I travel a lot in my work, and what I dislike about my job is eating alone. It always makes me feel lonely to see others laughing and talking. So, room service for several nights was a better choice for me.
After having room service three nights at a hotel in Houston, however, I needed to get out of my room. Although the restaurant opened at 6:30, I arrived at 6:25. The waiter at the front desk made a comment (评论) about my “being there really early”. I explained my dislike of eating alone in restaurants. He then seated me at a lovely table and asked me whether I would mind if he sat down with me for a while.
I was glad! He sat and talked with me about his career(职业) goals and the difficulty of being at work on nights, weekends and holidays. He said he hadn’t enough time to be with his family. After 15 minutes, he saw some customers at the front desk and excused himself. I noticed that before he went to the front desk, he stopped in the kitchen for a moment.
Then another waiter came out of the kitchen and had a wonderful chat with me. Before I left that night, some other waiters, even the cook, had come out of the kitchen and sat with me!
When I asked for my bill about one hour later, all the people who had sat down with me came over in a big group to my table, and presented (赠送) me with a red rose. And I cried! What had begun as a lonely night ended as a beautiful experience.

Instead of being the outgoing person I had been, I suddenly became a shy girl. What’s worse, my research wasn’t progressing, leading me to put in more fruitless hours.
Just then, a friend asked what I would do if I had an extra hour every day. Without hesitation, I said I would use it to help others. After that conversation, I began to search online for volunteer opportunities. Luckily, a local organization that drives old people to stores and appointments was looking for volunteers. I thought it might be just what I needed.
I was a bit anxious before my first ride because I hadn’t interacted much with people outside school. However, my nerves quickly calmed when I picked up an old woman on her way to the supermarket. She was bemused to see a young foreign driver and was full of questions about my background. She shared with me how thankful she was to go shopping and get some fresh air. Connections like these and the smiles on my passenger’ faces motivated me to continue driving.
Sharing stories with my passengers was rewarding. Seeing how eager they were to spend time out inspired me to think about how to spend my time. My previously challenging schedule began to feel manageable. As my confidence grew, I began telling my fellow students about the ups and downs in my research and I was surprised to discover that we were in the same boat. As these connections grew, my personality began to reappear.
I’m now close to completing my degree but still facing challenges. My adviser moved to a different university. I’m working to publish my research while also applying for jobs. But these hurdles (难关) now seem easy. I’m really proud of who I have become, and I continue to reflect on how I’m using the most valuable thing in life: my time.

Shelby, the star of “A Dog’s Way Home”, has an unfortunate tale that could top them all. Before her big break, she was living in a landfill, rooting through garbage for her next meal.
Shelby’s big break came in April 2017, when animal-control officer Megan Buhler was driving in Cheatham County, Tennessee. Out on an unrelated call, Buhler spotted and approached what she recalled was a noticeably scared puppy emerging from the dump. “I knelt down and just said, ‘Oh, come here, baby,’” said Buhler. “She was so scared, but she came right up to me, and I was able to put her in my truck.” They headed to the county animal shelter, where the staff began calling the new resident Baby Girl.
Buhler and others didn’t know that 3,200 kilometers away, Hollywood was looking for a dog to play Bella in a film written by Cathryn Michon. The find-a-Bella job went to freelance trainer Teresa Ann Miller. Her mission was to search shelters nationwide for a dog that could play Bella. One day, Miller spotted Baby Girl’s adoption photo. “Honestly, it was a really good picture, and she was flat-out smiling,” Miller said. Then she met Baby Girl, and assessed her on personality and the ability to respond to simple commands. After assessment, she adopted Baby Girl from the shelter, renamed her Shelby and took her to California for training. Miller and Shelby had trained for just over three months before filming began. Then they were together each day on the set.
Most of the film’s reviews have praised Shelby’s performance. Variety made the comments “an amazing dog, perfect performance!”
Shelby has come a long way from the garbage dump. But Buhler said when she saw Shelby recently she just needed only a second to compare the movie star with the dog she found from piles of trash. “She’s exactly the same,” Buhler said.

Until a couple of years ago, I couldn’t have even imagined this happening, but a few months ago my dreams finally became a reality.
I’m more than 7ft (2.15 metres) tall, so travelling is difficult for me. I am the tallest woman in the world, due to a rare genetic condition called Weaver Syndrome (韦弗综合症), which affects only 50 people.
My childhood was not easy. I was home schooled because of my physical condition and from as early as I can remember, I knew I looked different from other people. I felt like a child trapped inside an adult’s body. When I was six, I was already 5ft in tall. As a social norm (标准), people expect men to be bigger and taller than women; this makes things very difficult for tall women, and I find it upsetting.
I often need to adjust things due to my height. Everything has to be altered to suit me, which can be very hard, but there are positives, too. I usually buy clothes from brands specializing in plus-size clothing, then alter them. I’ll find a dress that I like and then get it turned into a top. Bottoms always have to be tailored. It gives me a chance to be creative.
I’ve always been a very ambitious person. In 2014, when I was 17, I received the title for the tallest living teenager. I actually applied for it myself, as I saw the record holder at the time was shorter than me.
In 2021 I was named the tallest living woman, and last year I received the titles for the largest hands, longest fingers and longest back, too. I use these titles as a platform to raise awareness about my condition and also to empower people to be themselves. I hope to inspire and encourage other people with similar conditions to know they’re not alone and that anything is possible for them.

I had been looking forward to bonding with some like-minded people. I wasn’t disappointed. I immediately hit it off with two other students, and we spent the rest of our week focusing on what had brought us together: a love of writing.
Our instructors were two graduate students in the university, and the writing camp was strongly aimed at seeing what we could create from locating ourselves in new places. On the first day of the camp, we each were asked to choose a spot in the town square where we could write about our surroundings. We were told to focus on all of the senses but to prioritize hearing, taste, smell, and touch over sight. Throughout the week, we did similar exercises, finding inspiration in nature and in our own direct experiences.
In the writing camp, I received encouragement from our instructors to publish and to get involved in the writing community. Learning about our instructors’ writing processes with their current projects and about their experiences of publishing helped us catch sight of what our writing lives might look like in the future. In fact, because they encouraged us to start publishing something I started sending my work out. My first short story will go to press early next month.
My experience with the writing workshop was a big success, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. You will make lasting friendships there, be inspired by a green southern town with a literary history, and gain valuable writing experience. I hope this review will be helpful to those who are looking for a great writing workshop.

After going to the hospital, they discovered the cause of the headache: the candles. His mom had no choice but to get rid of the scented (有香味的) items.
However, he knew his mother really loved candles. To lift her spirits, he set up a lab in the family’s kitchen in the fall of 2019 and made a candle using only natural ingredients, such as soy and coconut waxes (蜡) and essential oils. Chemicals in her old candles were causing the headaches. He named his first product Jurassic Orange, which is similar to the fruit in color and smell. Jurassic Orange was a hit with his mom, whose headaches disappeared. But Alejandro wasn’t done experimenting. Within a few months, he had about six scents, including Chunky Sweaters and Cozy Socks, which smells like a fruit drink mixed with a pine forest.
In September 2020, he put his first collection of candles on Etsy, the online marketplace that specializes in handmade goods. He also sold candles at seasonal markets, such as the one in downtown D. C. where the vice president was shopping for holiday gifts last year. He recommended two candles to the vice president. She took some of his advice.
Jesse Benites, general manager of a big shopping mall, said the vice president’s visit “skyrocketed” Alejandro’s fame. A senior manager contacted Alejandro and invited him to rent one of the 12 retail carts at the mall. On September 1,2022, Smell of Love Candles opened on the second level of the shopping center. Alejandro is the mall’s youngest business owner. Inside the mall, Alejandro turned a large room into his production facility, where he and his staff make 600 to 700 candles a week. There were altogether 25 scents on the shelf. He continued to make new scents and wanted to see all his candles in every single household and love and joy come into the houses.

By the time they reached the 20th floor, they were breathing quickly and tired, so they decided to abandon their bags and come back for them the next day. When they struggled to the 40th floor, the younger brother started to complain and both of them began to quarrel all the way to the 60th floor. They then realized that they had only 20 more floors to climb, and decided to stop quarreling and continued climbing in peace. They silently climbed on and arrived home at last. Both of them stood calmly in front of the door. After a short rest, they suddenly realized that the key was in their bags which were left on the 20th floor.
This story is a reflection of our lives. Many of us live under the high expectations of our parents, teachers, and friends. We seldom get to the things we really like and love and we are under so much pressure and stress that by the age of 20, we get tired and decide to lighten the load.
Being free of the pressure and stress, we work enthusiastically and have high hopes. But by the time we’re 40 years old, we start to lose our dreams. We begin to feel unsatisfied and start to complain and criticize. Reaching 60, we realize that we have little left for complaining any more and we began to walk the final stage in peace and calmness. We think that there is nothing left to disappoint us, only to realize that we could not rest in peace because we still have unrealized dream—a dream we gave up 60 years ago.

“You can go,” said the commander, “but I don’t think it will be worth it. Your friend is probably dead and you may throw your own life away.” The commander’s words didn’t matter, and the soldier went anyway.
To one’s surprise, he managed to reach his friend, raised him onto his shoulder, and brought him back to their company’s trench. As the two of them fell in together to the bottom of the trench, the officer checked the wounded soldier, and then looked kindly at his friend. “I told you it wouldn’t be worth it,” he said. “Your friend is dead, and your wound is deadly.” “It was worth it, though, sir.” the soldier said. “How do you mean ‘worth it’?” responded the commander. “Your friend is dead!” “Yes sir.” the soldier answered. “But it was worth it because when I got to him, he was still alive, and I had the satisfaction of hearing him say, ‘Jim, I knew you’d come.’”
