Have you ever said to yourself “I’ll do it tomorrow“?     1    When people delay action or put off decisions in this way, we call it procrastination. Sometimes it can be a good time management strategy to “do it later, ” especially if we are tired or waiting for something to make the job easier. However, procrastination is actually more than just practical time management.

Procrastination happens when a person has difficulty managing negative emotions, such as anxiety, boredom, and stress. It is very easy for procrastination to become a habit, and many people try hard to break away from the cycle of guilt and shame that it can create.     2     Here is some useful advice to help us deal with it:

Use a calendar

Planning out time for everything you want to do will help you stay organized.     3     This can allow you extra time in case an emergency occurs.

Break big projects into small pieces

4     So it’s better to take things step by step. “Do the housework“ sounds like a big task, but if you begin with “do the dishes” and then move on to “do the laundry, ” it might not seem so hard.

Reward and forgive yourself

People get caught up in being perfect.     5     If you provide a small reward at the end of a project, it can help you finish what you start. Also, it will give you something to look forward to. Even when you don’t succeed, remember to be kind to yourself. When you’re ready, try again!

A.And have you ever said that three or four days in a row?
B.Procrastination is a serious problem for students and office workers.
C.This can really get in the way of finishing a task.
D.It can be challenging to think about how much there is to do.
E.You can avoid procrastination by pushing a deadline up to get ahead of schedule.
F.The good news is that it can be managed with some willpower and help.
G.How often do you put off what you should do today until tomorrow?

【推荐1】When you are away from home, eating is more than just a way to keep your stomach full.    1    There is no better way to say, “Glad to meet you ... glad to be doing business with you ...”

Clearly, mealtime is not the time for you to say “Thanks, but no thanks.”When you are in a foreign country, saying yes to the food on your plate is important.     2    That's why most experienced travelers try to eat everything everywhere, even if the dish looks strange.

What would people in the United States think of a visitor who didn’t want to try a bite of homemade apple pie or a steak? What would they think of a guest who didn't want to taste a lobster (龙虾)? A lobster, for example, may remind people of something from a science fiction movie, not something you eat with melted butter. We often feel uncomfortable with food that we are unfamiliar with.     3    For instance, sheep's eyeballs may be unfamiliar in some parts of the world, but in Saudi Arabia, they are a delicacy (佳肴).

4     Most experienced business travelers say no. You should at least take a few bites. It helps, though, to cut things into very thin slices. This way, you won't notice the texture (口感) or remember where it came from. Or “Swallow it quickly,” as one traveler recommends.

Another useful piece of advice is this: It's better if you don't know what you are eating.    5    Avoid glancing into the kitchen or looking at restaurant menus. Your host will be very happy because you are eating the food that he or she offers.

A.Don't ask what's for dinner.
B.Eat all the food on your plate.
C.It is impolite to stare at restaurant menus.
D.Can you refuse such food without being rude?
E.Sharing a meal with others is a kind of communication.
F.It means that you accept the host, the county, and the company.
G.However, food that seems strange in one culture may be a favorite food in another.

【推荐2】How to Beat the Afternoon Slump and Regain Your Focus

It’s 3 pm, and the very last thing you want to do is work. You are so tired that you could go back to bed.     1     It’s called the afternoon slump, and people across the world deal with it every day. It can be a killer for your motivation and productivity. The following techniques may help overcome the afternoon slump.

Grab a Healthy Snack

If you’re feeling tired, try giving your body some energy with a healthy snack. Sugary, prepackaged snacks seem to be a good choice because they provide you with a quick hit of energy. But after this boost of energy, you’ll quickly experience a “sugar crash”.     2     Therefore, try something that has a balance of protein and healthy fats instead.

Get Some Exercise

One of the quickest ways to increase your energy is to do some exercise. If you’ve been sitting at your desk all day, then getting your blood pumping (涌流) can give you the boost you need to continue your work.     3     Some simple ways to add physical activity to your day can work wonders, such as taking a walk and dancing to your favorite song.

    4

Our final piece of advice isn’t a specific action, but rather a larger change in the way you work. If you know that you’re going to have less energy in the afternoon, try to use that time for tasks that require less energy. For instance, I prefer to do my most creative and high-energy work in the morning and lower energy tasks like processing email in the afternoon.     5

While you can’t beat the afternoon slump completely, you can take steps to regain the energy and focus you need to stay productive even in the face of tiredness.

A.Schedule Your Work Around Your Energy
B.Do Less Demanding Tasks to Keep Energetic
C.If you’ve experienced this feeling, you’re not alone.
D.It means that you may feel even more tired than before.
E.For maximum effectiveness, combine the exercise with healthy snacks.
F.With this approach, you can anticipate the afternoon slum and arrange your work.
G.The specific exercise doesn’t really matter, and it doesn’t have to be long or complicated.

【推荐3】Five tiny tips that can improve your to-do list

Is there a more effective way to write my to-do list? Here are five surprising and useful tips.

1    . “If it takes less than two minutes, just do it right then and there,” says Angel Trinidad. It’s not worth the bandwidth to write it down, remember it and do it.

Automate (使…自动化) what you can. If you find yourself writing “buy more dog food”on your to-do list every few weeks, save yourself the effort of adding it to your to-do list by signing up for a subscription to get the food delivered to your house each month.     2    .

Break each task into smaller pieces. People aren’t specific enough when they write down items on their to-do lists. For example, I want to retile my kitchen floor. That’s not a to-do list item because there are too many steps packed into one big goal.     3    , like “call hardware store for an estimate” or “pick out tile (瓦片).”

Decide what’s a priority.     4    : Take one of your existing to-do list tasks and ask “why” repeatedly — at least five times. For example, why do I want to retile my kitchen floor? To make my apartment look better. Why? Because a beautiful space makes me feel more at peace.

Try assigning(分配)a task to a time of day. Take a look at your daily schedule and figure out when you can get your tasks done. For example, you might write your novel from 11 a. m. to 2 p. m., grocery shop from 2 p. m. — 3:30 p.m.     5    . That kind of awareness gets you thinking, am I spending my time in a way that makes sense for me?

A.Follow the two-minute rule
B.Include big life goals on your to-do list
C.There is a trick for deciding what’s important
D.You can also use it to reach your big-picture goals
E.Instead, break the project into smaller action items
F.It can narrow down how much you can handle in a day
G.That can leave space on your list for more important tasks
