As a fourteen-year-old girl, you may think that the biggest problem you can probably face is failing one of your classes in high school, but not everything is as easy as it seems. My parents are going through a lot lately. We recently moved from Houston and bought a house in Dallas, and my dad had almost no money left in the bank due to the fact that he had to pay the water and electricity company in order for them to be available in my house.

My brother, who was a nice, happy, free-caring six-year –old boy, just like every other, started to become very distant from us the first week we moved into the house. As much as we tried to ask him what was wrong, he wouldn’t tell us. I was really confused by the way he acted, because he normally was a nice and kind little boy who would often go out and play with the neighbours and would just be outside, enjoying the day. That little boy completely turned around and became a very distant, cold child. He would keep silent and sit in his room the whole day with the door closed. He would not go out even for supper, and we were wondering what happened.

We went to talk to his teacher who said that he was very shy when it came to talking in front of the other kids, but he had developed a little confidence and started to play with the kids in his class. The teacher mentioned that he and a kid from a higher level started ‘‘hanging out” away from the rest of the kids. My mum thought of it as a good thing, thinking it meant that my brother had started to make new friends, but I knew it meant something else. I tried talking to my brother even though he didn’t want to, but he didn’t say anything dealing with the bigger kid.

Paragraph 1:

Until one day, he came home, crying, and it seemed I was the only one who noticed.

Linda, a high school girl, was feeling depressed after she had failed her mid-term exams. She didn’t answer her teachers’ questions actively in class like she used to. Instead, she began to lower her head and got absent-minded easily. Her friends and classmates were worried about her, but she didn’t feel like talking about it with them. Mrs. Green, her English teacher, noticed her changes and decided to do something before it got worse.

One day, Mrs. Green entered the classroom and asked her students to prepare for a surprise test. They waited anxiously at their desks for the test to begin. Mrs. Green handed out the question papers, with the text facing down as usual. After she handed them all out, she asked her students to turn the page and begin. To everyone’s surprise, there were no questions, just a black dot in the center of the page. Mrs. Green, seeing the expression on everyone’s face, told them the following:

“I want you to write what you see there.”

The students, confused, got started on the task.

At the end of the class, Mrs. Green collected all the answer papers and started reading them aloud in front of all the students. Just as Mrs. Green had expected, with no exception, all of them described the black dot, trying to explain its position in the middle of the sheet, etc. Mrs. Green then picked out Linda’s paper and added,

“Linda, I like your idea. Would you please follow me to the office and talk about it?”

“Er... Yes, madam!” Linda was puzzled because she thought her idea was no better than anyone else’s. Like others, she also described the black dot only and ignored the white part of the paper.

The city marathon was now just a week away, and Beth Barrett was getting nervous. She had been training hard all year, come rain or shine. Although she had attempted it the previous year, and had eventually crossed the finish line, it took her several hours and she had to stop running many times. So she vowed (发誓) to complete it again the following year in at least half the time and without stopping. She was a focused person, and having a goal helped her concentrate.

There was nothing special about this Wednesday morning. Beth got up early as usual and put on her running gear. As she pulled on her running shoes, she looked out the window. It was cloudy but not raining, and there was a light breeze blowing the leaves of the trees. Perfect running weather, she thought. She decided to take her favorite route, across the park, down to the harbour, along the beach and back up the main street to her apartment. She could do that in 45 minutes, but today she would try for a 35.

As she crossed the park, she saw a man and old woman ahead of her. She didn’t think anything of it at first, but then she noticed the man was pulling the woman’s bag from her. The man, looking very anxious, managed to get the bag, and set off across the park towards the harbour. It was early and there were not many people around. So after making sure the woman was OK, Beth took off after the man.

Beth Barrett didn’t think much, but she knew she had to do something. It could be dangerous, chasing a criminal, but something on the man’s face told her the situation was not that clear cut. Her training had clearly paid off. She could easily keep pace with the man, who seemed unfit and was clearly troubled that he was being followed. Ten minutes later, they had reached the beach. The man stopped suddenly and turned around.

Paragraph 1:

“OK, OK, here, have the bag back!” said the man, exhausted.

We three were running down the path, shouting and laughing when our dog Rubby suddenly stopped in the distance. He turned around, eyeing us, with his tail swinging up and down.

My little brother Toby immediately sped up and rushed to where Rubby was. He bent down and picked up something and ran back to us.

It was a bunch of keys. We gathered in a circle, examining the keys one by one, hoping to find some useful information about its owner. There were 3 keys, a house key, a mail key and a car key and a unique key fob(吊坠), very likely designed specially.

“Gosh, the owner might be in great trouble.” My sister sighed. She was right. We once lost our keys. Although we had an extra house key, it took our parents quite a long time to get a new mail key, let alone there was a car key.

Who might have lost them?

After many wild guesses, we finally drew a conclusion: It might belong to someone in our neighborhood as only our neighbors wandered into the woods for a walk. But it was still impossible to figure out who it was. We had a very big neighborhood.

“The owner might come back to look for them.” Toby reminded.

So we decided to stay where we were, keeping a watchful eye on all passers-by. Our little dog ran in circles of excitement that we stayed so long in the wild. We remained in the woods for two hours, asking everyone we came across whether they lost their keys, but in vain.

It seemed we had to give up. But my sister wouldn’t, saying that she just couldn’t stop picturing the owner brushing aside tall grasses hoping to find the lost keys. “How anxious and upset the owner would be!”

I took a look at the bunch of keys again and quite by accident, found the key fob had the alarm button, “Look! If we press the alarm button, close enough of course, we can set off the owner’s car alarm...”

“That’s brilliant.”
