I travel a lot in my work, and what I dislike about my job is eating alone. It always makes me feel lonely to see others laughing and talking. So, room service for several nights was a better choice for me.

After having room service three nights at a hotel in Houston, however, I needed to get out of my room. Although the restaurant opened at 6:30, I arrived at 6:25. The waiter at the front desk made a comment (评论) about my “being there really early”. I explained my dislike of eating alone in restaurants. He then seated me at a lovely table and asked me whether I would mind if he sat down with me for a while.

I was glad! He sat and talked with me about his career(职业) goals and the difficulty of being at work on nights, weekends and holidays. He said he hadn’t enough time to be with his family. After 15 minutes, he saw some customers at the front desk and excused himself. I noticed that before he went to the front desk, he stopped in the kitchen for a moment.

Then another waiter came out of the kitchen and had a wonderful chat with me. Before I left that night, some other waiters, even the cook, had come out of the kitchen and sat with me!

When I asked for my bill about one hour later, all the people who had sat down with me came over in a big group to my table, and presented (赠送) me with a red rose. And I cried! What had begun as a lonely night ended as a beautiful experience.

1. Why did the author ask for room service?
A.Because a lot of money would be saved in this way.
B.Because he didn’t like to eat with other people around.
C.Because he didn’t want to be recognized by the waiters.
D.Because seeing people laughing and talking made him feel lonely.
2. How did the waiter feel when he saw the author come in at 6:25?
A.Surprised.B.Nervous.C.Sad.D.Angry.
3. What can we learn about the waiter from the third paragraph?
A.He was getting tired of his present job.
B.He had never had such a chance to talk about his worries.
C.He found it hard to balance (平衡) his work and his family.
D.He knew how to attract (吸引) more customers to his restaurant.
4. What does the author wants to tell us?
A.Restaurants are sad places for people.
B.People are actually all lonely in their own ways.
C.Restaurants should put the need of customers first.
D.The kindness of strangers can make you less lonely.

【推荐2】I thought I was ready for the challenges of graduate school. However, when I left Nepal to pursue my PhD in a new country, I felt as if I had dropped into an enormous ocean. Instead of being the outgoing person I had been, I suddenly became a shy girl. What’s worse, my research wasn’t progressing, leading me to put in more fruitless hours.

Just then, a friend asked what I would do if I had an extra hour every day. Without hesitation, I said I would use it to help others. After that conversation, I began to search online for volunteer opportunities. Luckily, a local organization that drives old people to stores and appointments was looking for volunteers. I thought it might be just what I needed.

I was a bit anxious before my first ride because I hadn’t interacted much with people outside school. However, my nerves quickly calmed when I picked up an old woman on her way to the supermarket. She was bemused to see a young foreign driver and was full of questions about my background. She shared with me how thankful she was to go shopping and get some fresh air. Connections like these and the smiles on my passenger’ faces motivated me to continue driving.

Sharing stories with my passengers was rewarding. Seeing how eager they were to spend time out inspired me to think about how to spend my time. My previously challenging schedule began to feel manageable. As my confidence grew, I began telling my fellow students about the ups and downs in my research and I was surprised to discover that we were in the same boat. As these connections grew, my personality began to reappear.

I’m now close to completing my degree but still facing challenges. My adviser moved to a different university. I’m working to publish my research while also applying for jobs. But these hurdles (难关) now seem easy. I’m really proud of who I have become, and I continue to reflect on how I’m using the most valuable thing in life: my time.

1. What happened to the author at first when studying in a new country?

2. What did the author volunteer to do?
A.Drive for the disabled.B.Fund a local organization.
C.Serve the old citizens.D.Go shopping with the old.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章介绍了电影A Dog’s Way Home的主人公Shelby从流浪狗变身电影明星的故事。

【推荐3】We’ve all heard the stories of an actor’s struggles before a career breakthrough: living a hard life, working part-time, being a couch potato before getting that major role. Shelby, the star of “A Dog’s Way Home”, has an unfortunate tale that could top them all. Before her big break, she was living in a landfill, rooting through garbage for her next meal.

Shelby’s big break came in April 2017, when animal-control officer Megan Buhler was driving in Cheatham County, Tennessee. Out on an unrelated call, Buhler spotted and approached what she recalled was a noticeably scared puppy emerging from the dump. “I knelt down and just said, ‘Oh, come here, baby,’” said Buhler. “She was so scared, but she came right up to me, and I was able to put her in my truck.” They headed to the county animal shelter, where the staff began calling the new resident Baby Girl.

Buhler and others didn’t know that 3,200 kilometers away, Hollywood was looking for a dog to play Bella in a film written by Cathryn Michon. The find-a-Bella job went to freelance trainer Teresa Ann Miller. Her mission was to search shelters nationwide for a dog that could play Bella. One day, Miller spotted Baby Girl’s adoption photo. “Honestly, it was a really good picture, and she was flat-out smiling,” Miller said. Then she met Baby Girl, and assessed her on personality and the ability to respond to simple commands. After assessment, she adopted Baby Girl from the shelter, renamed her Shelby and took her to California for training. Miller and Shelby had trained for just over three months before filming began. Then they were together each day on the set.

Most of the film’s reviews have praised Shelby’s performance. Variety made the comments “an amazing dog, perfect performance!”

Shelby has come a long way from the garbage dump. But Buhler said when she saw Shelby recently she just needed only a second to compare the movie star with the dog she found from piles of trash. “She’s exactly the same,” Buhler said.

1. Why does the author mention an actor’s struggles before a career breakthrough at the very beginning?

B.To attract reader’s attention by giving dramatic examples.
C.To introduce a dog’s similar but even more striking experiences.
D.To make a sharp contrast between an actor’s struggle and a dog’s struggle.
2. What finally helped Baby Girl get the big role in the film?
A.Her adoption picture.B.Her personality and ability.
C.Her flat-out smiling.D.Her miserable experiences.
3. By saying “She is exactly the same” in the last paragraph, what does Buhler probably mean?
A.The dog looked sad as before.
B.The dog was really excited to live such a happy life.
C.The dog returned to the piles of trash where she found it.
D.The dramatic change of the dog’s life hasn’t changed her inner quality.
4. What do you think may serve as the best title of the passage?
A.The Trainer and Her Star Dog.B.Shelby’s Unfortunate Story.
C.From a Landfill Puppy to a Movie Star.D.The Success of “A Dog’s Way Home”.
