When Marco was a boy, he tried everything to get his father’s love and attention. He worked hard to earn exceptional marks; he tried to be obedient, he chose inspiring friends and always tried to behave well. However, it felt to Marco that his father had little time for him. Except for his demands around chores after school, communication was nonexistent. It seemed to Marco the only time his dad ever spoke to him was to be demanding or critical. Marco sank further into his low self-esteem and was overwhelmed with feeling unappreciated, inadequate and depressed.

One day his father, already tired after a long day, tripped over Marco’s bike in the garage. The angry quarrel that followed left Marco feeling grieved. It seemed no matter how hard he tried he could never do anything right. In despair Marco blurted out, “That’s it! It’s enough!”

For two days, Marco felt so miserable. All he could think of was wanting to leave this enormous pain, those overwhelming feelings of rejection and unworthiness.

Two days later, his aunt called him. To Marco, this seemed like a miracle. Aunt Ginette usually only called once a year, on his birthday. She said she had just seen some young teenagers participate in a public speaking contest called Gala Personnalité sponsored by Club Optimiste—and she thought about him. She thought he should give it a try. She told him she firmly believed he could perform on stage like the other kids, since she had seen him perform for the family at Christmas.

Marco was startled, and not a little taken aback. Him? Onstage? In a public speaking contest? To agree would be contrary to his entire shy, timid personality. But Aunt Ginette was so confident. She seemed really serious. She was sure it was something he could do. She truly believed in him.

Kenji and I had been playmates for years. We were always together when we were free after school. One day, Kenji and I were on the beach of a lake in the woods. Suddenly, Kenji leapt up and called, “Hi, Rough Lock.”

Rough Lock was an Indian man who Kenji knew well. He said hello to us and went back to his house. Kenji and I watched him till he disappeared briefly, then reappeared in front of the house. We could see him rocking in his rocking chair there.

Kenji ran into the water, pushing his log raft (木筏) out. He urged me to get on and pushed a pole into the sandy lake bottom to steady the raft. I stood there, hesitant. But Kenji promised he would not go far, pushing the raft close to shore. It sank and touched bottom, moving unsteadily, as I climbed on. I got down on my knees behind him.

Slowly, he pushed the raft out over the surface. The water was clear. I put my hand in it. As we pushed deeper, there was a sudden change in the temperature of the water. When I looked up, the shoreline was farther away than I had ever seen. The water around us was sharply dark and the bottom could no longer be seen. So I thought it was enough and suggested going back. Kenji gave me an approving nod but tried the last push. One hard push, and-splash (哗啦)!-the pole jumped out of his hands as Kenji suddenly fell sideways. He fell into the water. In the sound of waves, Kenji’s head reappeared. He swam to the beach. Closer to shore, he stood up in the water, turning to face me.

“Jump!” he shouted.

“I can’t! I can’t swim!” I responded.

Then slowly he stepped backward till he was out of the water.

I stared down into the deep water and back to where Kenji was standing. He signaled to me to jump again. I hesitated. Unexpectedly, he turned suddenly and fled down the beach as quickly as he could.

In order to join the Merchant Marines, I had dropped out of college after my first semester. Using an article from Life magazine as my guide I decided to hitch-hike down to New Orleans and see the world.

My family was relatively poor and my youth had been in the workingman’s section of a large New England mill town. My father and I had a hard time since my mother passed away. As she lay dying, my mother said to me in a weak voice, “Son, remember to ask your father for advice at every juncture of your life.” Yet we seemed more like room-mates rather than father-son. He thought I was foolish for dropping out of school, so I didn’t inform him of my plans.

I left a note on the kitchen table, telling him I was going to New York City for a few days and would be back soon. I walked to a highway near where I lived, stuck my thumb out, and was“on the road”.

My trip to New Orleans was a mistake. The Merchant Marine wasn’t taking on any people for a while. I decided to wait in New Orleans until it did. I lasted over a week, living in a dirty hotel until my money started to run out. I had to stay up in the park for a few days. Life seemed to become a continuous adventure. From New Orleans I went to New York and stayed with a friend for a few weeks, and then went to Martha’s Vineyard, living on the beach in April. Later, I lived in an abandoned house in Nantucket and ended up with a long stop in Boston. There was no word from the Merchant Marine. I felt so desperate.

My close friend Jimmy called me one day and asked me how everything was going. I had to tell him the truth and he persuaded me to go back soon.

When I was four years old, I got stung(刺痛) by a bee twice in one week! After that, I had a fear of bees. When I saw bees or heard any sound from bees, I fled away immediately. That was why my parents suggested that I learn about bees instead of being frightened. I went to libraries to borrow some books about bees, and I tried to watch videos about bees, though I didn’t like them at first. And gradually, I was interested in what I read and watched. I learnt that bees could help make the food we ate because of their pollination(传授花粉). Take pizza, for example. If we didn’t have bees to pollinate(给……授粉) tomato plants, we wouldn’t have tomatoes for sauce. And we wouldn’t have cheese without pollination, either.

But, at the same time, I learnt some bad news. One was that bees were struggling to survive. Many were dying. Some scientists thought it might be because of the chemicals that were used to kill other insects. What would happen if there were no more bees? I wanted to help. I thought, “What if I make lemonade, sell it, and raise money and donate it to groups who are saving bees?” I talked to my grandmother, Helen. She was a good cook and she was supportive when she knew what my plan was. She gave me her recipe for lemonade. It came from a cookbook from 1940. She had used it herself for more than 50 years. She always made lemonade for us when we visited her at weekends. And we all liked it. Most importantly, she promised to help me make it.
