Born on April 2, 1805, in Odense, Denmark, Hans Christian Andersen was an emotional, yet imaginative, child. His father, a poor shoemaker, died in 1816. With a mother who was very superstitious(迷信的)and unable to read or write, the boy received little education as a child.

Andersen traveled to Copenhagen. There, he hoped to become an actor or singer. He was lucky enough to spend some time with the Royal Theater, but when his voice changed, he had to leave. Luckily, one of the directors helped him by arranging his education.

Andersen gained admission to the University of Copenhagen in 1828, and his literary career began soon afterwards. He hoped to achieve success with poems and plays, but underestimated the kind of stories which have made him famous. Though not particularly fond of children, he had a gift for entertaining them. This led a friend to suggest he write down the stories he invented.

Many of Andersen’s tales are based on folklore, and many are products of his own imagination. All of them are told in a humorous and informal style that children loved from the start. Few serious critics, however, took notice of them when they first appeared.

Before his death in 1875, Andersen regularly traveled around Europe, and was enthusiastically welcomed everywhere he went. Because he had always wanted to be famous, he worked hard to gain a reputation in European literary circles. Being a rather vain man, he complained in ”The Fairy Tale of My Life“, one of three autobiographies he wrote, that people were not interested in his “serious” writing.

Nowadays, of course, Hans Christian Andersen is a household name. Whether he would have liked it or not, millions of children and adults will always be grateful for the magic his stories have brought to their lives.

1】For most of her school years, Tamika Catchings kept a secret from her classmates and teachers. She was born with hearing loss in both ears. If someone spoke too quietly or with their back to her, she was unable to know what they were saying. She taught herself to read lips. To keep up with her schoolwork, she depended on textbooks for instruction.

Though Catchings had hearing aids, she refused to wearing them. One day, she took them off and threw them away in a field. Then she began her new life. She worked hard in the classroom and at sports. While attending high school in Illinois, Catchings led her basketball team to the state championship in 1995. That same year she and her mother moved to Duncanville, Texas. In 2004 Catchings founded the Catch the Stars Foundation, an organization that encourages children to set goals and dream big.

But those achievements were just a stepping stone to another important goal for Catchings. 文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者是一名自然摄影师,去年在野外拍摄过程中遇到熊的故事。

【推荐2】As a nature photographer, I have to face the wind and the rain, but I still enjoy working outside in the wild. One of the best things about this job is that you can observe animals in their natural environment. My favorite place to take photos is Yellowstone National Park.Yellowstone is famous for the variety of its wildlife, but it is probably best known for its bears. These huge, strong animals can live for 30 years.Despite(尽管)a weight of up to 300 kilograms, they can nun at a speed of around 64 kilometers per hour and are also excellent swimmers.

Last spring in Yellowstone, I followed a path that took me through a dark forest. When I finally stepped out of the trees, the view was breathtaking. An eagle flew over the snow-capped mountains, which were reflected(反映)in the sill lake below. While I was concentrating on photographing this amazing scene, I suddenly had a feeling that I was being watched. Slowly, and with the camera still held to my eye, I turned...and froze. Only meters away from me was a bear. With water falling off its thick, brown hair, the bear stared back at me. Time stood still as the bear and I both’ waited to see who would move first. My legs started shaking.Somehow, I forced my finger to press the button. A second later, the bear turned and ran back into the forest. When I recovered from the shock, I looked at my camera. My most frightening but magical experience was now captured(捕捉)forever in a single image.

From time to time I look at the photo as a reminder to show respect to all animals. It is after all we who are the visitors to their world.

【推荐3】I started working with my hands at a young age. The youngest of five brothers, I took on   the role as a “maintenance ( 维 修 ) man” at an early age for our family’s small grocery store. Often my dad wouldn’t give me a clear idea of how something should be done, so I just had to figure it out by researching or through trial and error.

Fast forward to 2016 and those problem-solving skills would become the focus of Tippecanoe High School’s Homebuilding class. I knew I wanted to teach the students skills that went beyond just being able to hammer nails or cut pieces of two-by-fours. The problem was   that we didn’t have the resources at the time to do much else. The idea of attracting some type of funding seemed very important. Designing, building and selling a tiny house on wheels seemed like the perfect project to accomplish the task. I reached out to a number of local businesses and most of them responded with the greatest support for what x k w we were doing.

This year we added a new element to the program. Through one of our partners, we were able to connect with the nonprofit Veteran’s Ananda Incorporated. Students in the Homebuilding class are leading the design and production of micro houses to be donated to this organization. The new partnership gives the students another focus to consider when designing and building the houses.

There has been no shortage of students since our first year. Three years ago we had 41 students, the next 191, and this year it was limited to just over 160 students so we could have a safe and manageable classroom environment. The number of girls taking the class has risen steadily over the last few years as well. This class offers something for everyone and the skills are universal.

1. How can we describe the young author?
A.He opened a small grocery store.
B.He did a lot of research in the lab.
C.He enjoyed doing hands-on activities.
D.He learnt about maintenance from his father.
2. What do the underlined words “the task” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Getting some financial support.
B.Selling a tiny house on wheels.
C.Reaching out to many local businesses.
D.Offering the students some problem-solving skills.
3. What can be inferred about the Homebuilding class from the last paragraph?
A.Its size needs increasing.
B.It is popular with the students.
C.It has caused some safety concerns.
D.Its classroom environment is hard to manage.
