One day, Reuben, a 12-year-old boy, saw something in a shop window that set his heart racing. The price—five dollars—was beyond his means, but he went in the shop anyway.

Poorly dressed, he went up and told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “I don't have the money right now. Will you please hold it for me for some time?”

“I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. “Folks around here don't usually have money to spend on such things. It should keep for a while.”

Reuben decided to raise the five dollars by himself. Walking along a side street, he had an idea. People built their own houses in his town, using nails purchased in Hessian sacks (粗麻袋)from a local factory. The sacks were sometimes thrown away. Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.

Every day after school, Reuben went around the town, collecting nail sacks. The school closed for the summer, and he was still wandering in the town, searching for his treasures. Often he was tired and hungry, but the thought of the object in the shop window kept him going. Sometimes his mother Dora would ask: “Reuben, where were you? We were waiting for you to have dinner.”

“Playing, Mum. Sorry.”

Dora would look at him in his face and shake her head. Boys!

One day in spring, he counted his coins and found he needed twenty cents more. He had to find four sacks and sell them before the day ended. Late in the afternoon, just before the buyer was about to close up, Reuben arrived and sold the four sacks. With the coins in his hand, he murmured a thank you and ran away.

School was over, the day was fading and it started to drizzle (毛毛雨). I stood at the school gate, with a loaded backpack on my shoulders. It was Friday again: a weekend of joy with unlimited sleeping hours and dinner courses specially made to my taste. A weekend at home. I waved goodbye to my friends as they jumped into their fathers’ warm and comfortable cars. Curiously, this gave rise to a disturbing feeling in me. It was not exactly what they called jealousy (嫉妒), but something like dismay (沮丧). I knew all I could expect was an old bike Mom would ride along on, with the badly-oiled chain creaking (嘎吱作响) against the wheel to announce her arrival.

Every Friday when Mom came to pick me up for the weekend, it was a moment full of great expectation and great unease. I always felt my face burning as we rode our way in and out of the numerous cars and saw my friends’ faces sticking out of the car windows. It was like stepping into a ballroom with beautifully dressed ladies and finding yourself in a smelly T-shirt.

To tell you the truth, Mom is quite a headache occasionally. She looks like a homely middle-aged housewife. Being a skilled person of DIY, she knits (编织) most of my sweaters, chiefly in old styles. Whenever caught by some curious classmates asking what brand my sweaters are, I’d force a smile and reply in a half-joking manner: homemade. She simply doesn’t seem to understand what’s in fashion; Chanel or Banana Republic doesn’t mean anything to her.

I couldn’t remember when I started to find her such an embarrassment. As a little boy, I relied on her so much. She had been working at home, cooking in the kitchen, knitting by the lamp, or riding across town to buy me a book I badly needed. It had always been fun riding with her. I had enjoyed watching our shadows growing longer and shorter in an alternate fashion by the light of the streetlamps along the road. Just now there seemed to be something standing between us, something that made her so strange to me and me to her.

【推荐2】阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
Dear Ari,

As you sleep in my arms, I'm amazed at how light you feel. I stare at your tiny body, so fragile that a sudden wind could lift you up into the air. I love this feeling of protecting you and dreaming of all I have in store for you.

I intend to bring you up to be brave and successful in an often difficult society. That's why your mommy and I have named you Ari, which means "lion". It's our hope that you will grow strong and eagerly grasp every opportunity to do well for yourself and others.

Before you came into the world, we had spent months imagining what you'd be like. Would you be a boy or a girl? Would you look like Mommy, Daddy or your elder brothers? Anyway, we would find out soon.

Finally your mother's labor came. And several hours later, we met the first time. I held you high up in the air. I then was able to cut your umbilical cord (脐带) and put you in your mother's arms. She still had enough energy to radiate the love while she pressed you to her face.

And here we are tonight. As I hold you close, you sleep so peacefully. I press my ear to your chest and hear your strength. I am listening to the first beats of a lion's heart. Welcome to the world, Ari.

Love,

Daddy

【推荐3】阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

In our kitchen, there was a wooden table and three chairs - one for Pa, one for Ma, and one for me. I tried not to look at Pa’s empty place. Pa had gone to the city to look for work. He had been gone for a long time.

Every night, lying awake in bed, I waited for the train to stop, waited for the sound of his work boots dropping on the step, and waited for his voice calling, “I’m home!”

Every night, as I lay there, I stared at the window and the curtains Ma made from empty flour sacks (面粉袋). Sometimes the train stopped - for someone else’s Pa coming home. Not mine, not yet.

Every night, Ma came to kiss me good-night - after the train had gone by. She had been listening, too. “Go to sleep. Your Pa’ll be home soon. Maybe for Thanksgiving.”

How could I be thankful without my Pa?

I went to sleep with the sound of train wheels in my head, whispering, “Maybe tomorrow, maybe tomorrow.”

One morning, the smell of coffee woke me. I ran into the kitchen. There he was! Pa lifted me onto his shoulders. “How’s my boy? You’ve gotten so big that I can barely lift you up anymore.”

He put me down, and I stared at the two sacks on the table. One said FLOUR. I tried reading the other: S-U-G-A-R. Pa whistled admiringly and winked (眨眼) at me. Ma didn’t say no when Pa sprinkled (撒) a bit of that precious white sugar on my bread.

Ma said, “I’m going to bake a pie for your Pa’s homecoming dinner. Go downstairs, Jimmy, and bring me that jar of apples.” She smiled at me with a “mind now” look.

There was no need. I knew how to be careful. It was the last jar - the one we had been saving and saving to welcome Pa home. “When Pa comes home, there’ll be apple pie.” I could hardly remember what pies tasted like.
