In 1981, seven crested ibises were found in Yangxian county, Shaanxi province,     2    were believed to be the last remaining ones worldwide. But now, they have come back from the brink of     3    (extinct). Researchers said that     4     number has risen to more than 7,000 worldwide. There are 5,000 crested ibises in Shannxi alone.

“The secret for the inspirational case of     5     (successful) saving crested ibises from a small population is the immediate onsite protection approach adopted at the very beginning,” Zhang Yueming, an expert who works at the crested ibis nature reserve in Yangxian.

6     the fourth day after the discovery of the seven crested ibises, the local government published a series of emergency notices to protect crested ibises, for example, the bans on hunting. Later, it also established the Qinling No. 1 protection station and sent four people     7     (guard) the seven birds. These guardians observed and recorded the birds’ habits and kept them safe. Meanwhile, new methods were used to protect crested ibises, mainly     8     (include) artificial breeding and reintroduction. In 1990, the Shaanxi Crested Ibis Rescue and Breeding Center was established. At the center, crested ibises are artificially bred and can receive timely treatment     9     they are sick. Over the next 30 years, they     10     (establish) a complete system of artificial breeding techniques, laying a foundation for the birds’ later reintroduction into the wild.

The first domestic chickens we have found lived no earlier than 3,670 years ago, suggesting they have a far shorter history than we thought. These birds don’t seem to have been raised for their meat,     1     (make) it unclear what drove domestication. The chickens alive today descend from a wild bird native to South-East Asia     2     (call) the red jungle fowl, but exactly     3     domestication occurred was unclear. Some researchers have estimated that the first domestic chicken lived more than 6000 years ago, while others claim     4     (find) chicken bones at 10,000-year-old sites.     5     analysis by Ophelie Lebrasseur at the Centre for Anthropobiology and Genomics of Toulouse in France and her team concludes that the     6     (early) clear evidence of domestic chickens appeared between 1,650 BC and 1,250 BC at a site called Ban Non Wat in central Thailand. Not only     7     (be) chicken bones superabundant at the site, but there are signs that people were buried with the birds,     8     Lebrasseur says makes a domestic relationship clear. Lebrasseur and her team suspect chicken domestication might have been triggered by the       9     (appear) of cereal fanning in South-East Asia. “This created a more open, less tree-covered environment, which is actually an environment where red jungle fowl thrive,” she says, “And they could have fed     10     the waste from human societies.”

During the summer, more than 30,000 visitors come here on     2     average day. Even during off-peak parts of the year, there is always a crowd in front of the Panda House. Since their arrival, the two pandas     3     (be) the stars of the Moscow Zoo,     4     (attract) thousands of visitors interested to see them,     5     are among the rarest animals in the world.

From monkeys to crabs, wildlife faces threat from face masks

Masks that helped save lives during the coronavirus pandemic are proving a    1    (dead) danger for wildlife, with birds and marine creatures trapped in a number of thrown-away facial coverings littering animal habitats.

Single-use surgical masks    2    (find) scattered around pavements, water ways and beaches worldwide since countries began ordering their use in public places.

3    (wear) once, the thin protective materials can take hundreds of years to decompose(降解).

Monkeys have been spotted chewing the strips off old and tossed-aside masks in Malaysia. And in an incident    4    captured headlines in Britain, a gull was rescued by the RSPCA after its legs became tangled in the strips of a disposable mask for up to a week.

The biggest impact may be in the water. More than 1.5 billion masks made    5    (they)way into the oceans last year, according to environmental group Oceans Asia.

Already there are signs that masks are increasingly    6    (worse) threats to marine life. Conservationists in Brazil found one inside the stomach of     7    penguin after its body washed up on a beach, while French campaigners Operation Mer Propre found a dead crab trapped in a mask in a saltwater lake near the Mediterranean.

Masks and gloves are "particularly problematic” for sea creatures, says George Leonard, chief scientist from Ocean Conservancy. "When those plastics break    8     in the environment, they form smaller and smaller particles," he told AFP. "Those particles then enter the food chain and impact entire ecosystems," he added.

Campaigners have urged people to throw away single-use masks    9    (proper) and snip the straps to reduce the risk of animals becoming trapped. Oceans Asia has also called on governments    10    (encourage) the use of washable masks.
