Global Destinations Where Visitors Are Strictly Off-Limits (禁止进入的)

In our times, we like to think that we can travel whenever and wherever we’d like. However, there are destinations around the globe that are simply off-limits. The reasons for these closures vary.

HEART REEF, AUSTRALIA

Located in Queensland’s Whitsundays, Heart Reef is a heart-shaped formation of coral nestled within Hardy Reef which was first discovered in 1975. As it’s a protected area, no one is allowed to swim or dive near Heart Reef. Luckily, it’s visible from above, so visitors can still take in this romantic natural formation by air.

SVALBARD SEED VAULT, NORWAY

While there are many seed vaults (种子库) around the world, perhaps the best known - and largest - is Norway’s Svalbard Seed Vault. It holds seeds from crops around the world as a safety measure against seed loss. As of June 2021, it held over 1 million different crop samples. The vault itself is closed to the public, thought ours bring groups to visit the entrance.

LASCAUX CAVES, FRANCE

The Lascaux Caves are one of the great treasures of pre-historic art. For about I5 years thousands of visitors a day entered the caves to enjoy the Paleolithic paintings, but by 1963 that had come to an end. The caves were closed to the public because the carbon dioxide generated by all the visitors caused green mold to cover the artwork. Since that time, art historians have worked diligently to restore balance in the caves.

SNAKE ISLAND, BRAZIL

As its name suggests, the island is completely filled with poisonous snakes. One to five snakes per square meter make the island their home, including the lethal Golden Lancehead viper. Native to the island, their venom becomes more poisonous as they mature. Due to their presence on the island, the Brazilian government strictly forbids visitors.

【推荐2】Tips on traveling in America

Don’t overbook.

If you only have two or three weeks in the US, don’t try to hit every major attraction in the country. You can’t, and you’ll exhaust yourself. It’s a better idea to plan a trip in one or two regions of the country, based on your personal interests.

Go southern California or Florida if you love theme parks, the East Coast corridor(Boston, Philadelphia, NYC, Washington DC)for history and museums or Hawaii for beaches, volcanoes and surfing. If you love the outdoors, try the national and state parks in Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, or Oregon.

Don’t settle for bad food.

There is amazing food in the US; you just have to seek it out. Please don’t eat fast food for your entire visit and then complain that the food was bad!

Most major cities, states and regions have their own food specialties, such as lobster in Maine, New York style pizza in NYC, deep-dish pizza in Chicago or Tex-Mex in Texas and the southwest. You can also try barbecue in Memphis, or grilled salmon in the Pacific Northwest.

Don’t count on speaking any language besides English.

Most Americans only speak English and will expect you to do the same. If you go to a doctor or hospital, they can call an interpreter for you, but otherwise you need to speak English fluently to get around. You could probably manage with just Spanish if you are visiting the southwest, but keep in mind that it will be a Mexican/Latin American dialect. It’s best to brush up on your English skills before your visit.

1. For tourists who enjoy visiting national parks, which states are they advised to go to?
A.Florida.B.Colorado.
C.Hawaii.D.Boston.
2. If you are traveling in Texas, what food might be recommended?
A.Grilled salmon.B.Peach pie.
C.Barbecue.D.Tex-Mex.
3. Where does the text most probably come from?
A.A novel.B.A textbook.
C.An ad.D.A travel brochure.

【推荐3】Cedar Creek Treehouse

Cedar Creek Treehouse is very high. About 15m above ground, it is wrapped around the trunk of an enormous 200-year-old red cedar tree. The treehouse is the brainchild of Bill Compher, who has created this special building at the border between Mount Rainier National Park and the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in Washington.

Access is along a 25m-long suspension bridge, then up a five-story stairway whose fourth floor is a glass observation area, where you can swing in a hammock (吊床) and enjoy the mountain views. On the fifth floor, the treehouse is divided into two levels: from the entrance there’s a surprisingly spacious living room, kitchen, bathroom and sunroom, while upstairs there are two double beds and skylights so you can take in the night sky.

But if this isn’t enough of a bird’s-eye-view, you can climb up a separate 30m stairway, walk across another suspension bridge to a glass observatory and admire the 360-degree views of the forest. But this is not for everyone. “Climbing an 85-foot staircase, walking a 45-foot-long suspension bridge to a treehouse observatory 100 feet in the sky... that takes a special kind of person.” wrote Compher on his website.

Need to know: Kids under 7 are not allowed inside the treehouse. Rates are $250 for two people per night, and $25 for each additional guest.

1. What can a guest do on the fifth floor?
A.Cook some food.B.Rest in a hammock.
C.Stay in a glass observatory.D.Walk on a suspension bridge.
2. How much is it for a couple with their 9-year-old twins to stay overnight at Cedar Creek?
A.$275.B.$300.C.$500.D.$550.
3. This passage is probably a(n) ________.
A.advertisementB.guidebookC.instructionD.diary
