Joan excitedly packed her bags for her upcoming trip with her family. They were going to drive from New York to Virginia to visit relatives. She could not wait. She had missed playing with her cousins and talking to her aunt and uncle.

After all of the suitcases had been loaded into the car, Joan’s dad looked to Joan and her mother. “Is everyone ready for our road trip?” They both grinned (露齿而笑) and nodded.

It was going to be quite a long journey, and within a couple of hours Joan had already begun to feel tired. She began to nod off when she noticed that the car began to veer (突然变向) to the side of the road.

Joan’s father got out and walked around the car. He scratched his head, looking confused. Then, he gave a great sigh. He poked his head through the passenger side window. “We have a flat tire,” he said to Joan’s mom.

“Use the spare tire in the trunk. Then we can replace it when we reach Virginia,” she suggested. Joan’s father looked down at his feet sheepishly (羞怯地). “I ... haven’t had the spare tire replaced since the last time we had a flat.”

Her mother seemed frustrated (沮丧), but tried to remain positive. “Maybe we can call a service,” she suggested.

But a quick glance at their cellphones told them that there was no reception in the area. Joan looked at her mother in the front seat, and her father still staring blankly (茫然地) at the flat tire outside. Both of them looked concerned.

Joan began to get worried. No other cars had passed by in a while and it seemed like they were far away from a town center.

Joan looked out the window, wondering if they would have to sleep in the car or if there was any way they could possibly find someone to help them. Would they ever make their way to Virginia? Her relatives would surely be worried about them.

Facing the heavy snowfall and thick layers of ice on the road, David was rushing to get to another city. He had little choice. He was heading there for a job interview as he needed a second job to be able to afford a good lawyer for himself, for he had recently been stuck in a legal battle about his house. Afraid of losing the chance, David risked his life and decided to drive miles away in a snowstorm to another city where the interview was.

However, as he approached the crossing, David suddenly came to a stop. He saw a little girl appear terrified with fear. David knew he’d most likely miss the interview, but he couldn’t leave the young girl alone in the heavy snowstorm, so he got off his van and asked what was the matter. “My mommy is in danger! Can you please help us?” she cried, “Mommy is just so hurt, and I am so scared and so cold!”

David took off his coat and placed it on the girl’s shoulders. “Can you take me to your mommy?” he asked. “I can call the ambulance and help her.” The little girl nodded, pointing her finger away. So, after rescuing the 5 years old girl named Mia from the snowstorm, David took her to his van, and through her directions, a mile later, he noticed a car crashed into a pole. Before getting out, David called 911. Then he dashed to the car, where he discovered Mia’s mother, unconscious and severely injured in the driver’s seat.

David helped her out of the car and onto the van. When 911 arrived, he locked his van and accompanied Mia and her mother to the hospital. Thankfully, a couple of hours later, he received word from the doctors that Mia’s mother, Laura, had regained consciousness and was out of danger.

“Wow, these trees are so tall!” William shouted excitedly, while walking with his classmates in a forest near his school. They were on a field trip to the forest as part of a science lesson.

Over there, they met the forester (护林人), Victor. When William learned Victor lived in a simple wooden house there for years, he laughed at him with his friends.

Then, they passed by an entrance to a cave. William wanted to explore inside the cave, but his teacher didn’t allow it. “I’ll come back here,” he thought. On the way back to school, he remembered the exact location of the cave.

The next day, William asked his four friends to the cave together. They told their parents they would go to the library and return home in the evening. None of the teenagers told their parents about their plan to visit the cave.

When the teenagers reached the cave, they left their school bags outside to reduce the burden. One by one, they entered the cave. Just when they took a few steps inside, some rocks from the cave wall fell and blocked the entrance.

“How are we going to get out now?” one of the teenagers Sarah shouted. William had an idea and said, “Maybe we can try digging through the fallen rocks with our hands to reach the entrance.” But realizing getting out of the cave only by their hands was impossible, they had great fear. The sun was about to go down. The teenagers started calling for help, but nobody could hear them. The teenagers were losing hope.

Victor happened to pass by the entrance to the cave, and five school bags caught his attention. He also heard some sounds coming from inside the cave. “Who’s in there?” Victor shouted.

“I’m William! We came here yesterday with our teacher!” William replied instantly.

“Help us, please! We are stuck! Sarah can’t breathe here because of fear.”

“Okay, calm down, children!” Victor said. “I’ll help you get out!”

Tomorrow-represents hope

Every day, on the way to and from school I passed by a children’s hospital. One morning, as I was hurrying to school, I noticed a child staring out of a small window on the first floor. The next minute I accidentally tripped, leaving my feet in the air. As I slowly pulled myself up and dusted myself off, I looked up again and saw the child laughing. In spite of my situation, I was pleased to have made someone laugh. I bowed as though I were a performer. The child clapped and waved at me, As I stepped closer, I saw that the girl’s head was bald (光秃的), a sign that she was a cancer patient. I quickly waved one last time to her before making my way to school.

The next morning and the next, I looked out for the little girl and waved to her, jigging (蹦跳) just to make her laugh. I thought about her and wondered what her life must be like. “Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow, Creeps (爬行) in this petty pace from day to day.” Those lines from a Shakespearean poem I had learned in school came to my mind. Was that how the child lived from day to day?

I felt the urge to visit the child. I went to the hospital and looked for the room facing the road. I found the little girl. She was thin and pale. When she saw me, her eyes widened with recognition and she welcomed me with a shy smile. I talked to her a bit and learned her name, Suki. The nurse who saw me talking to her later told me that Suki was a leukemia patient. Her navy officer father was a single parent and was on duty outside the country. The nurse encouraged me to visit Suki so that she would not be so lonesome. As I was leaving, Suki called tome, “Tomorrow?” I understood and said, “Yes, tomorrow.”
