TikTok is the birthplace of the entertainment stars of the new generation Z (born after1996). Ambitious young people have been able to attract huge audiences on the social media platform by dancing, singing, pulling pranks, performing skits and whatever else they can think of in short videos, most of which last between 15 seconds and a minute. Obviously, it’s a place for kids and most social media is youth-oriented. However, it maybe not just kids anymore. Austin, for instance, is 82 years old and is known to his 1.4 million TikTok fans as “Old Man Steve”.
Austin and several other older social media stars have developed big TikTok followings over the last few years, with fan bases well into seven or even eight figures. Most of them uploaded videos just for fun, but were lucky enough to go viral. Some have become full-time TikTok bloggers, making use of their fame on TikTok to appear on other platforms, and TV as well as ads and endorsement (代言). While they are just as energetic as the young people, they bring their own interest to TikTok. “I think that it’s a great thing for seniors to be able to be on the internet and communicate,” Old Man Steve say “I don’t think it’s just for the young people.”
The folk listed below is one of the biggest older TikTok stars—Jenny Krupa. We keep constantly checking our laptops, tablets, and phones with stress, for fear of missing out. Are we addicted? How to regain our focus?
The solutions of two experts, Larry Rosen, a psychologist, and Samuel, a technologist, offer useful approaches separately on how we can begin to tackle this huge and growing challenge.
In one of his studies, Rosen’s colleague Nancy Cheever brought 163 students into a lecture hall, asked them to sit without talking, doing work, or using their phones, and then assessed their anxiety over the next hour. Although light smartphone users showed no change, moderate users experienced initial alarm that leveled off, and those accustomed to checking their phones all day long felt their anxiety rise immediately and continue to increase. Some people refer to the overuse of digital devices as an addiction. But since most of us don’t appear to gain much pleasure from the behavior—a defining feature of addiction—Rosen doesn’t classify it as such.
How do we calm the anxiety and thereby avoid the distraction? Rosen recommends using behavioral principles to disconnect yourself from your digital devices. Allow yourself to check all modes of e-communication, but then shut everything down and silence your phone. Set an alarm for 15 minutes, and when it rings, give yourself one minute for a tech check-in. Repeat this process until you are comfortable increasing your off-grid time to an hour or several hours.
Samuel argues that “Turning off” is simply not a well-founded solution in the digital age. Technology was not the problem; our use of it was. We were not using tools designed to make online communications as focused and productive as possible. Now the first step is to abandon the myth (荒诞的说法) of “keeping up”. Instead, your goals should be to sort and limit the information you receive and to streamline the work of reading, responding to, and sharing what matters. Then, as for E-mail, news consumption and posting, automation offers huge benefits. Outlook, Gmail, and most other major e-mail tools will allow you to set rules and filters.

Seventeen countries face “extremely high water stress” because they use 80 percent of their available water each year. The situation is made worse by a rise in dry periods linked to climate change, the World Resources Institute (WRI) said.
New information from WRI's Aqueduct Water Risk Atlas showed the countries suffering most are in and around the Middle East and North Africa. The Atlas helps governments, investors, and other users understand where and how water risks arise worldwide. It uses a special method and the best-available data to create customizable global maps of water risks.
Qatar is the most water-stressed country, followed by Israel. India ranks 13th among “extremely high” water-stressed nations. But with a population of more than 1.3 billion, it has more than three times the people in the other 16 countries combined, which means besides plenty of fresh water, much more is demanded for Indian daily life, agricultural development etc., resulting in the higher likelihood of water shortages for the country than the other 16.
India's city, Chennai, was the latest city worldwide to warn it could be without water, as water storage levels fell. “That followed a similar announcement from Cape Town last year. It’s good that there's just one city mentioned,” said Betsy Otto, Director of WRI's Global Water Program. “But more of these kinds of “Day Zeros” are round the comer. And soon, the situation will be different, with more people put in a tight spot.”
Many things threaten the worlds water supplies, from climate change to poor supervision, according to WRI. “High dependence on groundwater supplies, which are decreasing, is an added concern,” Paul Reig said. He leads work on the WRI Atlas. Reig noted groundwater supplies are difficult to manage because they're deep below the Earth’s surface. Nearly a third of fresh water is groundwater. “It's poorly understood. We have got to get down studying it deeply and quickly, working for more available fresh water?”
1. What does the WRI Atlas serve as?A.A database about water storage and supplies. |
B.A tool offering information about water risks. |
C.A company collecting water-related information. |

Recently, scientists conducted an unusual experiment involving zebras and horses dressed in black and white striped costumes. They found that flies gathered around horses and zebras at a similar rate, but landed on zebras quarter as often. When uniformly colored horses were dressed in “zebra coats”, the flies made far fewer landings on the striped areas but were not kept away from the uncovered heads.
A video showed that the flies made uncontrolled approaches when faced with a striped landing area. Typically they came in too fast, often crashing into zebras or giving up the landing altogether.
Study leader Professor Tin Caro, from the University of California, said, “Once they get close to the zebras, they tend to fly past or knock against them. This indicates that stripes may interrupt the flies' abilities to have controlled landing.” Dr Martin How, a member of the team from lie University of Bristol, said “Stripes may dazzle the flies in some way once they are close enough to ace them with their low- resolution(低分率的)eyes.”
In a similar way, human pilots can be dazzled when attempting to land into the sun. The study took place a UK horse farm in Somerset that keeps with horses and zebras. The purpose of zebra stripes has long been a mystery. Theories about their functions have included camouflage(伪装) ,a means of confusing other animals, a method of signaling other zebras, and system of controlling heat.
More recent research has suggested that somehow the stripes reduce the chances of a zebra being bitter by flies. As additional protection, zebras swing their tails almost continuously to keep flies off, the study has found. Unless the flies are particularly determined, they will stop feeding or attempt to free from them.

Sounds perfect, doesn’t it? Holiday hygge is easy and comforting. Most people are already doing at least some of these simple hygge holidays without even knowing it.
Hygge is a Danish word originally coming from an old Norwegian word meaning well-being and protection from the outside harm. It’s known that winters in Denmark are severe and last long. The concept of hygge has been used by Danish people to keep themselves mentally positive in the dark winter season and fill their homes with comfort and love.
Hygge is a very important word to Danish people, often used to describe what their culture is all about and it is not necessarily a thing, something you can buy, but rather more of something you feel. Hygge really is a reflection of one aspect of Danish living, and, happily, in the last five years the concept of hygge has made its way to the US and many other countries. I mean what’s not to like about nurturing(培育)peace and quiet and coziness?
Here are some more descriptive words for hygge: comfort, familiarity, friendship, laughter, and even seasonal homemade food and drinks. While it is possible to achieve hygge any time of the year with hygge activities-an outdoor BBQ with friends and a movie under the stars with family are good examples of summertime hygge, it is most commonly associated with the colder months because of its ability to lift one’s spirits during dark winter months.
Hygge is the most suitable for the November and December holiday season because it’s all about peaceful and cozy surroundings that fill you with contentment. There is indeed something you can do to bring holiday hygge into your home this season.
1. Why do Danish people choose a hygge holiday?A.To deal with cold and long winters. | B.To follow the latest holiday trend. |
C.To fight against nature physically. | D.To spend more time with their family. |
A.It reflects Danish living totally. | B.It is mainly about some feeling. |

The city is also considered to be a leading technological pioneer. One key example is that Shanghai is the first city in the world to have 5G coverage. 5G is bringing into a new age, with faster speed than 4G—100 times faster, to be exact. In fact, this wonderful technology has some really fantastic usages in many parts.
Tim Clancy, Hangzhou Culture and Tourism Promotion Ambassador, said 5G surely changes the way we use technology. “When 2G came out, we had voice. When 3G came out, we had internet. When 4G came out, we can use such things like Douyin and WeChat, which has changed our life so much.” Clancy said. “As the newest network, 5G makes greater improvements in speed than 4G. I think Shanghai can be seen as the birthplace of everything modern in China. 5G technology is the perfect program for all people in Shanghai to experiment with.”
5G is expected to greatly change the world—medicine, tourism and also internet. Clancy said 5G increases flows, and we can improve the way we actually live with the collection of data.
Andy Mok, senior fellow at the Center for China and Globalization, thought 5G is more than just smart phones, but all the things that people don’t see. “5G is the moment for Chinese production, especially Huawei. One reason is that Huawei laid the ground work for this many years ago.” Mok said.
Mok added Apple is slower in changes since the iPhone 10, but China has seen the fastest progress in its smart phone industry that no other countries can match.
In fact, 5G network coverage has developed rapidly in Shanghai, and has made good preparations for formal business use. Moreover, Shanghai mobile is continuing to enlarge the coverage of 5G network, and will open more than 5,000 base stations this year.
