One snowy day, the winds grew stronger and the snow turned into a blinding snowstorm. A farmer sat down to relax by the fire for the evening. Then he heard a loud knock, something hitting against the window. He looked outside but could not see anything. So he ventured outside for a better view. In the field near his house he saw, of all the strangest things, a flock of swans (天鹅).

They were apparently flying to look for a warmer area down south, but they were caught in the snowstorm. The storm became too blinding and violent for the swans to fly or see their way. They were trapped on his farm, with no food or shelter, unable to do more than wave their wings and fly in aimless circles. He had sympathy for them and wanted to help them.

He thought to himself, the barn(谷仓)would be a great place for them to stay. It was warm and safe; surely they could spend the night and wait out the storm. So he opened the barn door for them. He waited, watching them, hoping they would notice the open barn and go inside.

However, they did not notice the barn or realize what it could mean for them. He moved closer toward them to get their attention, but they just moved away from him out of fear. He went into the house and came back with some bread, broke it up, and made a bread trail to the barn. They still did not catch on.

Starting to get frustrated, he went over and tried to drive them to wand the barn. They panicked and scattered into every direction except toward the barn. Nothing he did could get them to go into the barn, where there was a warm safe shelter. Feeling totally frustrated, he exclaimed, “Why don’t they follow me? Can’t they see this is the only place where they can survive the storm? How can I possibly get them into the barn to save them?”

It was a late Saturday afternoon in early March, and I was sweating gracelessly, in search of the only gift my son said he wanted from Los Angeles: a map to the homes of the stars.

I was here for meetings in Westwood, near the UCLA Medical Centre. Should I wander a little? Try to find one of the treasured maps?

From the front of the hotel taxi line, a cheerful driver said, ”No problem. Map vendors(小 贩) are everywhere!“ Before long, we saw a hand-painted sandwich board saying: Star Maps. The taxi stopped. A fellow approached with a thin folded sheet and said: ”Ten dollars. “

Ten dollars. American! With righteous assurance, I informed him, ”That’s too much. “ The map man shrugged. We continued, whizzing past the Beverly Hills Hotel into West Hollywood. The driver dropped me at the House of Blues, encouraging me to stroll. I began walking, certain I would find a low-cost star map soon.

I was wrong. There was hardly anybody on the street. There didn’t seem to be many real stores, just cars and bars. No maps. No stars. Blocks passed. The sun began to sink. At the edge of West Hollywood, another fellow appeared ahead, selling star maps to a car full of teenage girls.

Ten dollars still. Still too much. Forgot it. My son would understand. Time to go back to Westwood. That night, I called my wife. ” Did you get one of those maps to the stars? He’s been talking about nothing else. “ This news was hard to ignore. But it was late.

Morning was coming. There would be last try. After I checked out, the first taxi in the hotel line was an old Chevy driven by a skinny guy from North Carolina. At nine in the morning, map vendors were nowhere to be found,

”You know, “ said the driver, ” The guys with the maps just aren’t up yet!“ He was right.

”Forget it. Let’s go to the airport. ”

“Well, ” said the driver, ”I could mail you one if you like. ”

Sure. Trust this guy? I might as well toss cash onto the freeway. But exiting the taxi, I recognized my last chance. I handed the driver $13 and my business card.

The Box Cat

Chester was born in a box with four other kittens. He was in a smaller box marked "free kitten" when Sasha met him and took him home. And from that moment on, he loved boxes. Every day after he finished grooming(刷洗), licking his paws and fur with his tongue, he would look around for a box to sleep in.

He slept in hat boxes, gift boxes and takeout food boxes. He slept in Sasha's sock drawer, if she left it open. One year Sasha got a beautiful dollhouse for her birthday, a dark green three-story house with lots of furniture. Sasha loved it. So did Chester. He liked to push the furniture out of all the rooms and sit in the bedroom on the second floor. Sasha had to redecorate the dollhouse every day, but she didn't mind as long as Chester was happy.

One day Sasha came home from school, and she couldn't find Chester. He wasn't in the dollhouse, or her sock drawer, even though she'd forgotten to close it.

"Mom, Dad!" Sasha wailed(大叫). "Chester is gone!"

Sasha's mom looked in the attic. There were boxes and dust bunnies, and even a mouse that had escaped Chester's notice, but no Chester. Sasha's dad looked in the kitchen cabinets, but no Chester.

Suddenly ---

"I found him!" Sasha cried.

Chester was inside her mom's new glass vase, and he didn't look happy at all. Even his whiskers(须)looked sad. Sasha tipped the vase over gently and tried to pull him out, but Chester just yowled(惨叫).

"We'll have to break the vase to get him out!" Sasha cried.

Now her mom didn't look happy. It was a beautiful vase, clear glass with blue and green swirls.

"No," said her dad. "If we break it, the glass shards(碎片)might hurt Chester. Maybe we can put butter on the inside of the vase and slide him out, like the time you got that ring stuck on your finger."

Paragraph 1: Sasha's mom buttered as much of the inside of the vase as she could reach.

A wealthy master once owned a large farm with a big house, where he employed two servants to work in the fields.

One servant was very loyal to his master. He placed the command of his master in his heart and obeyed it while the other servant only heard the words of his master, but went on his own way.

The first servant, who loved his master more than himself, worked really hard. Every day he planted seeds under the sun. Though sometimes he felt so tired, he never quit; he just took a rest and thought of his master coming back. There were also times when he got hurt because of stones, insects and other harmful objects but still he never gave up; he continued doing what his master had commanded. He knew that someday all his hard work would pay off and that his master would be satisfied with him. But the other servant, who loved himself more than his master, enjoyed the pleasure of the world. He thought that his master would never know what he was doing. He used his freedom for his own sake. He just ignored his master’s command and followed his own will.

Many years passed, but still the master did not come back. The first servant went on working hard in the fields for a good harvest year after year while the other servant wandered around the world.

One day their master appeared suddenly and was pleased when he found one servant harvesting the crops in the fields. Of course, he was disappointed when he couldn’t find the other one.

The master called the two servants and explained why he had been away for such a long time.
