It was May 17, 2015, and Brian Koonoon, then 36, had been out of contact since the 13th. He had gone missing in the Arctic.
Brian climbed the hill next to his camp and checked his radio, hoping to catch a signal. He looked back to see that the snow had already covered his tracks. Any search planes would have a hard time finding him — a tiny bit of color in a sea of white snow.
For the first time since losing contact, Brian felt a sense of despair. He thought about his family — his wife and five daughters. Then he made his decision: if he wanted to see his family again, he would just have to start walking.
He was still 40 miles away from Repulse Bay, the closest village. It would be a tough walk, but by this point he had no other choice.
He gathered his stove and tent into his bag, but soon realized that dragging it would be impossible. He made the decision to fill his bag with necessities: his remaining bread, candles, a knife, his radio and GPS. Then he started walking.
Brian made his way about 15 miles until he couldn’t walk anymore. He found a snowdrift against a rock. With his knife, he built a snow cave. He cut enough room for his body. He crawled in, ate and fell asleep. When he woke up a few hours later, Brian felt energetic and ready to walk.
Brian arrived in Repulse Bay at 5:30 am on May 20. He met a woman on the street and explained what he had been through. The woman stared at him. “You’re the guy we were looking for,” she said. Her husband had been part of the rescue operation.
Today, safe at home. Brian still misses the welcome he received. “Everyone was very happy everywhere I went,” he says. He recalls the way the village’s elders came to meet him — the man who had survived in the wild, and the man who had refused to give up.

Although the narrow sea that separates England from France is only twenty-one miles wide, the tides are dangerous, the water is freezing cold, and the weather is unpredictable. To make matters worse, the Channel is filled with seaweed, stinging jellyfish, and heavy ship traffic.
The Channel was so dangerous that by 1926 only five people in history had been able to swim across it, and all of them had been men. “Women must admit that in contests of physical skill, speed and endurance, they must remain forever the weaker sex,” a London newspaper had said just one day before Trudy’s swim. Trudy was determined to prove this view wrong.
Actually, Trudy had tried to swim the Channel once before. In August of 1925, Trudy had come within six miles of England. Then she had gotten horribly seasick, so her trainer had to pull her out of the water.
The sea was a chilly sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit when Trudy dived into the water off Cape Gris-Nez, France, at 7:09 a.m. Trudy had chosen this day for her swim because weather forecasts were favorable. But at 1:30 p.m. it started to rain. Within a few hours a storm struck the Channel. By 6:00 p.m. it seemed hopeless. The waves and tide were so fierce that for every few yards Trudy swam, she was pushed back twice as many. She fought the storm for three more hours and finally arrived at Kingsdown, England, at 9:40 p.m. She had been in the water for fourteen hours and thirty-one minutes. Trudy wasn’t just the first woman to swim the Channel, she was the fastest person to swim it. She had smashed the world-record time by almost two hours.
But Trudy’s swim had taken a toll on her body, especially her hearing. Trudy eventually gave up professional swimming and became a swimming instructor for deaf children.

Hospitals have not always been clean, quiet places. Long ago they were dirty and overcrowded. Nurses were never taught how to look after their patients and many people died. Thanks to Florence Nightingale, who changed all this.
Florence was born in 1820. She spent a lot of time playing with her dolls. She would pretend that the dolls were sick and she was their nurse. People would bring sick or hurt animals to her to look after. She even mended a dog’s broken leg when she was a young girl. She often went with her mother to visit the poor people. They took food and medicine to the sick. It was these visits that first gave her the idea of becoming a nurse.
Florence really wanted to be a doctor but she couldn’t because in those days only men were allowed to become doctors. She decided that she wanted to become a nurse. Her parents were very angry; the daughters of rich people did not work at all and they certainly did not become nurses. But Florence had made up her mind.
Her chance came in 1854 when Britain went to war with Russia in a place called the Crimea. Florence was asked to take a group of nurses to look after the sick and wounded soldiers. The hospitals were dirty, and there was not enough medicine. There were not enough beds, so some people were just lying on rags in the mud. There was so much sickness that the doctors could not treat all the soldiers.
Florence and her team cleaned the hospital rooms and beds. They made sure that the bandages were clean and that the soldiers get enough medicine. The army was unhappy because there were women so close to the fighting. They gave the nurses a lot of trouble. Florence and her team worked hard. Consequently, Florence became famous as “The Lady of the Lamp”.
After the war, Florence returned to London a national hero. A great welcome was prepared for her, but she slipped into the country unnoticed. She opened a school to teach nurses how to look after their patients properly. She never really got better from the illness that she had in the Crimea and she died in 1910.

“Charlotte,”said Wilbur,“why are you so quiet?”
“I like to sit still,”she said.“I’ve always been rather quiet...”
“Yes,but you seem different today.Do you feel all right?”
“A little tired, perhaps. But I feel peaceful. Your success in the ring competition this morning was, to a small extent, my success. Your future is assured. You’ll live, secure and safe, Wilbur. Nothing can harm you now. These autumn days will shorten and grow cold. The leaves will shake loose from the trees and fall. Christmas will come, and then the snow of winter. You’ll live to enjoy the beauty of the frozen world, for you mean a lot to Zuckerman (the owner) and he’ll not harm or kill you, ever. Winter will pass, the days will lengthen and the ice will melt. The sparrows will return and sing and the frogs will awake. All these sights and sounds will be yours to enjoy, Wilbur - this lovely world, these precious days...”
Charlotte stopped and a tear came to Wilbur’s eye. He then said.“Charlotte, when I first met you, I thought you were cruel!”
When he recovered from his emotion,he spoke again.
“Why did you do all this for me?”he asked. “I don’t deserve it. I’ve never done anything for you.”
“You are my friend. That in itself is a big thing.” replied Charlotte. “I made my webs for you because I liked you. After all, what’s a life, anyway? We’re born, we live a little while and we die. A spider’s life can’t simply trap and eat flies. By helping you, I was trying to lift up my life a little.“Well,”said Wilbur.“I’m not good at making speeches. I haven’t got your gift for words. Tracey Hermanstorfer's heart stopped beating and her son Coltyn appeared lifeless after the Caesarean(剖腹产术)section on Christmas Eve. However a few minutes after he was born, both began breathing again. Dr Stephanie Martin told Good Morning America she could not explain how the pair survived. Mrs Hermanstorfer and her husband Mike told the American television show that their baby was now healthy and that they were doing “good” following the drama at Colorado Springs Memorial Hospital.
The couple, who already had two children, had to go into the hospital seven weeks earlier than planned. Her husband, 37, said his wife was tired after receiving an epidural(硬脑膜外麻醉)during the labour(分娩)but after closing her eyes, she “wasn't waking up”.She stopped breathing and she is believed to have suffered a heart attack before her heart stopped beating entirely.
Dr Martin said she was called in and that the outlook was grim since in most situations like this,“despite the best efforts of the team”, the mother was often unable to be revived. In that case doctors then tried to focus on delivering the baby but when he was born he was “completely lifeless”.
Mr Hermanstorfer told the Associated Press news agency,“I had everything in the world taken from me, and in an hour and a half I had everything given to me.”
Dr Martin said she did not have a “great explanation” for why Mrs Hermanstorfer's heartbeat returned. “Somewhere between four and five minutes she had been without heart rate and had stopped breathing a minute or two prior to her heart stopping,” she said. The doctors were then able to bring the baby back to life, and the mother was alive after that.
Despite tests, she said doctors were still not sure about what had happened. However Mrs Hermanstorfer and her husband Mike have said they believed it was down to a miracle. She said:“I got a second chance in life.”

The father asked his son, “What is this?” The son replied, “It is a crow.” After a few minutes, the father asked his son the second time, “What is this?” The son said, “Father, I have just now told you ‘It’s a crow’.” After a little while, the old father again asked his son the third time, “What is this?” “It’s a crow, a crow, a crow.” said the son loudly. A little after, the father again asked his son the fourth time, “What is this?” This time the son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again? ‘IT IS A CROW’. Are you not able to understand this? ”
A little later the father went to his room and came back with an old diary, which he had kept since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page. When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:
