Here’s a list of books I’m looking forward to reading this fall.
Home After Dark by David Small
In 2009, Small published a celebrated graphic memoir (回忆录) called “Stitches”. Now the Caldecott Medal winner is back with a graphic novel about a motherless 13-year-old boy brought up in an unhappy home in California. This is a tale told in few words and many striking images. It is published by Liveright. On Sept 11 at 3 pm, Small will be at Amazon Books at Union Market.
Waiting for Eden by Ellion Ackerman
This brief novel, which is published by Knopf, is related by a dead soldier who is watching over a horribly burned partner in a Texas hospital. That sounds embarrassingly emotional, but Ackerman, who served in a navy in Iraq and Afghanistan, is one of the best soldier writers of his generation.
All You Can Ever Know by Nicole Chung
Chung, the editor of the literary magazine Catapult, was adopted as a baby by a family in Oregon. In this memoir, she writes about her childhood, her Asian-American identity and her search for the Korean parents who gave her up. It is published by Catapult.
Unsheltered by Barbara Kingsolver
Alternating between past and present, this novel tells the story of a woman investigating a late-19th-century science teacher who was caught up in the controversy (公开争论) over Darwinism. Like her other novels, this one promises to explore social and scientific problems. This book comes from the publishing house named Harper.

The Pillow
At the age of sixteen, I joined a volunteer group with my dad. I went on my first volunteer project in West Virginia. On the night we arrived, we discovered that “our family” was living in a trailer(拖车) that was in poor condition. A crew had been working on it for two weeks, but every time they finished one problem, another surfaced.
We decided the only reasonable solution was to build a new house — something unusual but necessary under these circumstances. The family was overjoyed with their new house that was twenty by thirty feet with three bedrooms, a bath and a kitchen.
On Tuesday of that week, while we ate lunch together, I asked the family’s three boys, Josh, Eric and Ryan, “What do you want for your new room?” Expecting toys and other gadgets that children usually ask for, we were surprised when Josh responded, “I just want a bed.”
The boys had never slept in a bed! They were accustomed to plastic mats. That night we had a meeting and decided that beds would be the perfect gift. On Thursday night, a few adults in our group drove to the nearest city and bought beds and new bedding.
When we saw the delivery truck coming, we told the family about the surprise. We could hardly contain ourselves. It was like watching excited children on Christmas morning.
That afternoon, as we fitted the frames of the beds together, Eric ran into the house to watch us. Too dirty to enter his room, he observed with wide-eyed enthusiasm from the doorway.
As my father slipped a pillowcase onto one of the pillows, Eric asked, “What is that?”
“A pillow,” he replied.
“What do you do with it?” Eric continued to ask.
“When you go to sleep, you put your head on it,” I answered softly. Tears came to our eyes as she handed Eric the pillow.
“Oh . . . that’s soft,” he said, hugging it tightly.
Now, when my sister or I start to ask for something that seems urgent, my Dad gently asks, “Do you have a pillow?”
We know exactly what he means.

It’s true that consuming(消耗)fewer fats can help you get in shape sooner, but low fat foods like dried fruits, nuts, beans, etc, actually contain high amounts of calories. For example, fruit juice contains no fat, but has high calories, so drinking more than one glass of fruit juice won’t help in losing weight.
To rely only on fruit and vegetable juice to lose weight is also a wrong method. By replacing your meal with only juice, you decrease the calorie intake(卡路里摄取量)greatly. It’ll help lose weight, but it can make you lack energy, leading to headaches, stomach disorders, etc.
It’s true that exercise helps to keep healthy weight, but it’ll probably not help you much if you don’t take care of your diet by reducing your calorie intake. If you believe you can exercise every day and eat as much as you want, you’re incorrect. For healthy weight loss, you need to burn more calories than you consume. So, you need to limit the intake of food.
Wrong weight loss methods are dangerous. So if in doubt, you’d better ask a doctor before starting weight loss. Luckily, it’s possible to lose weight with healthy methods. For example, follow healthy food habits, exercise regularly for 20-30 minutes every day, and go on with a healthy lifestyle even after you lose weight. Anyway, as you don’t gain weight overnight, it can’t be lost in a short time either. Give yourself some time. Although healthy methods may take a bit longer to work, they’re surely good for your body.
1. We can know from the first paragraph that .A.fruit juice is low in fat and calories | B.most people don’t lose weight safely |
C.eating high fat foods helps lose weight | D.some quick shaping methods may be harmful |
A.makes you skip meals | B.reduces the calorie intake greatly |
C.can cause a few health problems | D.doesn’t help you to lose weight fast |
A.By reducing mental pressure. | B.By only drinking fruit juice. |
C.By having more rest. | D.By exercising with food control. |
A.We should be patient with losing weight. |
B.We can actually lose weight very easily. |
C.Regular exercise is enough for us to lose weight. |
D.We don’t have to consider our doctor’s advice. |

The few remaining kakapos live on three small islands, where their progress can be monitored through a smart device. Once found in large numbers across New Zealand, the cute bird, which can weigh up to 11 pounds (5 kilograms), is now heading to extinction. While cruel predators (捕食者) such as foxes, cats, and snakes are largely to blame, the kakapo’s strange habits of laying eggs don’t help either. For starters, the parrots, which can live up to 100 years, do not start laying eggs until the age of five.
Scientists have set up individual feeding stations for all the birds to keep track of how much they eat. Given the difficulties to increasing the population, it is not surprising that only 114 adult parrots remain. Though the number is low, it is a great improvement over the 51 kakapos that remained on Earth in 1995. The increase of its population results from the government’s decision to remove the 51 birds to three small predator-free islands off the coast of New Zealand, and the efforts of a team led by Andrew Digby, a kakapo scientist for the New Zealand Department of Conservation.
A four-day-old kakapo chick will receive a health check. Young chicks in nests are examined and weighed every night, to ensure they are healthy.
Once the birds lay eggs, the eggs are carefully moved from the nests and taken to a hatching (孵化) room to hatch. “We tend to be more successful at raising kakapo eggs than the kakapo,” says Digby. “We break less of them. ” Once the eggs hatch, each mother is given only one chick, while the rest of the newborns are hand-fed (人工喂养). This helps ensure they all receive enough food.
1. What makes the kakapo unique in the parrot family?A.Its food. | B.Its way of hatching. |
C.Its feather. | D.Its flightless heavy body. |
A.The way it feeds the young. | B.The environment it needs to live in. |

A.Giving the kakapos a new home without natural enemies. |
B.Setting up individual feeding stations for the kakapos. |
C.Building a fence to keep the predators away. |
D.Driving all the predators nearby away. |
A.To help the mother kakapo keep laying eggs. |
B.To make every chick get enough food to survive. |
C.To protect the mother kakapo from the predators. |
D.To protect the chick from being killed by accident. |

Factors
Academic performance: In class, how about your homework, study, exam, logic, etc.?
Classroom participation: In class, how much did you participate, talking and asking questions? Natural ability: In class, how much do you feel about learning English? Is it easy or difficult? Outside of class: How much do you use English in real life, learning things outside of class? Being abroad: Did you travel to English-speaking countries? How much time did you spend?
Findings
Academic performance helps, up to doubling your vocabulary size. Classroom participation matters too, giving you up to a 50% increase in vocabulary. Outside of class is the biggest difference. Students who do lots of things in English outside of class have more than twice the vocabulary of those who don't. Being abroad brings the average student from around 7,000 to 10,000 words.
Be aware that the results above are suggestive only. More research will tell.

Born in September, 1897, Irene Curie was the first of the Curies’ two daughters. Along with nine other children whose parents were also famous scholars, Irene studied in their own school, and her mother was one of the teachers. At the age of 17 Irene entered the University of Paris to prepare for a degree in mathematics and physics. When World War I began, Irene went to help her mother, who was using X-ray facilities(设备) to help save the lives of wounded soldiers. In 1918, Irene became her mother’s assistant at the Curie Institute. In December 1924, Frederic Joliot joined the Institute, and Irene taught him the techniques required for his work. They soon fell in love and were married in 1926. Their daughter Helene was born in 1927 and their son Pierre five years later.
