A New Viewing Platform at Camley Street Natural Park
There’s a new viewing platform added to Camley Street Natural Park. The platform is designed to bring architecture (建筑) and nature close together. It is a peaceful place to relax and helps people discover nature, especially wildlife. You’ll have a look at kinds of birds if you’re lucky.
The foundation
The platform is founded with the help of the New Architects: Finland UK Exchange Program, which brings together new architectural talents from Finland and the UK to explore cities’ ever-changing relationship with water.
The Design
The platform is designed by a team of young Finnish architects. The inspiration comes from the rocky islands off the Nordic coastline. For Finns, these islands are places to relax the mind and get away from busy city life. The platform offers Londoners a chance to experience this escape.
To find out more about the inspiration for the design, please visit www.viewpointlondon.fi/.
The Extra Use
The platform is also an important new learning base for Camley Street Natural Park. It will be used as an outdoor classroom and a place to host workshops for school children. It will give children views of the canal and other wildlife and a chance of getting close to nature.
Local schools can contact here to learn more.

Hotel Reservations and Accommodation | Upon arrival at the airport, please visit its 24-hour hotel reservations counters, which can help get you a room in your preferred hotel. Payment for the first night is required upon confirmation. |
Lost Passport/Singapore Immigration Services | Should you lose your passport, we suggest you make a police report, then head to the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority to get a temporary visa. Finally, inform your respective embassy so that you can get through customs when you reach home. |
Tipping | Tipping is not a common practice in Singapore as most hotels and restaurants include a 10% service charge in the final bill. While tipping is not expected, it is appreciated, be it in restaurants where there is no service charge, or anywhere where excellent service is provided. |
Smoking | If you are a smoker, you will have to resist the urge to light up in air-conditioned areas such as shopping centres, restaurants, entertainment outlets and cinemas. She left London airport early on the morning of the first Saturday in August. She was very excited, as this was her first trip abroad. When she arrived at Barcelona airport, the weather was beautiful.
At the hotel, she found that her Spanish money wasn’t in her handbag. All she had was a small purse with ten English pounds in it!
Ann found a place to change her English money for Spanish money. She would stay here for two weeks. After changing her money, Ann bought some cheese, some bread and some oranges. When she got back to the hotel, she told the tour guide that her doctor had told her not to eat much food, so she’d just have breakfast each day. This was all right, as she knew breakfast was included in the price of hotel.
For the rest of her holiday, Ann swam in the hotel or lay on the beach. She also went for long walks with Jane, a Scottish girl. However, when the others went to interesting places, Ann always said she wasn’t well. In fact, her holiday wasn’t bad, except that she was always hungry.
On the last day, Jane asked her why she never ate with them in the hotel restaurant. The food was excellent. Ann told her all about her money problem. Jane looked at her for a minute, and then said, “But didn’t you know? The price of this tour includes everything!”
1. Why was Ann so excited about the trip?A.Because she had never been abroad. |
B.Because she had saved enough money. |
C.Because she had booked a cheap tour. |
D.Because she had found a good job. |
A.She didn’t find her purse. |
B.She couldn’t find a place to change money. |
C.She couldn’t find her Spanish money. |
D.She didn’t understand Spanish. |
A.she wanted to see a doctor. |
B.she doubted the price of the hotels. |
C.she had bought some food for her meals. |
D.she would only take breakfast. |
A.Ann was not allowed to eat much. |
B.Ann’s Spanish money was stolen. |
C.Ann missed some meals included in the tour. |
D.Ann didn’t like the restaurant and the holiday. |

Andrew Zimmern from Bizarre Foods once said, “Please be a traveler, not a tourist. Try new things, meet new people, and look beyond what’s right in front of you. Those are the keys to understanding this amazing world we live in.” The idea here is that travelers are better at exploring the world than tourists. They dig deep into the culture, drink it up, and get to know a place while a tourist takes pictures and declares to have “done Paris.”
But that’s wrong, we are all tourists.
On the road, backpackers love to talk about how real their travels are and how unreal tourists are. “Look at those tourists over there,” they say. They scoff at others who travel too quickly or to places that they think are not well worth visiting. Nevertheless, they do so while eating hamburgers and drinking beers with other travelers.
The only way to really get to know a place deeply is to live there. If you want to live like a local, find an apartment, get a job, go to work, and do the same things as you did back home.
We are all only passing through a culture, getting a small taste before moving on to the next place. Even if we stay weeks or months, we’re just getting in touch with the surface. As a matter of fact, we are all really just tourists, or explorers, or travelers. Call yourself whatever you want—it’s all the same as we’re all trying to do the same thing—see the world.
So don’t label anyone and don’t let anyone label you. We’re all tourists. We’re all travelers. What we are all doing is more important than what we call ourselves. Let’s just enjoy the fact that we are simply people on the road.
1. The purpose of Andrew Zimmern’s words in Paragraph 2 is to ________.A.present amazing experiences | B.tell travelers from tourists |
C.get to know different people | D.give an example of misunderstanding |
A.laugh at | B.model after |
C.take notice of | D.agree with |
A.They live like locals while traveling. |
B.They have a brief experience of places. |
C.They enjoy tasty food on the way. |
D.They like calling themselves explorers. |
A.Explore deep into cultures. |
B.Make a detailed trip schedule. |
C.Just enjoy the trip on the road. |
D.Simply be more a traveller than a tourist |

These piles of stones are some of the earliest known manmade structures in the world. They are showing their age a bit but what would you expect for buildings that are five and a half thousand years old. My house was built in the year 2000 and is already in bad condition round the edges. These temples are older than the pyramids!
In my opinion the temples are best seen after the visitors have left. Come with me for a late afternoon walk down the hill past Hagar Qim towards the Mnajdra Complex. There are chain link fences around the temples now but we can ignore those and try to image why Maltas earliest people went to the trouble of building these structures on this windy and poor hillside.
Of course the temples would have looked rather different when they were constructed. They may have been decorated with pigments and possibly even roofed with animal skins or other materials. Who knows? We do know that they were changed and added to over a 1,000 - year period or so.
Getting to Mnajdra and Hagar Qim is easiest if you have a car. Or if you don’t mind a hike, you could get a bus to Qrendi(3 km away) or Zurrieq (5 km away) and walk from there. Warning: although the distances are not too great, walking several kilometers in the Maltese sun can be very hard and possibly dangerous. Take water and sunscreen.
1. What makes the writer wonder about the temples?A.Their history. | B.Their appearance. |
C.How they were built. | D.When they were built. |
A.They have been transformed. | B.They look the same as before. |
C.They were carefully designed. | D.They are not what they used to be. |
A.By hiking there. | B.By riding a car. |
C.By taking water. | D.By taking a bus. |
A.In a political speech. | B.In a historical fiction. |
C.Ina travel magazine. | D.In a geography text book. |

Now we come to Hanwengong Shrine, which is beside Hangjiang river and west of Bijia mountain.
In the year of A.D. 819, for some political reason, Han Yu was exiled (流放) to Chaozhou, a backland at that time. But he was not depressed by this, and he helped local people to develop education, agriculture, irrigation and release slaves.
The shrine was built against the mountain and divided into two parts, the front part and the back part. Now we play a small game: count the stone steps, and later I’ll tell you a secret. How many steps are there? Yes, 51 steps! Why?
A.When Han Yu came to Chaozhou, he was 51 years old. |
B.Han Yu was a Confucian figure, and there are many stories about him in Chaozhou. |
C.Although Han Yu’s ideas had no obvious practical effect at the time, they had a great impact on society decades later. |
D.Built in the Song dynasty, the shrine is the oldest and best preserved monument to Han Yu, one of the greatest literary men in the Tang dynasty. |
E.To memorize what he had contributed to the development of Chaozhou, people constructed this shrine and named him Hanwengong respectfully. |
F.There are so many tourists that, to relieve the pressure on the monuments, the scenic spot requires that a maximum of 500 people visit at a time. |

King Tutankhamen lived more than 3,000 years ago. He ruled ancient Egypt for 10 years, until his death at age 19. “King Tut” remained practically unknown in the modern world until 1922, when scientists discovered his tomb, buried and forgotten for centuries. The treasures inside gave the world the first detailed picture of ancient Egyptian life.
The ancient Egyptians worshipped(崇拜) many gods. They also believed that all people had a life spirit, called “ka” that needed a place to live after the body died. Tombs inside huge pyramids protected the pharaohs'(法老) ka. The ka could also exist in portrait sculptures like the one of a seated Hatshepsut. The wife of a pharaoh, Hatshepsut took on the role of king after her husband died. Carved from limestone, this Life-size sculpture shows the life force of Hatshepsut's ka. The artist suggests Hatshepsut's strength by placing her feet firmly on the ground and resting her hands on her knees in a firm, powerful pose.
Viewers are meant to look at the sculpture of Hatshepsut from a frontal angle only. But artist Thutmose created his portrait of Queen Nefertiti as a sculpture in the round, meaning viewers should observe it from many points of view. The work is a highly realistic portrait of a queen who ruled beside her husband, a pharaoh. Painted with delicate(精细的) features, the impressive colors in her portrait resemble the makeup Nefertiti probably wore in life.
Long before any of these portraits were created, a huge creature with a lion's body and a human head stood guarding in Egypt's Valley of the Kings. No one knows who created the Great Sphinx, or why, but it is said to resemble an early pharaoh. Carved out of solid rock on a larger-than-life scale, it is possibly the oldest and most imposing portrait in the world.
1. The artist presents Hatshepsut's strength mainly through the ________ of the sculpture.A.gesture | B.material |
C.color | D.size |
A.imaginative | B.lifelike |
C.threatening | D.abstract |
A.a king of animals |
B.a guard as brave as a lion |
C.a portrait of an early pharaoh |
D.a creature owned by a pharaoh |
A.The oldest selfie in the world. |
B.Some powerful kings in Egypt. |
C.Some portraits of kings in some countries. |
D.Some portrait sculptures of ancient Egyptian rulers. |
