The Atlantic salmon (鲑鱼) of Scotland are hardy and determined animals. Each spring and summer, they return from the North Atlantic Ocean to lay eggs in Scotland’s shallow rivers, leaping up waterfalls and over barriers, pushing themselves upstream in enormous efforts. Some fail, and others succeed, but today they face yet another challenge.
During the mid-1980s, there were between eight and ten million salmon swimming around Scotland’s Atlantic coast; that number has now dropped sharply. There’s evidence of reducing the availability of the salmon’s prey (猎物) as climate change warms and acidifies oceans. New research suggests climate change is also bearing down on rivers, which is bad news for salmon.Adapted to life in cold water, salmon experience slow growth and population changes at high temperatures. Heat influences their health and reduces their resistance to disease.
“Now salmon are struggling to deal with the rising temperatures. There are recent records of 27°C in the upper reaches of the Dee catchment,” says Peter Cairns, director of an environmental charity. In 2018, Scotland recorded the lowest pole catch for salmon since records began. Evidence suggests that the degraded quality of river worsens the impact of our changing climate. “Atlantic salmon evolved using river systems in Scotland that were once way more forested and therefore shaded.” Yet Scotland is today one of the least wooded countries in Europe, with just 3 percent of its native woodland undamaged. Scientists have found that just 35percent of rivers in Scotland have enough tree cover for salmon survival.
A movement to get trees back on riverbanks is gathering pace. “Broad-leaf trees close tothe bank can reduce the light that enters the water,” explains fisheries scientist Anthony Hawkins. A new initiative called Riverwoods — led by the Scottish Wildlife Trust and supported by Scottish Water and several other government and regulatory bodies — aims to create a network of woodlands along Scotland’s riverbanks, and has already received a number of large funds.“Money is not the pressing business. River health is complex, but tree planting is one of the most basic things we can get started with right away,”says Cairns.

One task is to look for things to eat. While they do that, they have to avoid getting eaten! They can’t afford to ignore any dangers around them. Life is just one long game of hide-and-seek. Luckily for them, the way they look usually helps them. The zebra is a very good example.
Zebras usually travel in large groups. Imagine a hundred zebras moving together across the grassland: in Africa. Not far away, a lioness is lying on a tree branch, resting. She is waiting for her chance to attack. The zebras are getting nearer, but they’ re running very close together. Now she’s seen them, and she’s getting ready: she knows she’ll soon have a zebra to kill.
The lioness’s goal is to catch a zebra for breakfast. There is no place to hide, but the zebras have a secret line of defence; their stripes.
Lions are colour-blind. As the zebras move in a large group, it’s hard for the lioness to see which zebra to attack. All she sees is a big mass of black and white stripes. She’s not sure what to do. Breakfast must wait. The animals are always trying to hide from her.
But do zebras’ stripes cause problems for other zebras as they do for lions? No, they don’t. Actually, the purpose of the stripes in this case is to help zebras recognize each other. Every zebra has an individual pattern of stripes and zoologists believe this is how zebras know who is who in the group. A mother zebra always recognizes her child among the crowd because its stripes are just a little different from the others.
1. Why are zebras and lions mentioned?A.To give examples. | B.To make comparisons. |
C.To stress the importance of animals. | D.To encourage people to protect animals. |
A.The lioness is colour-blind. | B.The lioness is hiding from others. |
C.The lioness is afraid of the zebras. | D.The lioness is waiting for another chance. |
A.The stripes help them hide in the forest. |
B.Some zebras share the same stripe pattern. |
C.Zebras can recognize each other by their stripes. |
D.The stripes can sometimes cause problems for zebras. |
A.Hide and Seek | B.Attack and Defence |

Thanks to recent developments in biotechnology, the stuff of science fiction may soon become a reality through an attractive process called “de-extinction”, which aims to bring the extinct species back. The resurrected (复活的) species are functionally equal to the original extinct species, but they are not exact copies.
There are three primary techniques of de-extinction. One of them is that scientists deliberately select existing species with similar characters to the extinct species to produce later generation. This is a natural method. Another is cloning. A cloned animal is created by obtaining the DNA of the extinct animal. The later generation will be an identical copy of the extinct species. This is only applied to animals that are either endangered or have recently gone extinct, as it requires well-preserved eggs. The third is the newest technique, genetic engineering (基因工程). It uses gene-editing tools to place selected genes from extinct animals in place of those present in its closest living relative.
If we refer to Jurassic Park, resurrecting extinct animals is a terrible idea. Thankfully, we don’t have to worry about dinosaurs running wildly, as their DNA has disintegrated over the 65 million years since their extinction. DNA can survive for several million years at best under certain rare conditions, but does that mean we should do that?
De-extinction is more for ecology than for tourism. Ecologist Ben Novak said, “All animals perform critical roles in their ecosystem. Woolly mammoths, for example, were excellent gardeners. Their disappearance was followed by a loss in diversity and the Arctic grassland became a cold, ice field. If a resurrected animal is always going to be a zoo animal then it shouldn’t be brought back.”
1. Why does the author mention the movie Ice Age?A.To recall the joy from the movie. | B.To lead the readers into the topic. |
C.To attract readers’ attention to the movie. | D.To show functions of resurrecting animals. |
A.Its wide application. | B.Its main methods. |
C.Its complex procedures. | D.Its distinct characteristic. |
A.broken away | B.picked up | C.fallen apart | D.run out |

Do your research
You may like the look of a particular pet but that doesn’t mean it is right for you. Every pet has its own personality and certain breeds (品种) of animals often have strong traits, so think carefully about what you want from your pet and do some research before you take one on.
For example, if you work full time and you want a dog, who would take care of it during the day? If you want a cat, will it have access to outside space while you’re out during the day? Do some research on the size, temperament and exercise requirements of different pets to make sure they’re the right choice for you.
Do your sums
From everyday things like insurance, food and toys to unexpected vet bills, having a pet is certainly a financial commitment.

If you were to throw, for example, a banana peel out of your car while driving along the road, that would be a completely harmless action, because it’s part of a fruit — right? Actually, no. A banana peel can take up to two years to break down, and with a third of drivers admitting to littering while driving, that’s a whole lot of banana peel garbage mountain. An orange peel and a cigarette end have a similar biodegrading (降解) term to that of a banana, but tin and aluminium cans last up to 100 years; and plastic bottles last forever, as do glass bottles.
In spite of the fact that longer-lasting materials will serve to damage (破坏) the environment and its animals for longer, we can’t measure the harm of a certain type of rubbish only by its lifetime. For example, even with a fairly short biodegrading time, more than 120 tons of cigarette-related litter can be found in the UK every day. Similarly, our regular littering here and there has caused the UK s mouse population to increase by 60 million.
It’s not a cheap habit either: UK pays £500 million to keep our streets clean, and when you include our green spaces, that goes up to £1 billion. So, it’s not surprising that if caught fly-tipping (倾倒垃圾) you could face a £20,000 fine or even jail time. In spite of how heavy these punishments might seem, however, among the reported cases only 2,000 were convicted (定罪) out of 825,000, so we still have some way to go.
1. It can be ________ for a cigarette end to break down.A.2 years | B.50 years | C.100 years | D.forever |
A.Because rubbish has damaged the environment. | B.Because most rubbish has a long time to break down. |
C.Because there are too much cigarette related rubbish. | D.Because mouses can feed on much food rubbish. |
A.2,000 people were put into jail for littering | B.UK spent £1 billion in building green spaces |
C.many people who littered escaped punishment | D.you form the habit of littering easily in the UK |
A.Sharp climate change in recent years. | B.Increase of mouse and pest population. |

They took a 31.8% part together of the total global new leaf area between 2000 and 2017. China played a major role, adding 25% to this increase, and India added 6.8%, followed by Canada and Russia. The study in the Nature Sustainability journal shows that more than 5.5 million square kilometers of green leaf area was added globally. Since 2000, there has been a five-percent increase in global green cover, it said.
“The greening over the last twenty years shows an increase in leaf area on plants and trees which is as large as the area of the entire Amazon rainforest," Chi Chen, a Boston University researcher and lead of the study told Nature Sustainability. Large plantation activities to protect forests in China contributed nearly 42% to the country's green cover, and agriculture added another 32%. In India, 82% of the increase in leaf area was because of agriculture.
“China and India take up one-third of the greening, but hold only nine percent of the planet's land area covered in green plants," Chi Chen told NASA Earth Observatory. “That is a surprising finding, considering the land degradation(退化) in countries with large populations.”
Boston University's research team first detected an increase in global green cover in the 1990s but were unsure about what contributed to the increase. Finally, with the help of NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites research, they managed to find out the increase in leaf cover from different areas and places.
1. Which country increased the largest part of the new leaf area?A.India | B.China |
C.Canada | D.Russia |
A.To show how great the achievement was. |
B.To show the importance of rainforest. |
C.To explain what difficulties we have now. |
D.To explain the reason for increasing forests. |
A.China and India have large populations and land degradation problem |
B.about 9% of the planet’s greening is in China and India |
C.China and India are leading in the global green cover increase |
D.the leaf cover area in China and India is still limited if viewed globally |

Last month, GWS Living Art, a company specializing in urban green structures installed (安装) green roofs on 10 public buses. While a bus might not seem like the typical location for a green roof, the installation could provide environmental and economic benefits. According to research by Michigan State University, green roofs are great at reducing polluting emissions, providing spaces for nature and cooling cities through the water that evaporates (蒸发) from their leaves and by shading surfaces that would otherwise absorb heat.
“While the impact of green plants on buildings has been well documented, much less is known about the effects of them on moving vehicles,” said Tan Chun Liang, a research fellow at National University of Singapore who advises the “Garden on the Move” bus campaign. This bus campaign is part of a three-month study to test whether green plants can help lower the temperature inside the buses and reduce the amount of fuel needed to power the air-conditioning. Liang hopes the research will provide a possible solution for cities to fight against global warming and the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect -- when a city experiences much warmer temperatures than nearby rural areas, due to the heat produced and absorbed by industry, traffic and building materials.
To make Singapore a “Garden City,” the government has joint this bus campaign with other green projects such as the Green Mark Scheme which aims for 80% of building to be green by 2030 and Gardens by the Bay, an eco-friendly garden featuring solar-powered “supertrees” and over 1.5 million plants.

However, a great number of comets are found by comet hunters carrying out telescope searches of chosen areas of the night sky.
As the movement of all comets is directed around the Sun and because these bodies brighten as they move towards the Sun, there is a greater possibility for the discovery of a new comet in the skies towards the Sun rather than away from the Sun's direction. This means that searches should be put on the western sky after evening light and on the eastern sky before morning light.
From the astronomical point there is no time during the year which is the best for the discovery of new comets. A search can be done at any time providing there is no bright Moon.
Studies done on the discovery conditions of comets discovered before show that more comets have been discovered in the morning sky than in the evening sky. Thus the smart comet hunter should make sure that morning activity receives as much if not more attention than any evening effort.
In recent times, the use of advanced CCD technology to discover objects close to the Earth will in the future greatly reduce the chances of new comets being found with small telescopes. An example of the new technology is the very successful LINEAR program operating in New Mexico, However, until a similar system is based in the southern half of the Earth there will continue to be chances for the discovery of new comets which come from the south.
1. What are comet hunters advised to do?A.Look away from the Sun. |
B.Stay where there's bright light. |
C.Face the western sky in the daytime. |
D.Turn to the east in the early morning. |
A.Days when they're close to the Earth are great chances. |

C.Being more relaxed in the morning than in the afternoon. |
D.Forming a habit of working only in the morning. |

He’s a lively and clever young boy, and he finds himself in many exciting adventures. He runs away with his two friends, Huck Finn and Joe, to an island in the middle of the Mississippi River for several days. With Huck he goes looking for treasure, with Becky he gets lost in a cave. And finally, they find a box of gold.
My favourite scene in the book is when everyone thinks Tom is dead. He decides to go to his own funeral(葬礼). He hides and watches for a time and then suddenly he appears. Everyone is surprised to see him but they’re also pleased to see him alive.
Tom is the hero of the story, but there are other important characters. Huck is an outsider and everyone is afraid of him. Becky is pretty with fair hair, Joe is Tom’s best friend. And Injun Joe is the bad man of the story.
The theme of the story is about children growing up. It describes how strangers are seen in small towns of America. Finally, it talks about freedom, social rules and how people are punished for bad behaviour.
Why do I think The Adventure of Tom Sawyer is a great book? Mark Twain wrote the story in 1876, but it’s still read and loved by people all over the world today. And although it’s only a story, Twain wrote it in the everyday English of the southern states of America in the 19th century, so it sounds very real. Today its thought to be one of the greatest books in American literature. Go on-read it! I know you’ll enjoy it, too.
1. Where does Tom run away with his two friends?A.To a quiet street. | B.To a small town. | C.To an island. | D.To a forest. |
A.Huck Finn. | B.Joe. | C.Becky. | D.Polly. |
A.They were surprised and happy. |
B.They were surprised and sad. |

【推荐3】Living a healthy lifestyle contains making choices about the foods we eat as well as exercise and other daily activities. The term “healthy lifestyle” can be defined as “to improve and protect one’s health and well-being”.
For this purpose, a healthy lifestyle can involve good eating habits, regular physical activity and anti-alcoholism.
First of all, good eating habits are the main way of living a healthy lifestyle. For instance, rushed morning routines, trying to lose weight, and lack of appetite(食欲)early in the morning are all reasons why people skip breakfast(不吃早餐). However, most experts think that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Another example is fast food; a hamburger from McDonald’s with special sauce and cheese is not exactly considered as a healthy meal. Our society today is busy and on the go at all times. It is much easier to stop and get fast food. As a result, humans become fatter. However, eating low-fat meals that include 5 to 9 serving of fruits and vegetables every day is an ideal healthy life plan. Therefore, good eating habits are the main way of living a healthy lifestyle.
Secondly, another way of living a healthy lifestyle is physical activity. Exercise is indeed part of life because it keeps the body and mind in good shape. Exercise reduces stress and contributes to(有助于)a good sleep. It can keep a person looking and feeling younger throughout his entire life, and it also helps build one’s energy and strength. So, physical activity is another way of living a healthy lifestyle.
Finally, another way is anti-alcoholism. Addiction to alcohol may cause serious social and public problems. It is accepted that driving after drinking is dangerous. Alcohol is a main factor of traffic deaths. Alcoholism can also lead to diseases, such as heart attack or liver trouble. Thus, anti-alcoholism is another way for a healthy lifestyle.
In conclusion, a healthy lifestyle can be maintained in three ways: the first way is good eating habits, the second way is regular physical activity and the final way is anti-alcoholism.
1. The underlined sentence in the first paragraph probably means ______.A.having more food will help you to be more healthy |
B.a healthy lifestyle only refers to healthy eating habits |
C.a healthy lifestyle is a way of living to keep one’s health |
D.to be healthy, you must make choices about anything |
A.it’s not healthy to skip breakfast | B.the hamburger is a healthy food |
C.we should eat only low-fat foods | D.many people think breakfast is not important |
A.By avoiding fast food. | B.By taking regular exercise. |
C.By being happy every day. | D.By wearing some special clothes. |
A.Good eating habits. | B.Anti-alcoholism. |
C.Physical activity. | D.Losing weight. |
A.Advertisement. | B.Economy. | C.Sports. | D.Life. |
