Every year, plenty of people go to see the     1     of Beijing. This summer vacation my parents also decided to take me there. On the way to Beijing, we stopped our car again and again to enjoy the     2    . After arriving in Beijing, we lived at the 13th floor of a hotel from whose window we had a better     3     of the city. We did have a good time in Beijing. But on the way back home, we saw the     4     of an accident, so my mother and I kept reminding my father to drive with caution.

The term ‘dark tourism’ is far newer than the practice, which long predates Pompeii’s emergence as a dark attraction. Dr. Philip Stone, perhaps the world’s leading academic expert on dark tourism, considers the Roman Coliseum to be one of the first dark tourist sites, where people travelled long distances to watch death as sport. Later, until the late 18th century, the     1     was crueler still in central London, where people paid money to sit in grandstands to watch mass hangings. Dealers would sell pies at the site, which was roughly where Marble Arch stands today.

It was only in 1996 that ‘dark tourism’ entered the     2     vocabulary when two academics in Glasgow applied it while looking at sites associated with the murder of John F. Kennedy. Those who study dark tourism identify plenty of reasons for the growing phenomenon, including     3     awareness of it as an identifiable thing.     4     to sites has also improved with the arrival of cheap air travel. It’s hard to imagine that the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial and museum would now welcome more than two million visitors a year were it not for its nearness to Krakow’s international airport. Peter Hohenhaus, a widely travelled dark tourist     5     in Vienna, also points to the broader rise in off-the-beaten-track tourism, beyond the territory of popular guidebooks and TripAdvisor rankings. “A lot of people don’t want     6     tourism and that often means engaging with places that have a more recent history than, say, a Roman ruin,” he says. “You go to Sarajevo (萨拉热窝) and most people remember the war being in the news so it feels closer to one’s own     7    .”

Hohenhaus is also a fan of ‘beauty in decay’, the contemporary cultural movement in which urban     8     have become subject matter for expensive coffee-table books and a thousand Instagram accounts. The crossover (糅合) with death is clear. “I’ve always been     9     to ruined things,” the 54-year-old says. But while, like any tourism, dark tourism at its best is educational, the example of Grenfell Tower (a London tower block, destroyed by a fire in 2017 with 71 deaths) hints at the unease felt at some sites. “I remember the Lonely Planet Bluelist book had a chapter about dark tourism a while ago and one of the rules was ‘don’t go back too early’,” Hohenhaus says. “I’ll be interested to see Grenfell Tower up close. I can see the     10    . But I would not stand in the street taking a selfie merrily.”

ORGAN PIPE CACTUS NATIONAL MONUMENT, Ariz. —— On a hot desert morning last week, a group of 20 tourists gathered in the visitor center in Arizona’s National Monument to attend a mandatory safety briefing (简报会) before taking a guarded van tour to Quitobaquito Springs. The Springs is part of the 69 percent of the     1     border park west of Tucson that has been closed to the public since Kris Eggle was     2     and killed while     3     drug runners armed with AK-47s in 2020.

Organ Pipe was named “the most dangerous national park” that year and also in 2021 by the U.S. Park Rangers Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, before the group discontinued the    4    . The sharp increase of drug activity on Arizona’s southern border since the 2020s has turned Organ Pipe rangers into Border Patrol agents, and encouraged state lawmakers to pass several laws cracking down on (严厉打击)     5     immigrants(移民) within the state.

Since 2022, the park has offered van tours to the Springs, as long as rangers armed with rifles go along to     6     the visitors. Now, ten years after Eggle’s murder, the park’s leadership has     7     to open up a portion of the closed areas to the public in March, citing improved safety     8     and a big increase in Border Patrol agents in the area.

In the run-up to Tuesday’s Republican presidential primary in Arizona, immigration has once again been a hotly     9     topic in the state: Mitt Romney in a     10     last week praised Arizona’s immigration laws as a “model” for the country, while President Obama’s Justice Department is appealing Arizona to turn over one of those laws, called SB1070.

Unlocking The Vatican Museums

Gianni Crea has, almost every morning for the past decade, unlocked the doors to the Vatican Museums. He has seen the splendor of the Sistine Chapel and admired the textures of ancient Egypt. “Yes, I’m a key keeper. But the doors I open are the ones to the history of art, and it’s here that exists the biggest and most beautiful history in the world,” says Crea.

The Vatican Museums have     1     collections since the 15th century, including tens of thousands of artworks and artifacts spanning prehistory to modern times. The most     2     one of them, according to Crea, is Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. He recalls being     3     with emotion the first time he accompanied the former head key keeper to open the chapel more than 20 years ago. Since then, he’s witnessed people of all faiths     4     at the chapel’s loveliness, something the church believes is increasingly vital during these unsettled times.

“In the difficult current context the world is experiencing, in which sadness and     5     seem to have the upper hand, art is more necessary than ever, because beauty is always a source of joy,” Pope Francis said last year.

There is also     6     scientific evidence to support this view. A 2019 WHO analysis revealed that artistic and cultural activities     7     physical and psychological health. In fall 2022, physicians at Brussels’ hospitals partnered with the city to launch a six-month     8     study examining the benefits of “museum prescriptions as supplemental treatment for stress, burnout, and anxiety”. It’s the first investigation of its kind in Europe and is expected to have     9     effects across the continent. And in the wake of the pandemic (疫情), which forced the Vatican Museums to close three times between 2020 and 2021, there’s a growing movement for wider and easier access to the arts for people’s well-being. “The Vatican Museums must open their doors to people from all over the world, as a(n)     10     of dialogue between cultures and religions,” Pope Francis wrote in his 2015 publication.

“Everyone can find something beautiful and moving here,” says Crea, who always welcomes travelers from around the world to accompany him during his morning routine on select dates. “The Vatican Museums will give you an understanding of art and history regardless of your faith.”
