blame: my children.
They weren't satisfied that their dad and I finally bought a computer and learned to send e-mails. We were quite happy with that, but next came a cellphone. Then just talking on the phone was not acceptable; they insisted we learn to text as well. We couldn't get a break.
I remember well the night that Facebook became a household word around here. Those kids of ours were determined to set up a joint account for us. It took some convincing. We felt no guilt for grating on (激怒) their nerves considering the drama they'd sometimes created for us during their teenage years. A little payback wouldn't hurt those two.
More recently, my husband and I were forced into getting rid of our flip phones and getting smartphones. I will admit that I progressed into appreciating mine. I liked speaking to Siri and finding out what I needed to know in an instant. I enjoyed having Internet access everywhere I went. I felt a sense of accomplishment; my husband-not so much. To this day, he would happily take back his flip phone.
Last Christmas, our children surprised us with yet another popular form of technology-Alexa. The girls took our smartphones in hand and got us programmed. Before we fully understood what was happening, we could tell Alexa to turn our lamp on or off, and she would. To be honest, we were a bit annoyed at having to learn how to use yet another device, but we decided to keep it. We mastered turning the lamp on and off, and once again I got the hang of it sooner than my husband did. I became his Alexa coach.

Dave was a make-up(化妆) artist who regularly held make-up artistry classes at the local community college. He was well-known as an excellent trainer and enjoyed great popularity.
Usually, the majority of his students were middle-aged housewives who wanted to improve their make-up skills so as to make themselves more attractive. But this time, it was beyond him that a man attended his classes as well.
The new student was a gentleman in his best years with seemingly endless interest in make-up artistry. He was eager to learn as much as he possibly could and asked questions whenever and wherever possible. He was so absorbed in learning that he wouldn’t stop until he was satisfied with the result of his work.
Understandably, the man was the number one subject of conversation when the other women gathered together.
Speculations(猜测) quickly started to spread. Why did he learn make-up? Was he to seek for a woman to be his life partner? How about my neighbor’s youngest daughter? Why on earth would he attend such a women’s class? Who would it be?
Doubts like these were crowding in.
The community college was placed in a remote rural area, which was why the other participants were quite doubtful about the man’s intentions. Throughout the lessons, ignoring the curious women around him, the man carefully listened and wrote everything down he learned, leaving the women more and more curious and puzzled.
When the day and class were slowly coming to an end, the gossiping women simply could not hide their curiosity any longer, for they knew it was time to remove their doubts, otherwise...
Finally, one of them couldn’t resist her curiosity, so she plucked up the courage to ask him why he was so interested in make-up artistry.
What followed the question was a dead silence. It seemed as if a century had passed, and he slowly opened his mouth and here came the most inspiring and beautiful reply.

My sister Emily is afraid of all sorts of interesting things like spiders, frogs, and snakes — especially snakes. One day last summer, I found a garter snake (束带蛇) at my uncle’s farm. I caught him so I could get a good close-up look at him. His eyes were red, so I named him Red Eye.
My uncle told me I could take him home and keep him for a pet. I said, “No. Emily hates snakes. She’s afraid of them.” “Nonsense,” said my uncle. “Why would she be afraid of a little garter snake? It won’t hurt you, if you handle it correctly.” So my aunt gave me an empty coffee can, and I made little holes in the plastic lid(盖子). Then I took him home.
But one day a terrible thing happened. I went into the family room to say hello to Red Eye after school as usual, but he didn’t rise up to greet me. Right away I noticed that the top of his glass tank (玻璃缸) was slightly ajar (半开着). Red Eye was gone.
“Mother!” I screamed at the top of my voice. “Somebody left the lid off Red Eye’s tank, and he’s gone.” I started to cry. “Oh, Cindy. We’ll find him; he’s probably in this room somewhere.” Mother started to comfort me.
At that moment Emily came into the room. “What’s the matter?” she asked. “You know what’s the matter,” I yelled at her. “You finally managed to get rid of Red Eye. I hope you’re satisfied.” “I didn’t do anything,” Emily said. “I just got home.” “All right, girls,” Mother said. “We’ll all look for Red Eye.” “I’m not looking for any snake,” Emily said with feeling.
“You really like that snake, don’t you? I thought you were keeping him just because you know I think snakes are scary (吓人的).” I started to look for Red Eye. I did not want to talk to Emily again.

Jayden was heading to the place he’d call home for the next week: Camp Massomet.
Being away from home for the first time was hard for Jayden. On top of that, Jayden was asked to join the same patrol (巡逻队) with a kid they called Big Quinn, who always seemed to be unhappy, especially in the morning. Jayden tried hard to avoid upsetting (打扰) him.
On the fourth night, some of the older guys came back from the lake, laughing excitedly. Big Quinn was at the center of the pack, holding something above his head. It was a fish, the biggest Jayden had ever seen.
Big Quinn was smiling from ear to ear, and Jayden realized it was the first time he’d seen him wear a smile. Kids in Jayden’s patrol were excited to taste Big Quinn’s fish.
Evening came.
Jayden began to set out the paper cups around the table. Jayden didn’t feel like walking all the way around the table to set out the last few cups. So he spread out his body across the table to put the cups in place. But when he pulled his arm back, he overturned the plate holding Big Quinn’s fish, which was cut into thin pieces and covered in foil (锡纸), knocking it off the table.
Jayden watched in fear as it fell onto the dusty ground. Frightened, without a second thought, he kicked the fish under the table and covered it up with dirt. Then Jayden set the plate back on the table, the foil still in the shape of a fish that wasn’t there.
Then Big Quinn came and picked up the plate. He noticed something unusual. He opened the foil.
“HEYY!” he shouted. “Where’s my FISH?” He wasn’t smiling anymore.
After dinner, it rained hard. Everything on the ground was washed away in the heavy rain. Jayden’s eyes went to the area under his patrol’s picnic table. The fish was gone.
Big Quinn would never know what he did.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Katie was six years old. She was part of a big family. She lived with her mom, dad and three older brothers. Her older brothers all played sports. They rode their bikes around town. Katie wanted to be just like them when she got bigger.
One summer day, the boys all decided to go swimming at the neighborhood pool. Katie wanted to go, too.
“But we’re riding our bikes.” said Tom. He was the oldest.
“You’re too slow because you still have training wheels,” added Mike, the next oldest.
“Boys, I want you to take Katie swimming with you,” said Dad. “It will be fun.”
The third brother, David, sighed. “Fine,” he said. “But you’ll have to peddle fast.”
All four children put on the helmets and got on their bikes. The boys rode fast. Katie did her best to keep up, but her brothers were right. She was slower than they were. Soon she fell behind.
“Wait for me!” Katie cried. But her brothers were so far ahead that they didn’t hear her. Katie wasn’t going to give up. She pumped her legs up and down hard, and soon she arrived at the pool. Her brothers were waiting at the gate.
“Let’s got!” said Tom. He paid the entrance fee, and they all went inside to put their beach towels on the chairs they liked best. The boys splashed around in the shallow end of pool with Katie. They feel bad about leaving her behind and wanted to make sure she had fun. But soon the boys noticed that their friends were all in line at the diving board. One by one, the brothers joined the big kids taking turns jumping off the springboard into the deep end of the pool. Some kids tried to make the biggest splash. Others worked on special jumps and dives to show off. Everyone was laughing and having fun.
